Yankees sign Clemens

Anyone baseball fans have any thoughts on Roger Clemens joining the Yankees today?

I personally as a Red Sox fan am not to worried. Roger is 45 years old, he's got to pitch in the AL now and not only that, he's in the AL East. At best with the solid lineups in the AL he'll be a 5 inning pitcher. I'm glad the Sox didn't sign him. He does help the Yankees staff, but he doesn't help the bullpen or stablize their rotation issues.

I'm a bit unimpressed - but I could be wrong. Look at the numbers from his last four years in NY - his WHIP (walks/hits per inning) were pretty unimpressive - almost Eric Miltonish.

And, you are right in that he is not getting any younger. Last year, he averaged just over 5 innings per game - which means the Yankees terrible bullpen will have to retain whatever lead he leaves with.

I could be wrong about this, but I don't think it will make one bit of difference for the Yanks. Just another overpriced, overaged arm for their staff.

The biggest issue the Yankees have had over the last 2 or 3 seasons is that they have had to over use their bullpen because their aging rotation couldn't get them into the 7th inning. Guys like Gordon, Stanton, Proctor, Farnsworth had to pitch way to many innings, night after night and their arms are dead by August. Pettite hasn't missed the DL in the last 3 years, Pavanno won't pitch again, all these hammy injuries are the type that don't go away. It's like it was old timers day in the Bronx, everyone there is happy thinking he'll be the answer and the Rocket of old, but all he is is an old puttering Rocket. He also showed his true colors. Roger said over the winter he wanted to play for the team with the best chance to win but when it was all over, Roger is still all about the cash.

Way to much for 3/4 of a season. for the limited work he will get.

I was hoping for a nice Dodgers/Yankees trade . . . the Dodgers have extra pitching, and hey -- we need a third baseman . . . you see where I'm going?! :-)

All I know, the Yankees had to be pretty desperate to be getting this guy back out of retirement. So I'm not terribly surprised that NY signed him, as always, overpaid for him, like everyone else on their roster.

Roger said over the winter he wanted to play for the team with the best chance to win but when it was all over, Roger is still all about the cash.quote>

Couldn't have said it better myself. I used to like him when he was with the Sox and Jays.. then he signed with NY, the first time, and started doing crazy stuff like rubbing the Babe's statue in the bullpen.

He was pretty good in the Houston Astros. A lot of Astros fans are disappointed (including me). I can hear it now... Houstonians can officially say "bye-bye to the World Series." 15.gif

I'm not against bringing him to the Yankees. I just don't think that it's right to do what they did to Bernie Williams who has been with the team for 15 or so seasons, and then sign a 44 year old who was only there for 5 seasons for $28 million with special treatment to only show up on pitching days and start in June. Correct me if I'm wrong, but his ERA with the Yankees was around 4, and recently he only averaged for a little over 5 innings per game. At least the scrubs that start in what will be his spot in the rotation save an already lousy bullpen by eating innings as long as they don't bomb. If they wanted a 5 inning per game pitcher, they could've kept Jaret Wright, lol.
