Help with Mass Transit Please

i Have just come back to playing SC4 after a long break.  My problem is that my sims are not using the rail, bus or any mass transit despite the fact I locate stops at regular and close proximity to each other and I have passed the mass transit ordinance.  The usage never exceeds 1 or 2%.  The city population is 150,000 and I am getting a headache with traffic congestion. What am I doing wrong?

Did you make sure that stations are placed near residences and workplaces. Sims will only take the mass transit if the stations are near their homes and have stops located near their workplaces. Don't forget, Sims are fat and lazy and hate walking. They like to be able to walk 4 steps to the bus stop, ride the bus, and walk 6 steps into the office.

I vaguely remember that every type of mass transit had to have at least one station in each of the 3 types of zones.

Don't know whether that helps

Sims will not walk far, but passenger stations have lots of parking.

The main thing is that the rail route must be the shortest route to the job.  If taking road is shorter, Sims will drive.  To make any type of mass transit work you need lots of stations, (passenger rail are cheap), a good route, and probably bus transport to and from the stations at all points.

Another trick is to make it impossible to drive.  If the R neighborhoods are cut off from roads to work, they must take rail, eh?

Also make sure you have the latest (or any) NAM installed.

I like to set mine for 10x commute which enables you to build long distance, integrated mass transit networks.

A while back, I made a brief tutorial on a simple way to encourage lots of mass transit usage in this thread:

    (bottom of page)

That should give you a few ideas with which to work 4.gif
