question on editing regions

I just bought simcity 4 and love it.  however, i'm trying to change the terrain on my region. How do i do this.  I heard something about a bit map, but don't know how to do this.  I also want to increase the overall size of my region, and edit the size of individual cities but don't know how either?

one more question.  I'm thinking of creating a large industrial city, largly residential city, etc.  However, i'm wondering if there is a max distance that residents can communte to across the region?  any thoughts or advice on this particular way of thinking.  Thanks

Glad you like SimCity 4. For you first question, this is true. For more infomation read this. Although if you do this in an existing region it may delete your citys.

Im not to sure in how far they will go, but use rail, monorail, elevatedrail, highway and so on to achieve this. You can also use the NAM to make them travel longer distances.
