Transportation

Ok, seems SC4 and SC4:RH are two different critters when it comes to Sims, how they get around.. and mass transportation and how it's used, and the order it's used.

I'm encountering problems when the distance gap between Sims and jobs becomes too great it seems. I have two neighboring cities and when I build close to the borders things seem ok, but as things build outward I start encountering problems. I tried to remedy this with buses and or trains but they get very little use if any. These were $ Sims, for the most part. They just complained of no jobs, and commute was too long.

I thought $ Sims liked using mass transit.. so I've been trying buses, trains.. but I still get the dreaded no job. Just what ARE the rules when it comes to Sims, transportation and mass transit?

Thanks.

Depending on the size of your city, you might not have enough connections. You need a LOT of connections.

If nothing does the trick, get the Network Addon Mod (NAM) wich makes the transport a lot more realistic and easier to manage.

    I have NAM (2007 Mac).

As far as connections go I only had the avenue connection. There are two cities (A and B), both on large maps. The residential and commerce were near the center of the map for City A with an avenue running to the border connecting City B. Near the center of the map for City B is a lot of industrial zones with the avenue connection. You mean to tell me to get those Sims to travel the distance I need more connections? Makes no sense but... I give it a try.

Double check you have enough jobs in your city/surrounding cities, that might be the cause of the problem. Also SC4 seems to prefer cars to any other form of transport.

There were plenty of jobs waiting for the Sims in the neighboring city. Equal to roughly 4 to 5 times the number of Sims. The Sims were $, and the jobs were dirty industry. And cars was their first best option from the start, using an avenue.

Note: Thinking poor Sims prefer to use mass transit, I did try using buses, then rail, then a combo of both along with parking garages. But they didn't appear to like this either.

How many Sims are we talking about here? If you want more than a few thousand Sims to commute for work, then a single Avenue is not nearly enough capacity--Avenues only carry something like 2500 Sims per hour in each direction.

You need to force your sims on transportation systems. In a medium size tile I will place a lot of R sims. They need to go north and west to get to work. Place your subway, bus and train and monarial stations facing those directions. No road or avenues for these people to go north and west. Now I will place roads going east and south so it looks like they are not locked in. Its important to remember to keep alternate transportion right in the way. If two more towers build, add 5000 more sims just add more subway and bus stations right at there front door. I spend every extra dollar on alternate transportation because if the people are moving then your city wants to grow.

Also start many cities next to each other, they feed off each other. And also if you have 6or 8 or more cities all starting up it keeps you busy developing all of them and cuts out the boredom factor of just developing a few cities.

And yes the Nam is A blessing, but I did develop the Berlin region up to over 10 million people before I started using custom content and the Nam. I wouldn't want to do it again thu!
