Residential Density Question

I'd like to get input on how you arrange your high density residential.

Do you spread it out among your low density in order to keep traffic down (does that even work?)?

Do you concentrate it and feed it to commercial/industrial through rail or road?

Do you concentrate it among commercial, reducing need for transportation?

Mike

I was asking myself the same question last night. I started building a city with medium density zones and all these apartments started popping up. I did nothing but build my average neighborhoods and they all turned into large apartment complexes. I had crazy commute times going, but then I placed about 40 bus stations all around my city's growth and that took care of the commute time. I think if you plan ahead for mass tansit, you can arrange high density however you want.

You really have to balance this out.  I am not averse to mixing HD R and C lots on the same street/road/avenue or whatever.  It is not necessary to isolate your R and C zones from each other.

If I place a high density R zone very far from the job sites, I generally use subway as a close connector.  If there is intercity traffic, I often use a combination of monorail and subway.

In all cases you need a good bus network.

I usually concentrate the high-res near areas of high commerce, but I don't mix them. They may be right across the avenue from each other, but they don't mix. I don't know why I do that, really...but I always keep them very close but definitely separate. I also usually don't zone high-density res out in the middle of no where unless there's a good-sized commerce area around to feed it. Maybe the odd tower here and there...

i allways concentrate res highrises near large traffic arteries close to the city centre / commercial district but as N_O_Body said i allways have a good bus / train system near the highrises. I don't usually have a massive clump of res highrises near each other which also helps stop traffic problems from occoring.
