As many of you (hopefully in the US) know, Josh Wolf was freed from prison today, for protecting his source(s) relating to a WTO protest in the Us that turned violent.  I would really like to know everyone's thoughts regarding this rather unpublicized event.  I personally believe strongly in Freedom of Speech and think that journalists should be protected from vindictive governmental persecution when reporting on controversial issues.  What does everyone else think about freedom of the press, how to designate "press" stories, and how press freedoms fit into a country that espouses freedom of speech, but jails journalists who exercise their rights?

BTW, I contend that most, if not all, bloggers count as journalists and deserve protections, as such, especially in the case of stories with national impact.

Well, it's his video... he doesn't have to show it to anyone if he doesn't want to. I don't see what right the federal court has to say "gimme gimme" to something that doesn't belong to a suspected criminal and wasn't directly involved in the committing of a crime.

After all, you don't have to testify as a witness in any case if you don't want to. I would say providing video to a court also falls into that category. He can volunteer it if he wants, but he doesn't have to.

They throw him in jail for refusing to share his own private property with them. How fascist is that? 20.gif
