Yesterday's election result was a "celebration of democracy," according to National Party leader Walter Tucker. His party and the Liberal Democrats have this morning formally announced a coalition agreement between the two parties that will give them a slim 8 seat majority in the 294 seat Legislative Assembly.

Progressive Party4.44%211217.14%
Unity Party37.10%2948328.23%
Independents1.80%15410.34%

This morning, Tucker quickly jumped into his new role as Premier and appeared confident as he addressed the media. "We will be using the mandate given to us by the people of Lyresia to lay the foundations of a fair and just society that will bring economic prosperity for generations to come."

At the same time, Unity Party leader Leslie Knight was philosophical about her party's election loss. "All our candidates and party members have been working tirelessly during the campaign. The Unity Party will begin immediately to work hard in earning the trust of the community."

As pre-election polling indicated that Unity would not have the numbers come election day to form government in their own right, senior Unity Party officials turned towards the other minor parties in hope of being able to form a coalition government.

In the weeks before the election, any hope of a Unity-Greens-Progressive coalition were dashed when Progressive Party leader Louis Davis publicly stated that his party would not be part of any coalition government that involved the Greens. Tensions between the two minor parties are believed to be over which party leader would hold role of Deputy Premier.

Today Knight was rather elusive as to whether or not she would be working closely with Davis and Greens leader Sarah Daniels in order to form a coalition and beat the newly formed government at the next election.

"It's too early to speculate about what might happen at the next election. We're looking forward to working with all parties within the Legislative Assembly, and as Leader of the Opposition it is my job to ensure the government is held to account and delivers the services required to build a safe and prosperous community."

When members of the Legislative Assembly meet in a weeks time, their first job will be to elect both the Speaker and Governor. The Speaker's role is to maintain orderly conduct within the chamber and to ensure correct parliamentary procedures are followed, whereas the Governor will be signing into law any legislation passed by the Legislative Assembly.

It is believed that the Nationals promised the Liberal Democrats the Speaker position in exchange for their commitment to form a coalition should both parties have the numbers to form government. Disappointing says the opposition, who in turn are are expected to nominate the only independent member, Melissa Henry, for the position.

"Being an independent member will ensure that they remain above party politics and conduct themselves in a fair manner," says Leslie Knight.

Liberal Democrats leader and Deputy Premier Tony Nelson was rather quiet on the issue when pressed for a comment. "All members will have the opportunity to nominate themselves as speaker, and it will be up to the Legislative Assembly to make the final decision."

The election of Governor is expected to be rather tense process, which, unlike the 50% majority vote required for the Speak
