Random Crashes

As the title says, i'll be happily playing along, when suddenly the game crashes to desktop (CTD). The CTD usually happens after about 2 or 3 hours of play, but sometimes happens after only half an hour, and sometimes doesn't happen at all. It's getting quite annoying because i keep losing progress with my cities. Anyone else had this problem, and if so, is there a fix?

Welcome to Simtropolis, the game will crash if there isn't enough computing resources, say memory or even virtual memory. In terms of RAM, get 1gb. After I upgraded to 1gb, it becomes less unstable. With regards to virtual memory, I have no idea how it works. If you search around the forum, I'm sure you can find the info you need.

It shouldn't be a memory issue really, i have 1.5GB, and have played SC4 vanilla in the past without a problem. just recently reinstalled because i got Rush Hour. PC Specs (if it helps): AMD Athlon +3200 64-bit processor, running at 2.1Ghz ATI 256MB X800 Graphics Card 1.5GB RAM A friend of mine says it happens to him occassionally as well with his copy.

I also get pretty frequent crashes.  I'm used to saving every 10 minutes though because I used to run it on OSX (what a nightmare).  I have plenty of memory though-3GB, so that shouldn't be the problem.  I also have nothing added on, it's just a stock Sim City Deluxe installation with the latest updates.  Could be because I'm running it on an Apple machine with windows, but I generally don't have problems with any other programs.

    Mac Pro 3GHz

    3GB RAM

    Windows Vista

    PS:  What's NAM

Edit: (Nevermind, I just saw the answer to this in another thread)

I have the same problem but my computer's specs are great, but it still randomly crashes, usually on the bigger cities. My PC's specs: 2.2Ghz AMD Athlon X2 4200, 2 GB ram, 512MB 7300 geforce graphics, and almost 500 GB hard drive, and yet it still crashes randomly, but not every time I play...

So I have to build a small section, then save, then build some more, and save again. I have to save often cause I lost a lot of work not saving in time.

i think this game just doesn't like newer computers. there's probably very few people that are crash-free. when i first got this game (sc4 original), it would never crash on my old computer and laptop. now it has random crashes (using a new laptop, core2 duo, 2gigs ram), but they are infrequent and i don't mind. all i can suggest is that you run the most recent update for the game from the EA website. additionally, use of lots of plug-ins increases the likelihood of crashes, too. so, save often!

I play with a crash reminder mod that I got some time ago.  It is the BSC Save Alarm, and I suspect it must now be had from SC4Devotion's LEX.

Also, notwithstanding your machine hardware, make sure of:

    1. Your Virtual Memory space (Paging File) is maximized for your O/S
    2. All your graphics features such as AA are set to application selected
