Reconcile Edges

Is this something that I have to do or can I ignore it?   Also, I am not sure what the purse  for it is.  I am assuming that it's got something to do with my neighbor and the connections. 

 

I know that i need to be connected by road/electric/pipes, so If i do that manually do I have to still  reconcile.

It is used when you do terraforming to a city. You don't want to leave the city and drop a couple of hundred feet, or run into a rock cliff.

You don't want to use it when you have developed area's close to the cities edge, because it will destroy the developments.

I turn off the auto reconcile option.

A good way for me is to not develope anything at the edge tiles so it won't change the terrain much.
