Reservist has been around since April 2, 2010 - same as all the other new ranks from the overhaul. It does, however, have a rather narrow window of appearance (~910-940 posts), so it's understandable if you haven't noticed it before.

No, it is based on post count, not time since register.

People who have been registered since 2003 could potentially still have "stranger" (Duke can correct me on that one) or some other "freshmen" equivalent. Also, people like larks who haven't even been around for a year can be ST fanatics!

"Stranger" is still an active rank, it just got its range contracted: anyone with exactly 1 post who made said post on or after March 5, 2006 will have it (if they made their post before that date, they will be "Junior Member", as will anyone else who has not posted since then).

You are correct, though, in your assesment that retired ranks can still be found. Since your rank only updates when you make a post, anyone who has not posted since before the ranks were changed will still have their old rank.

AND I just realised today, that the ranks "Freshman", "Sophomore", "Junior" and "Senior" refers to your status the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year on high school in USA. At least I learn SOMETHING during my english lessons...

Yes, although not exclusively. The four years of high school are sometimes known simply as 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades.

Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior can also refer to the four years of college.

That should appear for 42 posts, and will only appear on that number (although I think I read there was a bug in it).  It's a cultural reference to "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".
