1,301 Florescent Bulbs ....

This field has 1,301 florescent bulbs planted in it, and they're all glowing. They aren't plugged into anything, however; they're powered solely from the magnetic fields produced by the power lines above. It's all a large art project by Richard Box, and if you're really interested in it you can order a DVD of the whole thing from him. If you're cheaper and less interested, just peruse our gallery for the cool shots.

Linky.

Now this is just plain cool, but just totally freaks me out at the same time.

I used to know a lot of fans of CB radio. A favorite trick to show off was lighting up a flourescent bulb held next to the antenna. Real wattage could light up an incandescent, always a crowd pleaser. Now I know why some of them had kids with birth defects. Yes, really.

Let no one yield, we're on the field where deeds eclipse the sun; where the brave are told on a thread of gold, the tapestry is spun. As they speak of dreams, their armor gleams, this calm before the storm... Where all can see their destiny, the bishop takes the pawn.

Finally, someone found a way to make both Michael Faraday and Al Gore happy at the same time! 3.gif

Neat.  The last time I saw something like that was in the environs of a Tesla coil as an Engineering Society demo when I was at college (1959).  So this is nothiing very startline.

However, in these green days, is a field like this some form of field pollution?  It seems all that power in the magnetic field is wasted.  What would be the effect on the power grid if this field could be captured to so something useful?  Would it mess up the power transmission?
