Looks like the simcity website for Simcity 4 has been turned into a Simcity Societies website. There are plenty of new screenshots, and that's pretty much it for now. But, I'm sure we'll be needing to keep a close eye on this website!

Btw, I thought the Simcity Societies was supposed to be at simcitysocieties.com, not simcity.ea.com... Strange.

Edit: Also, there's the original Simcity 4 website and Simcity 3000 link on the right side of the page.

the thing i hate in this game are

-Cars (but ok, i can live with that)

-skyboxes. Edited-Content They can't make a single good skybox? Is sky that hard to draw, since it's standing object the AOE3 had made them much much better

One thing i think can be done better is density and also the sharpness of the textures.

I hope that more screens are shown of the landscaping portion of the game... that hill just isnt enough! Good nevertheless!

Agreed on the quality of the screens -- they are much improved.

I also share your concern for the roads.  Purely speculation: if they eliminated the other networks, would it stand to reason they eliminated the road network as well?

Look at this screen:

screenshot_1_big.jpg

Note that there are no roads -- dirt or otherwise -- connecting the houses.  You can see this very well on the hill in the distance.

It seems to me that road pieces are attached to the lots.  Like this:

onebldg.jpg

You plop a building, you get road around the lot.  When you plop another building immediately next to this one, you would get this:

twobldgs.jpg

You can imagine how else this plays out.  Basically, it looks to me that roads as we know them have been eliminated as well in place of a system that builds itself as you plop buildings.  It explains the above screen, and it explains why the roads we've seen so far are so bland.

The developers attempted to provide players with the opportunity to give their cities character, something I have always wanted in previous simcity versions. I admire them for trying to implement such an awsome aspect into the game. But it looks like they only managed to sap all the life and soul out of every detail. If these screens are anywhere near what this game looks like, it is absolutely abyssmal. I had kept an open mind until I saw these latest pics and read the "gingerbread houses" article. So frustrating too! It seems like they systematically eliminated from the new version everything that is most popular on simtropolis: realistic structures, variety, networks, flora, variation of props, and, of course, OPTIONS! From what we know so far, this game is based upon eliminating options for the sake of simplifying it. Unless all of this has been an incredibly poor job by EA at communicating what the game truly is, SCS appears to be next to worthless.

Edit: completely forgot the link. >.<

http://simcity.ea.com/screenshots.php

The third screenshot from the top going left to right. The one that's at night and is slightly less top down on its view... Are those cooling towers in the background?! Could it be nuclear power, suggesting that they haven't really scrapped the whole plop a power/pumping station thing?

There's hope at least...though I have to say, some of the newer screenshots are a little....well, the bump mapping is a little too extreme. It should be quite a bit softer... Easily tweaked, so I hope they do that before release. Anyway, just pointing out something I noticed and hope is a sign for perhaps a power plant.

ok, so. about the whole transportation thing, i dont know if this has anything to do with anything but, i saw a parking garage in a pic. but i dont think it was a buildings pg cus i havent seen a lot of other pgs anywhere else. also there is a small part of roadway that is diagnol. maybe the creators are just pulling our legs what with the no transportation/road variety? no?

    ...

    ...

I checked out the latest screenshots on the official site -- I gotta say, I'm still not optimistic. Frankly, it looks Rollercoaster Tycoon-calibre 3D rendering, which is not to say it's poor but kinda cartoonish looking. Just my impressions but the images lack a visual realism that I thought SC4 had come quite close to achieving. I thought that w/ SC5/SCS they would apply 3D rendering to take the realism to the next level -- I just don't see it in the screenshots. Maybe they aren't going for that ... I don't know, I just don't know anymore. 15.gif

I gotta say, both SCS and Spore are 3D and that picture's graphics look even better than Spore. It looks far less cartoonish than Spore.
