    Water.jpg

Yeah...Kinda wierd...But anyways, they're grown in tempered glass boxes, which allows them to grow into the Square shapeWater2.jpg

The reason behind doing all this, was simply to make the fruit fit better in the fridge. Bu

Having lived in Japan for the past two years, I can tell you for certain that these watermelons do exist. These melons fall into the category of "gift food". The Japanese love giving gifts and it is customary to give a gift when you visit someone's home for dinner or something along those lines. Fruits make very good gifts in Japan because pretty much everyone likes them and they can be wrapped in fancy and unique ways to show that you were thoughtful enough to bring a well-wrapped gift. In Japan, the gift is not as important as its presentation.

The downside to the above watermelons and other gift fruit is their price. Those watermelons are easily over $100USD. I have seen small oranges that are supposed to be the best of the best sell for almost $10,000USD for a case of them. Gift fruit is not cheap. But it is quite cute.

Time stamps.  You posted after the clock rolled over on the server.  Enjoy it, because you'll be one of the only people, and the only person to do it at the beginning of the thread, this year. 3.gif

Surely it's not that difficult to grow any square fruit yourself? Next time my peppers start growing I think I'll put them in a box so they turn our cube-tastic! Or maybe another shape... suggestions welcome!

VT, ya I figured that out during chat a little later.

And yes, I'm sure that these watermelons are more expensive. But still, they must be very convenient. hey don't roll around in the fridge and they look easy to cut up. Japanese people come up with some of the cleverest things...

why is fruit so expensive in Japan? This wouldnt be the first time I've read about really expensive melons, last time I read an article about 200 dollar cantaloupes

Anyways, why didn't I think of that, what a crazy cool idea.
