Transportation help please!

Hello!

I have a few questions about Sims traveling across the region.

I currently have two cities, that co-depend on each other, one pure industry, the other commercial and residential mix.

My questions are:

1.  Though the ferry routes are shown on the region map, what prerequisites are actually needed for Sims to travel via Ferry to reach (or get close) to their destination?

2. Can I use subways for industrial use (travel underground, place stations where necessary)?

3. Does a sea port only exist to increase industry cap, or does it have a purpose for commercial use as well?  (Do I need a matching port in my residential/commercial to get full use out of my industrial port?)

4. What is the benefit of a one-way street over an avenue (or vice versa?)

5. Is there any transportation side-effects to building a purely square-based city?

Thank you for reading!

Question 1, 2 and 3 I don't know, but I'll try on 4 and 5:

4. One way streets use less space..? And since sims can only go one way you can pretty much specify how they should drive for optimal use of the Highways/Avenues

5. well the fastest route for your sims is probably in a straight line, so the areas in the centre will have very busy roads whereas the outer borders are almost empty. Plus: there are a lot of road junctions so traffic won't be smooth 2.gif

EDIT: about the port:

you don't need mathing ports do you? It's just an extra exit of the city, like railroads of roads at the borders, the goods don't really go anywhere

You need matching ferry's at each end of the route.  The placement should be close to good transits, and/or other transit stations.  Ferry's are best for travel between cities, as there is no time penalty after loading.

You can use subways for any travel, between cities, or zones.

The Seaport carries freight for the industrial, just as the airport does for commercial.  I guess that helps with the employment level.  The seaport does not connect cities in any way, it just ships the freight to where it only knows.

Oneway roads traffic limits are higher than roads, but lower than one of the lanes of an avenue.  Oneway default is 2,000, and one lane of an avenue is 2,500.

The game does not compute anything on a diagonal.  It computes on the up, and across, of a diagonal.

4. One way roads with elevated rail / subway in between works great and is easy to work with. Use elevated rail over pedestrian mall puzzle piece for eye candy (more work laying out tho).

And here is my nickel's worth

  1. Ferries are about the fastest transportation there is.  However, the route must be shorter than the complementary road route.  If you use passenger only ferries you need parking garages at the R end and mass transit at the work end.
  2. Yes, but remember Sims will only walk about 8 grids total getting to work.
  3. A sea port is an industrial goods export point.  Industrial goods go into the ol' bit bucket in the sky (alas).
  4. Well, they take less space, and you can have opposite going ones with anything you like in between, like Elevated Rail or GLR.  An avenue is two one-way roads in lock step.
  5. Yes.  You'll get lots of congestion in the center.  I usually build cities in pods with limited access to each.  Around transportation nexuses is good.
