SC4 vanilla, latest official update

Windows XP Pro SP2 32bit

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4 GHz  8MB cache

3008 MB RAM

GeForce 7900 GT 256 MB PCI-E graphics

Currently I have 4096 set for my page file size.

I had the same problem when I had no page file at all (what i originally had, but after reading here I tried setting it to enabled at 4096).

When I click the shortcut I get the arrow/hourglass for a second, and then arrow again and no process running. Same with Win2k compatibility. with Win95 compatibility the process runs and I can see SimCity 4.exe running in the task manager but nothing happens.

I tried it both from clicking the shortcut and clicking "Play" on the disc's autorun menu.

Isn't that a 64-bit machine?  I would consider making sure that you are not getting messed up by your processors.  Did you try setting to only use one core?

The processor can run at 64bit yes, but I'm only using 32bit windows.

And I can't set the process to use only one core because the process doesn't even run long enough for me to do that.

check the Microsoft site.  There is a fix for dual processors that may apply to you.  It sets the affinity.  I don't think there is much experience with Quad processors.  The only person I know for sure who has run one is Tungston.

I've installed WindowsXP-KB896256-v4-x86-ENU.exe , which according to the microsoft site is the patch I need.

But it still does the same behaviour. =(

And here I thought I'd be able to run the game nice for the first time ever when I got this machine.

I don't understand why every other app I have is fine, just not this one.

It is a legacy app, very old in computer terms.  The patch you loaded has to be applied to the properties of the exe I believe.  did you do that?

Well I am sure I have older apps than this running.

And in properties there's only the standard Compatibility mode options, and the display settings options. and the turn off advanced text services option.

You don't need to run in compatibility mode, or anything.  Just uninstall the game, make sure no files are left in the simcity program folders [except you might need to copy the plugins folder for backup].  Then reinstall the game, with the update patch, make sure if you use the shortcut to start the game that it has the right path.

Alright, I uninstalled, deleted the whole Maxis folder from program files (since I don't have anything third party installed on the game), installed, updated with UPDATE-SKU1-TO-P2.EXE, and still have the same problem.

Same problem with a fresh shortcut.

    Should the "Start In" be "D:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4\Apps" or "D:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4"

Original shortcut leaves off the "Apps", a dragged shortcut puts it in. Not that either of them work though.

Right, it is, the target is the same on both, just the Apps is left off of the official in the "Start In", not the target.

also different is that I don't have Deluxe, but th at shouldn't matter since i installed vanilla
