What does dispatching the police really do?

So far I've been dispatching to riots, mostly related to education, but nothing happens. Are they supposed to stop the riot? I'm I supposed to get a little message saying how ruthless I am for stomping a protest by force?

Are you referring to what happened on May 1st in LA? What those cops did was TOTALLY unnacceptable and should not be tolerated! Cops are fascist power hungry pigs that only serve the state and protect the rich. Police continue to abuse their power, and it must be stopped immediately! They brutalised innocent women and children for no reason at all. What started as a peaceful protest ended violently when pigs started a riot for nothing.

If it was about this wouldn't it be in the Current Events thread.  This is the SimCity 4 General Discussion thread. 

Also I am a Police Explorer (Kind of like training to be a Policeman) so before you start ripping on cops think about it.  Just because LA Cops are Idiot Pigs does not mean that all cops are.  If you ask me take out the words police officer and anything that has to do with cops in that paragraph you wrote and you just described yourself.

Anyways, I think the strikes in the game are actually supposed to be lawful pickets and you aren't allowed to use force to stop them.

This thread has completely gone off topic from what I originally asked. I'll try again. IN THE GAME, what is the point of dispatching the police somewhere in the city? The pop-up description says that dispatching the police where there are riots (maybe they use another word) helps stop them but so far nothing happens.

The things that happen outside of education and healthcare facitilities are simply protests from a lack of funding. Those aren't the riots, when a riot takes place it'll blink red in the news bar, and in the city there will be a group of people marching down a road, with smoke and debris flying away from them.

What you're experiencing are the protests, you need to raise the funding of the facility it's happening at to actually make the protests stop.

the police do help contain riots that break out if you dispach them to block

the rioters if you do it long enough the riots will cease.

Thanks DFire and BIWDC. I've only experienced protest in the game. How do you cause riots. I've been playing the game for years and I haven't seen a single riot I think. I've seen many protests

the funding on schools i think hospitals and police stations aswell

will get you riots if it's low enough & the protests last long enough

also put all kinds of nasty buildings near your sims like the toxic waste

Dispatching the police will reduce the crime level at that location by a tiny amount. I don't know the mechanics of it, but you can go to your data view screen and active the crime filter so it overlays the crime data on you city then use the police dispatch tool and call the cops to that location. If you keep doing it, you will see the crime level drop off for there. I've used it before to make my lots that are larger than 6x6 crime free (only for a short time, however). I think you can also use it to catch criminals. If you expand the data view map and look at the little crime icons on it, you can click on that map where the crime is happening and it will move you city view to that location. If you dispatch the police there, I think it might animate the police catching the criminal. I'm not sure since I've never bothered with that aspect of the game but I think I've read others talking about it.

I made a mod to make riots a lot easier. Check the STEX for uploads by me; it's in there somewhere. After you get a few riots, you'll quickly want to remove my mod and never use it again. ;-)

Alex Jones is a nut case, although I think his "police state" threads have some validity; however he losses all credibility with his 911 B.S.  I am an architectural designer, rather well-versed in mechanical engineering, and with 23 years' experience in aviation.  I did my architectural thesis on the collapse of WTC 1 and 2.  Not a single piece of the conspiratorial "evidence", which Jones presents, reflects the physical reality of either the WTC design and construction or the physics involved in a progressive  collapse.  Google General Ben Partin (USAF, Ret.) in reference to his 911 interview with The New American. You will get an understanding of the physical  processes involved in the September 11th attacks--and WTC collapse.  The physical facts  prove Alex Jones to be a overreaching uneducated demagogue, whose conspiracy theories should be completely dismissed by any intelligent person.

Yeah that lets you know you have protesters,but you still have to wait it out for riots.

I find dispatching police is useless except for riots. Even if you see the crime happening, the police does nothing. Protesters are harmless and I have never seen protesters becoming rioters.

It takes a lot of time in game and you will need to waste some money to get a riot in-game. unless you use the riot mod.
