The New York Times is reporting that Lady Bird Johnson, widow of former President Lyndon Johnson, has died at age 94.

I know she's been a fixture in Austin TX for many years.  She will be missed.

She will truly be missed. She has done such amazing work in Texas. I'm sure her husband would be proud of her if he were still here.

yeah it was on my news today ( i live in austin) she died with her family i hear at home which is so nice...she was quite the figure around where i lived and for a while we knew that she was going...her bodyguards actually played soccer with my little brother during a christmas church service once ( yeah we used to go to the same church) and like last week before she died she gave the church 300,000 dollars to pay off our debt for a new building we had built.

As I recall, she did a lot of work outside of Texas too.  If I recall correctly, the whole "beautify America" campaign, including radical notions like having trash cans in public places, was due to her work.  She got the ball rolling on a lot of things like that.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. Lady Bird left a huge legacy in Austin... The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and the Town Lake Hike & Bike Trail were her two biggest projects. And both are amazing; the hike and bike trail is heavily used and traces a great path around Town Lake.

And yes, she will be buried in the Johnson family cemetery. There's going to be a public viewing Friday and Saturday (At the LBJ Library on the UT campus), then on Sunday there will be a procession going from the state capitol in Austin, down Congress Avenue and a few other roads, and onto Highway 290 to the cemetery in Stonewall (the public can line up and watch the procession anywhere along the route, which is very long).

EDIT: The Daily Texan, UT's student newspaper, has a lengthy article about her and her legacy, including her efforts to clean up the highways. Read it here.

Exactly. She created a foundation that maintained beautiful wild flowers. I think if you drive down the highways of Texas and you see a huge bed of wild flowers, you can be safe to assume Lady Bird Johnson probably had a part in it.

Wild flowers on highway median strips all over the country, at least in areas where the climate can sustain them.   Having wild flowers native to the climate is a lot cheaper than trying to maintain grass.  and it's prettier.

I believe the word "litterbug" came into public awareness due to her campaigns.  On one level, the concepts of "clean up the litter, plant flowers" seems a bit obvious but it wasn't back when she was advocating these things.

On a local news station, they have a list of some of the guests attending. Neither George W. Bush nor his father are on the list, but their wives are. Bill and Hilary Clinton are coming, as well as Carter and his wife. Nancy Reagan was added to the list, as well as the daughter of JFK and the daughter of Ford.

I thought they said both the Bushes were coming, but neither are on the list.
