Hi there everyone this is my next attempt at a General Off topic thread.  Hopefully this one is a bit more intelligent....  than my previous attempts.... 33.gif

So here is a chance to post your favourite (favorite) Google Earth screen shots.

Please give a brief description so that we know what we are looking at.
Please remember to resize the default Google jpegs so they fit the 800x600 (sorry I got a bit confused there for a minute - thanks jacky)  limit.

So here we go...

TotoraFlat.jpg

This is the Totara Flat campsite in the Kaeuranga Valley, Coromandel, New Zealand.  No running water except for the river, a long drop toilet and about 20km from the nearest store up a winding narrow gravel road.

Nice idea for a topic. Here's a picture I took from Google Maps.

pompeiigq8.jpg

It's an aerial view of Pompeii, the Roman city that was buried under meters of ash following a volcanic eruption. A large part of the city is still hidden under the farmland you can see in the top right. This picture doesn't really do it justice, but it's still impressive. You can zoom in a few levels for more detail.

Before anyone else mutilates their pictures by sizing them down,  I offer the following advice:

if your image is larger than 800x600, just post the image as a link (or imageshack thumbnail) instead of directly embedding it in the post. This is preferable to sizing it down since you don't lose any info that way.

For one thing, the latitude and longitude in abcvs' pic are impossible to read, and other stuff is obviously scrunched up from the downsizing.

If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.
If you can read this, you deserve a cookie.

Thanks Duke - I have now signed up for Google Earth BBS so hopefully when I work out how I can post a KMZ there or whatever (which I can't seem to do here) and then make a link .... the internet is a freaking complicated place - maybe thats why they call it the web ...LOL.

Well this is my current theory...

    Stay tuned....

Edit:  OK so I clicked on Jan's linky .... yep that works better than mashing the pictures around ....  only one thing - my dutch is virtually non-existent!

Did you post the link  from the Google Earth BBS?  Can you tell me - goed ya?

    Stroopwaffle anyone? - Yum.

Is that Jan for John BTW?

Edit Edit:  Taking a leaf out of the Hamsters book....  yes bob does take you to Louisiana.  - looks very woody - my kind of place ... someone must live there - I can see some houses....

    So try typing in

    Kauaeranga

in the GE search box.... better cut and paste even I had problems spelling it...   There are camp sites all the way up the valley, mine is second to last before the end of the road.

Then and only then if you are feeling especially energetic .... cut and paste

    Pinnacles Hut New Zealand

No power, cold showers, solar lighting, 2 huge bunk rooms, the night we stayed there was some guy snoring that sounded like the chainsaw massacre all night...

... but be warned ... it is a hard 4 hours tramp straight up to the hut from the road end carpark.   Jelly legs extremo - that terrain is very rugged.   You go via the stairs in the rock, originally cut by hand by the Kauri loggers early last century so the pack horses could make it up the mountainside.  They seem to go on for ages - and when you get to the end of the steps you are only half way up...

They used to make huge wooden dams across the creeks and then let the water go - all at a predetermined time to wash the huge logs down to the Kauaeranga River below.  Most of the logs got smashed on the way and you can still see some stuck at funny angles across the streams on the way up.  The bush is starting to regenerate from the logging 100 years ago but all the really big Kauri trees have gone... they only take about 800 years to mature...
