Neil Diamond - Solitary Man

I have no idea why I like this song so much, but since I woke up with the earbug of it this morning, I thought it would be a nice one to mention.

Melinda was mine

'Til the time that I found her

Holdin' Jim

And lovin' him

Then Sue came along

Loved me strong, that's what I thought

Me and Sue

That died, too

Don't know that I will

But until I can find me

A girl who'll stay

And won't play games behind me

Then I'll be what I am

A solitary man

Solitary man

I've had it to here

Bein' where love's a small word

Part-time thing

Paper ring

I know it's been done

Havin' one girl who loves you

Right or wrong

Weak or strong

Don't know that I will

But until I can find me

A girl who'll stay

And won't play games behind me

I'll be what I am

A solitary man

Solitary man

Don't know that I will

But until I can find me

A girl who'll stay

And won't play games behind me

Then I'll be what I am

A solitary man

Solitary man

Solitary man

Solitary man

Assemblage 23 - Human

There have been times throughout my life

When I fell so far

I thought I'd never stand again

I watched my dreams depart

These aberrations had their place

In the grand design

But it's unnatural to feel

So bitter and resigned

Forgive me my mistakes

I'm only human

I bleed just like you

From time to time

So why can't I convince you

I'll be fine?

Ignore the writing on the wall

It just decorates

A place that I have lived so long:

Delusion's vast estates

There's nothing sinister at all

Gnawing at my soul

But these confessions that I give

Help me feel in control

Forgive me my mistakes

I'm only human

I bleed just like you

From time to time

So why can't I convince you

I'll be fine?

No absolution comes for free

And it never will

And those among us without sin

Are even rarer still

If imperfection is the lens

That you see me through

Don't be surprised if someday soon

That lens stares back at you

Forgive me my mistakes

I'm only human

I bleed just like you

From time to time

So why can't I convince you

I'll be fine?

Well, if poetry is song, I prefer Rudyard Kipling's "If".  Too long to quote here, but you can find it in any library.

Beware: Emancipated user.  No Windoze for me.
The teacher opens the door but the student must enter himself. - Ancient Chinese Saying

Every minute of hate in which one indulges oneself is sixty seconds of happiness lost.
Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent. -- Victor Hugo
If you always do what you've always done, you'll mostly get what you've always got.

Oh wow! What an awesome thread idea. I actually have a whole journal of my favorite lyrics.

One more time, won't you come remind me

I'm someone believed in

I'm someone still within your reach

'cause all I've got is sleep

against my fear of being swept away

by the wind. the undertow. the thought.

Admission: Regret - As Cities Burn

----------------

As we melt let's make no noise

oh the profanation of our love

to tell the world our passing joys!

and we, besides, care less to miss

out eyes and lips and hands.

But  honey I'm who you think I am.

And so you'll be to me

who must obliquely run

"thy firmness makes my circle just,

and makes me end where I begun."

there's nothing wrong

as I'll be somewhere singing all along.

Tell me, where have you gone my love?

Everything was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt- mewithoutYou

-----------

He laid emeralds in her eyes,

But I'd already tried a bracelet made of gold

and scarlet thread around her wrist.

Everything was wrong,

So we sang sentimental songs.

"Oh how seldom we belong but how elegant our kiss."

We painted crooked lines,

but we danced in perfect time to love so much refined,

we know not what it is but like a dullen

we pour into a grief we've known before

but never quite like this, never quite like this!

All I know now is regret,

it follows like a silhouette along the cobblestone behind us,

but has nothing to say except to innocently ask,

its voice as delicate as glass,

"Do you see me when we pass?"

But, I continue on my way.

Memphis Will Be Laid to Waste- Norma Jean

------------

The whole notebook is filled with lyrics, but I don't feel like typing anymore at the moment. I'll post back later with a few more favorites.

-Ellie

I won't post them all here, because that would be WAY too long. Here's one of my favorites, by none other than Bruce Springsteen:

Madman drummers bummers and Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat

In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps his way into his hat

With a boulder on my shoulder feelin' kinda older I tripped the merry-go-round

With this very unpleasing sneezing and wheezing the calliope crashed to the ground

Some all-hot half-shot was headin' for the hot spot snappin' his fingers clappin' his hands

And some fleshpot mascot was tied into a lover's knot with a whatnot in her hand

And now young Scott with a slingshot finally found a tender spot and throws his lover in the sand

And some bloodshot forget-me-not whispers daddy's within earshot save the buckshot turn up the band

And she was blinded by the light

Cut loose like a deuce another runner in the night

Blinded by the light

She got down but she never got tight, but she'll make it alright

Some brimstone baritone anti-cyclone rolling stone preacher from the east

He says: "Dethrone the dictaphone, hit it in its funny bone, that's where they expect it least"

And some new-mown chaperone was standin' in the corner all alone watchin' the young girls dance

And some fresh-sown moonstone was messin' with his frozen zone to remind him of the feeling of romance

Yeah he was blinded by the light

Cut loose like a deuce another runner in the night

Blinded by the light

He got down but she never got tight, but he's gonna make it tonight

Some silicone sister with her manager's mister told me I got what it takes

She said I'll turn you on sonny, to something strong if you play that song with the funky break,

And go-cart Mozart was checkin' out the weather chart to see if it was safe to go outside

And little Early-Pearly came in by her curly-wurly and asked me if I needed a ride,

Oh, some hazard from Harvard was skunked on beer playin' backyard bombardier

Yes and Scotland Yard was trying hard, they sent a dude with a calling card,

he said, do what you like, but don't do it here

Well I jumped up, turnedaround, spit in the air, fell on the ground

Asked him which was the way back home

He said take a right at the light, keep goin' straight until night, and then boy, you're on your own

And now in Zanzibar a shootin' star was ridin' in a side car hummin' a lunar tune

Yes, and the avatar said blow the bar but first remove the cookie jar we're gonna teach those boys to laugh too soon

And some kidnapped handicap was complainin' that he caught the clap from some mousetrap he bought last night,

Well I unsnapped his skull cap and between his ears I saw

a gap but figured he'd be all right

He was just blinded by the light

Cut loose like a deuce another runner in the night

Blinded by the light

Mama always told me not to look into the sights of the sun

Oh but mama that's where the fun is

One of my favorites by him.

I'm not a Beatles fan, but I have to agree with you, Crazyyaya, "Working Class Hero" resonated with me the first time I heard it when it came out and it still says something today. I've heard several great covers of it as well. There was a bootleg version by Blind Melon somewhere performed live that I thought was great.

I have to think a bit to come up with my favourite all time lyrics and I'll post later. Soldier of Fortune by Deep Purple comes to mind...
