I bet the people at Maxis considered it while developing the expansion pack...but then ethier 2 things could have happend.

1. They had to leave it out due to making a deadline

2. They thought about it but then thought "Why would they want trams if they get monorails and elevated rails? I bet people would rather use normal rails for that." and so they left it out

But if the 2nd is true, boy were they wrong! 3.gif not to worry though...NAM(Network Addon Mod) has GLR which adds a tram function to the game. It's a very useful system. Though it takes a while to place since you have to plop it all, but in the end, it looks great and works like a charm. 2.gif

Is that for real?? Trams are essential in many of my cities but its a pain to build them one by one.

Even more nice would be on-road trams and trolleys. That would give cities a much more "natural" feel, i.e. cities that started out as old 19th-century towns and later got so much traffic that they had to attach wires & rails to the existing roads.

Its called GLR (Ground Level Rail or something like that). I think its mandatory when installing NAM. When you go into the transportation button, under public transit, the icon looks like a rail track but its actually a tram track. It should be in there. When installing, save the game often because its been known to crash the game (it happens to me if I am not careful).

It usually crashes when your mouse moves over a diagonal GLR piece or a station. Most times it happens when you have antoher GLR piece.

I do believe frogface: I can imagine that EA planned to do trams - there are so many possibilities in SC4 EA never used because they turned to their money cow Sims and forgot Simcity ...

You can avoid most of the GLR related crashs if you first build the tracks and then the Stations. I do it that way, and everytime I have to change the GLR setup around a stations I tear down the station before I build the first GLR tracks.

Yay for Melbourne! The tram system works here, as well as San Fransisco & various European cities, so why wouldn't it work for virtual people?

Living in the US, I've not encountered many cities where trams are utilized (San Francisco and Sacramento) are exceptions. What advantage do they have over busses since they'd have to flow along with traffic? Maybe the Dev's were thinking the same and thought they'd be redundant.

Pros:

* Can adapt the number of carriages during peak hour

* Higher Capacity than buses

* 1 track takes up less space than a bus lane

* Can share track with trains, like in Karlsruhe, Germany & the old St. Kilda Rail in Melbourne

* Tram tracks show the route

* Higher Patronage

Cons:

* Tram tracks in roads can be blocked by cars turning across the tracks (not in Melbourne, we've got hook turns)

* You can flip a bike riding over the tracks!

* Idiot drivers crash into them

* Higher initial cost

In Melbourne, the Light Rail/Tram system works. And they're cool. They should be put in more cities.

We're getting trams (back) here in Edinburgh.

I like the idea, but it's a waste of money and the project is waaaaaay over schedule already (all they've done so far is divert the pipes/cables etc and it's already something like 6 months behind) due to conflicts between contractors/council etc.
