Exprimenting with Linux

Hi folks,

Well, I am seeking a better platform that Vista for our game, and am slowly getting up to speed on Linux (Ubuntu Feisty Fawn).

I put up the firewall today (firestarter), and found that I have no problems downloading from here.  I am also having no problems with the Internet.  There seems to be a serious lack of viruses in this environment, but then this O/S knows itself inside out, and checks if any system files are attacked.  Really good, unobtrusive security.

Even better.  The linux guruzim tell me that linux doesn't need a firewall as its IP's are already mapped to stop any nonsense.  I have quit using firestarter.

Experimenting with wine, the Windows XP interface layer (adds to the HAL).  Managed to install SC4+RH and apply both updates to get to 1.1.640.0.  However, something still not quite right.  It crashes to the desktop even before it displays the bridge crash screen.  Grrrr.

Interesting that the installer runs just fine under wine control, and I get the folder for the programs, but the program crashes.  It is a big job because I install SC4+RH.  (My version of RH only has one disk, so I assume that's the general case.)

    More to do.

I have also figured out virtual disks in linux.  You create an iso copy of the disk (linux has a tool), then create a mount point for it, and just mount it.  Voila, no more disk in the drive.  Now, if I can just get this to run....

I tried running it on Ubuntu with Wine and Cedega. Wine simply did not work; Cedega ran the program (a not insignificant feat) but it could not support any mods other than new lots--it also could not support a widescreen monitor.

I think the best choice is to use XP if there are drivers for your hardware--it's what SC4 was designed to run on.

I tend to agree, but I am a stubborn cuss.  My machine is dual booted, but it takes XP nearly five minutes to get up, where as Linux takes 90 seconds unless it has to run an FSCK.
