I don't know wether farms decrease air pollution like trees do but they actually ADD to water pollution.

Yes, farms have their own water.  Don't let your underground water pipes touch the farm or your water supply will be polluted in no time.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

I've never seen that happening, I don't think water pollution spreads through the pipes, it just stays around the source of the pollution. Dirty industry also creates alot of water pollution and I've not yet seen that having any effect on R or C development in areas untouches by the pollution yet sharing the same pipes with the polluting industries.

The game lets me plant trees in some of my farms . . I don't know why. I did edit one of the farm lots (the ugly brown nothing one) to display grass instead, so I have nice green farms instead of ugly brown ones. However, I can still plant trees on the farms with furrows in them as well.

Maybe if you plant trees in the farm it can help reduce pollution (like planting trees in open grass areas).

SkiGeek is correct:

Farms which do not have water pipes running to them will use irrigation to water the fields. Notice the sprinklers?

There about 6 or 8 different crops on the farms, and some will accept more large trees than others.

I know of Orange Tree farms, that have Sims that climb on ladders to pick the Oranges. Also Apple Tree farms.

There is a lettuce farm, this probably accepts trees easier than those already having trees.

As for water pollution, YES! Farms are big time water polluters. In fact if you start your new city in the EASY mode, your pollution will be even more than if started in the Medium or Hard modes. Everything has a price.

As for pollution of the water pipes, yes this is true also.  Don't believe it? Try placing that expensive water pump in a mostly agricultural area, and it will get shut down almost immediately. All those simoleons wasted, shame!

For my Farm cities, I always use imported water. The pollution barriers at the edge of the city prevent my pumps from being shut down by pollution from the farm city.

I have to say that if you place your pumps in an area of the city which does not have water pollution, you can water the farms (though the point of that seems nil). It works the same way with heavy-polluter industries. Water pollution doesn't seem to travel through pipes. Just keep the pump itself away from the water pollution and you'll be fine, I've done it dozens of times. You might have to move the pump if pollution expands, however, so keep your eye on the water pollution map.

Pumps yes, pipes no. Pollution does not go through pipes from polluted areas to unpolluted. That was my point if I was not speaking clear enough.

OOoo I have never put a farm next to a river. I'll have to do that.

On another note has anyone down like a full break down of the effects of different difficulty levs, so I could ee what advantages/dissadvantages to each lev.

What I have found out is that farms do not help the environment.

Just download the Mega Air Cleaner to help your air pollution problems.
