Alright, so I have gmax downloaded, I have the BAT downloaded, and Im starting to make buildings. I realize that, I dont have to make every small detail, I can use some prop sets, and of course give the prop creators credit for that. My question is, what the heck do you do with the prop files!?

Prop files can not be opened in Gmax.  They can only be used in the lot editor.  In order to be able to use the props, they just need to be in your plugins folder, and then you will be able to use them in the lot editor.  If you are uploading your lot to the STEX, then you should not include the prop files with your download, but you should provide a link to where the author uploaded them.

For things you can use in Gmax, there is a STEX category for 3ds files.  You can go to file>merge to get them into a scene.  But .gmax files will never be required for anything to work in the game properly.  The .SC4Model file contains all of the visual information in the building.

Does that clarify?

This thread seems like a good jump off for a similar question. How do i make props? you mentioned it's not done in gmax and the loteditor seems like it's just for positioning. What do i use to make say my own billboard, and then how do i turn it into a usable plugin file?

you make props in gmax - then export them to a sc4model - then use the plugin manager and make them into props by dragging the file down to the prop section (you'll see what I mean when you open the plugin manager)

the plugin manager will make a piece of informaqtion that makes the Lot Editor realize your model is a prop called a Desc file. To make the prop work all you need is the model which you exported from Gmax and the Desc file.

does that make sense?
