As far as my knowledge tells me, the answers to your questions are no and yes, but they are few in number and can only be found in the remote regions of East Europe.3.gif

Netscape still exists; it's installed on my machine by default. People still use AOL, too. Also, AOL has already sort of disowned Netscape before: Firefox exists because AOL basically dumped the Netscape people, and they decided to make their own browser.

I use Netscape as my backup browser, it works really well, and I'm suprized they pulled the plug on it.

Edit: you can still download Netscape 9. I think it is a variant of Firefox.

An Opera. And Safari. And Konqerour. And... Anyway, it's a bad idea to rely on just a few of them. Like ST, which forces me to use HTML for line breaks instead of just hitting [RETURN] a few times.

EDIT: Just saw that they're cutting the production, not the support for it. Well, there are plenty of browsers out there anyway.

There are, in fact, people out there who still use AOL, shocking as it may seem. Though, if you're an AOL user, it's generally good practice never to mention it, since if people find out, they're going to laugh at you. So far as geek culture is concerned (and geek culture is the culture of the internet, by nature), AOL is like Disco- it was cool in its day, but now anyone that still likes it is strange.

Generally, there are five big "don'ts" for the internet if you don't want to get made fun of:

-don't let people know if you use AOL or IE.

-don't let people know if you use Dialup.

-don't host your website on GeoCities or Freewebs and don't use a template, get your own domain and design it yourself.

-don't let people know if use a Mac.

-don't abuse chatspeak or leetspeak, and don't neglect punctuation, capitalization, or spelling.

Other than that, what will or won't cause people to have fun at your expense varies too much from place to place to draw any general trends from.

Whats wrong with Internet Explorer?

I use IE, feel theres no reason to have another web browser if you have one thats included with the OS.

I'd say that's largely because if someone does make fun, the post usually gets edited or deleted. People don't do it not because they don't want to, but rather because it's against the rules. I know I'm in that category...

There's a looooong list of things that are wrong with Internet Explorer. What's ironic here is that the fact that it's included with the OS is one of them- that's a major security hole.

In other words, the reason you're giving as a reason to use IE is actually a great reason not to use IE.

The trouble is that it's counterintuitive that the browser your computer comes with is the last one you should use. After all, if that were the case, why would your computer come with it? The answer, is, of course, that IE is Microsoft's browser- so as long as you're buying a computer with Windows, that's the browser it's going to come with.

A lot of people give the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" argument- the trouble is that it is "broke", but your average Joe simply doesn't know any better and doesn't know enough about computers to really understand why it's "broke".

Well, let's see here, according to my "Stay Secure 1.77" widget for Opera, IE has 7 security holes, Firefox has 5, Opera has none, Safari has 3, and Konqerour has 2.

Edit: there's also Flock and SeaMonkey, and Netscape still works fine.

I've seen the Acid test before, but to a certain extent, am unsure what it is supposed to prove.  I ran the test in both FF2 and IE6 (I recently reinstalled the OS and haven't finished dealing with the crap the manufacturer insists on foisting on its customers) and both of them butchered the rendering job.  I'll grant that FF2 was closer to the proper rendering, but it was still way off of what it should have done.  On a different note, in reading reviews of the FF3 beta (and my own playing with it before I reinstalled my computer's OS),  FF3 is suffering from some rather embarrassing, and potentially massive, complications.

The basic problem with IE is its dependence of the Microsoft's Visual Studio.  This essentially marries it to Windows.

If AOL went away, would anyone miss it?  I doubt it, as there are lots of ISPs around, and that is basically all you need.  In fact, if you are wifi, a subscription to one of those does the trick as long as you can stay covered.

IE has too many sweet deals, and websites like EA.com are dependent on their ActiveX technology, which is a lock-in.  From a system administration point of view, this sucks.

Interesting that an Opera widget will find 0 holes in Opera. 38.gif

That didn't come from Opera Software, all widgets are 3rd party, the location where it gets its data from is here:

Edit: about the acid test, wiki says that only Opera 9, Safari 2.0.3 (or later) or Konqueror 3.5 (or later) render it properly.

First, let's not be ridiculing people for the OS they use.  Second, people still do use AOL and Netscape.  Exactly how can AOL UK release a report saying that 70% of its users don't know the meaning of the word "spam" if they don't have users in the first place? 42.gif
