Another crash thread.

Hi I'm not a normal regular user of the forum section but I have been checking out different things lately for sure. I have really getting back into sim city in the past little while after finding out that I still love this game besides its few errors and such. I'll start getting into the errors and crashes I am getting now.

So what happens is that I get into a city and start playing. After playing for some time like others one out of two possible things happen. The first is when I am doing some random thing like zoning or ploping down some trees it will stall and I won't be able to do anything unless I alt-tab or press my windwos key. I can usually go back into the game after this one and save still but I can't see anything so I have to exit anyway and restart because once I ctr-del this the game won't start up after unless I restart the pc.

The second problem I have is when I'm playing doing different things etc and whatnot the pc will just completely crash no desktop nothing. Now I'm thinking there could be various reasons for this like to hot inside so I tryed keeping it extra cool with a fan but that didn't really work. The other thing that could be a issue with it is the Graphics drivers. The problem is that I have a nvidia6200 which is a mighty fine video card but nvidias main(latest) drivers can tend to be really buggy so I had to offset this by downloading a earlier driver that would work with things like video's etc. The third thing I think I should mention is that I am installing through a iso(my own mind you...no warez) because my hdd's are taking up all the slots on my mb so that I can't install any software through cd's untill I get a bigger replacement hard drive I hope from my income-tax return. The reason I brought this up might be because the installation could also be buggy and not correctly work in this case so any suggestions would be helpful. Oh and one more thing before I forget but addons don't really have a effect on the crashes so don't bother asking the usual n(word) question about that because I have played both with addons installed and none and it still crashes.

I hope that was understandable and once I get these issues fixed up I plan on starting a cj when I can actually run a city from start withouth having the game crash on me all the time.

For openers, set your virtual space to 4GB.  The tutorial is above.  Let us know what happens then.

The only solution I know of is to save more often, or play much smaller cities... fast computers load up the buffers pretty fast when you have lots of things going on in a loaded up city.

I've been doing that lately but it will still crash. The other thing I did was do a complete reinstall from the Original deluxe edition cd I have and it seemed to work better for a while then it started shutting down when I installed some addons hehe...

I have been wary about changing this simply because I haven't tried it before but I will give it a shot to see if it will help.

Edit: The v ram seems to have worked on this so I will continue playing around to see if it totally fixed this issue. I should also mention that my cpu is a athlon 64bit so I don't think that speed is a issue.

You may have another problem other than memory overloading, but it is a very common problem with the faster computers. I have a city, close to 1mil and loaded to the gils, and I save after almost everything I do, and I have 2GB of physical memory.

So I thought that the v-ram was the problem but it turns out that it only sustained the gameplay for a little while but alas it still will shut down no matter what I try. I might just reinstall and play without any mods but I really don't want to do that.

Really? I've never had a problem. I have a Pentium D with 2GB of RAM and a 7600GT and it's taking this no sweat - in fact, I can actually *multitask* while I'm playing the game. (my old POS didn't have a hope doing that - it *barely* ran XP efficiently.

Well it turns out that it isn't simcity4 that is the issue in this case it is just a bad computer that will shut down for pretty much anything. I tried playing a different game like TDU and after a while it would do the same thing where it would just automatically shut down with no warning nothing. I can't really think that this could be a software issue since everything was working fine just a week or so ago but something must be messed up with probably the psu is what I'm thinking. Thanks for the help guys it did work for a little while though.
