WE ARE CANADIANS

At what point do we stop being Canadians?

Bruce Allan is on the 2010 Olympic Committee and new Canadians (specifically Hindi's/ Indian's) want him fired for his recent comments outlined below;

"Subject: Our National Anthem

I am sorry, but after hearing they want to sing the National Anthem in Hindi - enough is enough. Nowhere or at no other time in our nation's history, did they sing it in Italian, Japanese, Polish, Irish (Celtic), German, Portuguese, Greek, or any other language because of immigration. It was written in English, adapted into co-founding French, and should be sung word for word the way it was written.”

[Ed. Note.] Actually I think Calixa Lavalee was Quebecois, and the original is in French. The English words are much weaker than the French. [/Ed. Note]

The news broadcasts even gave the Hindi version translation which was not even close to our National Anthem.

I am not sorry if this offends anyone, this is MY COUNTRY - IF IT IS YOUR COUNTRY SPEAK UP ---- please pass this along.

I am not against immigration -- just come through like everyone else. Get a sponsor; have a place to lay your head; have a job; pay your taxes, live by the rules AND LEARN THE LANGUAGE as all other immigrants have in the past -- and LONG LIVE CANADA!"

It's time we all get behind Bruce Allen, and scrap this Political Correctness nonsense . His comments were anything but racist, but there are far too many overly sensitive 'New Canadians' that are trying to change everything we hold dear.

ARE WE PART OF THE PROBLEM??? Think about this: If you don't want to forward this for fear of offending someone, will we still be the Country of Choice and still be CANADA if we continue to make the changes forced on us by the people from other countries who have come to live in CANADA because it is the Country of Choice?

Think about it!

IMMIGRANTS, NOT CANADIAN'S, MUST ADAPT.

Beebs recently gave me a gold star for knowing the words to the Canadian National Anthem.  Seems to me, if I can learn it, people who live there can.  Not that it's my call.

This reminds me of the people who want to sing the "Star Spangled Banner" in Spanish.  Most people agreed that the song was written in English and should stay that way.

btw, what are the French words to "O Canada"?   I can read French on a very elementary level so maybe I could understand them and see what the difference is.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

Much ado about nothing I think. I don't understand why anyone would care in what language any national anthem was sung in. But they should at least get the translation right.

English

O Canada!

Our home and native land!

True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,

The True North strong and free!

From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

French

Ô Canada!

Terre de nos aïeux,

Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!

Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,

Il sait porter la croix!

Ton histoire est une épopée des plus brillants exploits.

Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,

Protégera nos foyers et nos droits;

Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

English translation of French

O Canada!

Land of our forefathers

Thy brow is wreathed with a glorious garland of flowers.

As in thy arm ready to wield the sword,

So also is it ready to carry the cross.

Thy history is an epic of the most brilliant exploits.

Thy valour steeped in faith

Will protect our homes and our rights

Will protect our homes and our rights.

From Wikipedia:

" "O Canada" is the national anthem of Canada. Calixa Lavallée composed the music in 1880 as a patriotic song for that year's St. Jean-Baptiste Day ceremony. The first lyrics that were composed for the song were written in French by Sir Adolphe Basile Routhier in 1880 for the same ceremony. An English translation did not appear until 1906, and it was two more years until Robert Stanley Weir penned the English lyrics, which are not a translation of the French. Weir's words were altered in 1914 and again in 1980 to their present form, although the French lyrics remain unaltered. The choice of "O Canada" for the national anthem did not occur until 1980, when it was signed into law during the Canada Day celebrations that year. It was modified, along with the royal anthem of Canada, ''God Save the Queen'', to be part of the Vice Regal Salute."

I personally find this stupid. English and French are the official languages of Canada. Not Hindi.

You chirped it birdie.  And they want to fire a member of the VANOC for telling them that we don't sing out anthem in anything other than one of the official languages.  We don't even sing it in Inuktatut, which is definitely more likely.

Was that just in Spanish or did they want guitar accompaniment too?  Maybe it could be in Hindi with Sitars?  I think Francis Scott Key would turn over in his grave.

Somewhere, I have a mug with the original words of the Maple Leaf Forever on it.  Not politically correct these days ...

Okay, that's just silly. If the olympic committee caved and they sang the anthem in Hindi, then they'd have to sing the national anthem in every language. And that would take a hundred years... Better to just stick to the two official languages.

I hereby demand that they sing the anthem with a Kentucky accent!

Well this sounds a lot like the situation in the U.S.

But in French Class, we say the Pledge of Allegiance in French, and the Spanish classes in Spanish, but nobody messes with the national anthem. I presume the situation is the same in Canada?

We don't have a usually-recited pledge of allegiance.  That is reserved for Citizenship courts and other special occasions.

We don't need to be reminded all the time of our obligations to our country.  Just attack us or an ally, and you'll find out.
