St. Andrew's Day

Today, November 30th, is St. Andrew's Day! If you are Scottish, Russian, Greek, Romanian, Prussian, live in Amalfi in Italy, live in Luqa in Malta, an Army Ranger, a mariner, a fisherman or fishmonger, a rope maker or a singer and performer, then you probably know what I'm talking about. St. Andrew is the patron saint of all of these things!

In Scotland, we don't particularly make a big deal out of it, not as much as some countries make of theirs (...Ireland...), but yesterday at the school canteen they served Haggis, Neeps and Tatties (Sheep's stomach, turnips and potatoes, traditional Scotch meal). Some people will wear their kilts today probably, and there might even by a parade or march in one or two towns.

How do you celebrate your patron saint's day?

OMG Muzz....eeeeeewwwwwwwwww, did you eat it all up......so bet you did LOL 4.gif

Well being in Northern Ireland yes we do celebrate, not as much as Ireland (Republic) but we do have the day off, parades in the cities and town esp Downpatrick where the saint is buried. The flag of St. Patrick is also flown above public buildings and we drink green beer, I don't , can't stand beer. But we would go out for the night as well.

Saint David's day usually results with school children dressing up in traditional dress for school and eisteddfod's (variety performances). There's a large parade in the Welsh Capital yearly and men usually attach a daffodil or leek to their coat (as they are national symbols of Wales). It's all very low key and quite dignified. 4.gif

Here in England the patron saint is Saint George, his day being on April 23. Even though his cross is the flag of England, St George's Day remains as a low-key affair as it is not a public holiday and isn't celebrated in most places.

I think the only major public celebration in Canada is in Quebec on June 21st, which is le Fete de St. Jean Baptiste (John the Baptist day).  It stirs old wounds and is a cause for celebration.

Eh, America is most a protestant country, we don't really have a specific patron saint day...

but if I had to pick a favorite feast day I'd say St. Francis day. 3.gif

Honestly though man, Haggis is really not that bad... I don't care what the hell its made from as along as it tastes good. I totally forgot about St. Andrew's anyway... I don't really make a big deal out of it... Burns Night is better.

Great! I'll take two...

Let no one yield, we're on the field where deeds eclipse the sun; where the brave are told on a thread of gold, the tapestry is spun. As they speak of dreams, their armor gleams, this calm before the storm... Where all can see their destiny, the bishop takes the pawn.

St. George was Turkish... lolololol (ironicly all the BNP supporters and whatnot seem to think he is English).

Didnt the Former Pope remove a couple Patron Saints?

I seem to recall St Christopher ( of The St Christopher medal fame) was removed.

yes, St. Christopher lost his sainthood back when I was a kid.

As far as celebrations for patron saints, the only one I've seen in St. Patrick's Day and I'm not sure that counts.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

I'm an atheist. I don't have patron saints.31.gif

The thing I've never really understood is how what saint gets what day is decided. It can't be their birthdays, since the birthdays of older ones are often not known, and you get overlaps that way.

Besides, after 366 saints you run out of days, so not everyone can have their day. And it's practically 364 since no one wants to short straw someone into having February 29th, and December 25th is reserved for the man himself. You'd probably want to knock off the epiphany and other such things, too.
