Nuclear Power?

I remember from past simcities that if your nuclear plant degraded or if you demolished it you'd get radiation issues in your city.  Is this still the case in SC4?   I've avoided nuclear because I've been afraid I can't demolish it later, and I'm concerned what would happen over time if it melts down.

Well there could be a meltdown but that's rare if u have good fire coverage all over the city to prevent fire hitting and if the power plant doesn't get too old. For fires the ordinance enacted will help alot. Sims and high tech loves the ban of nuclear if strong energy sources like hydrogen is provided instead. Mayor rating will go up some +7 and the ban cut's down the demand for dirty industry at some.

cool, I'll have to enact the nuclear free ordinance then, since I don't even have any nuclear. Actually, don't ask me how but my mayor rating has been completely maxed for a while.

I actually use nuclear all the time when I get a chance. I have been careful not to exceed the power useage of the city so I don't get nuclear meltdowns. As long as the power consumption is <80%, you should have a safety blanket in case something does occur. I am not so worried about mayoral ratings because, like Tomkat, its pretty high.

Well, my main question is will it melt down if I demolish it? Can I bulldoze a nuclear plant like any other building?

Yes you can demolish it without it going Chernobyl on you.

I put a matter/antimatter plant on the STEX, but it needs a lot of water to use as fuel.  There is also a very high capacity artesian water plant.  These two are also strong pollution removers.

I use hydrogen instead of nuclear power. I don't like it, brings my city down to the underground.

More pricey Hydrogen I know but oh well.

I use nuclear when ever it comes along, it cheap and safe as long as you dont underfund it and have decent fire protection.

By the way just noticed my station in your signature pic N_O_Body. Yey

Nuclear power is ridicoulsly expensive. Coal is $0.04/MW, Nuclear $0.19/MW, nearly 5x more expensive. I also can plant 3 coal plants with price of 1 nuclear plant. I have one small industrial city burning trash & selling power, it has already 10 coal powerplants. I don't see a point building anything else than coal unless you can't export the energy. It's very nice that city boundaries block only the pollution 2.gif

I only use nuclear in my "power" cities.  I find that nuclear power has the power I need to supply a power hungry region.  Hydrogen is great for the amount of power available, but it doesn' t last as long and is terribly expensive to replace.  Nuclear last longer, is less expensive to replace and is not too dangerous.  You just have to keep a close eye on it so it doesn't melt down.  However, with all that said, I usually use a mixture of Hydrogen, Nuclear, Solar and Wind power to supply my regions.

I use nuclear power occasionally, but I never use the in-game plant because IMO it doesn't provide enough power. I know cogeo uploaded a set of plants that have upgraded capacities, that are high enough to support a large city or even more.
