I don't get how people put up with non-stop looking at maps and pictures to recreate real cities This is a good one though

that's boring, no one want to see a map with some streets an nothing else. Please, create first the city or some pieces of the city and than show as it us!

Definitely. I lived in the Philly area (Norristown, to be specific) the first 5 years of my life. I'm real impressed with the detail you have put into this.

Very good.

You must have the patience of a saint because that looks like an awful lot of work.

I mean "Above and beyond the call"....

That 'gravel pit' there may be the crash site of United 93. 15.gif

Although I could be wrong.

You are.  Shanksville is several hundred miles west of Philadelphia, and anyway, United 93 didn't blast a deep, steep-sided crater into the ground.  Just a shallow gouge.  Even in a full power vertical dive (which United 93 wasn't in), a plane doesn't have all that much kinetic energy, compared to how much energy it takes to move dirt--they're mostly aluminum and air.

There ARE actual gravel pits and quarries in the area.  I can't tell where the one shown in the CJ is without seeing it in a wider context, but there are plenty of uses for the stone that underlies Montgomery County.

    I'm Back!

Don't worry, I never gave up on this project and I should have enough free time to post regularly now.

Because I am completely crazy, I have started over from scratch.  (It's not like that much was completed anyway.

    Here are a few teasers.

    What's going on here???

    th_49837_snapshot2_122_342lo.jpg

I haven't even rendered the terrain yet.

    What's with all these dots?

Man, from the mapping of the city of Philadelphia. This has got to be a tough city to design. But I really love the work you did.

    Rendering Complete!

The region is absurdly huge at 9x9 large city tiles.  That's 81 large cities or 1358 square kilometers.  I don't know if I will (or can) develop the whole thing.

Here is the region view directly after redering.  You can see all these little bumps.  The secret is I have placed the location of all main roads on the terrain map!

    philadelphia20080316snavd2.th.jpg

Here is a closeup.  I get these bumps by placing single pixel dots on the image to be imported.

Here is the downtown area.  You can see the outline of the streets.

I have also uploaded the map for anyone who wants to play with it.  (Requires 250m plugin)

    http://ifile.it/ev7h9dt

This is a bz2 archive.  If you don't know how to open it in Windows, use 7-zip http://www.7-zip.org/

PS.  I'm running the game under linux now and the terrain rendering was at least four times faster!  100% CPU usage the rest of the time though.

Deffinetly not boring... When you do a re-creation, you have to lay the network first...  Believe me, it is more intense doing the network first, rather than just going with the flow on a fictional city.. I am also currently woking on a re-creation of Philly and I laid out most of the network before laying my first zone.  I am waiting until I have at least one city tile 80% done before starting the cj though... By the way this looks really good,  you are strictly keeping to the map.... I personally like to add a little artistic license myself

Yeah. I think its near or in the same town of the Quecreek mine (which flooded) and all that stuff about the 9 miners. Happened about 7 years ago. Just so you know, if you pay attention to the national news.

Yes, they are both fairly close to each other.  I live only about 20-30 minutes from both sites.
