I want a city in a reigon to kind of be a ceneralized downtown area. If i build low density housing in the neigboring regions, and lots of commerical zoning in the region i want to have a downtown, will this work?

It depends on the way you drag your road network. At first sight, it could be the simplest way to plan a city, but be careful on how you do your suburbs and districts.

An improving way of learning how to plan, you should take a look at the CJ sections. There are som many ideas you can take from some of them to your town.

Another one, but more challenging, is to look how your hometown is planned, and try to recreate that.

Do a brainstorm, a paper chart, ask people.

Good luck

How do you plan your city? I always end up putting stuff in the wrong place, however good I think of it before I start to build. It seems to me it has something to do with my starting position, in the corner of a citysquare.

Also, with the regionplay and building two cities next to eachother, one for industrie and one for residential, I get the problem that the city without power station doesn't ask me to get power from the city with powerstation.

Btw, I just opened a city that was build as one with only residentials, next to one with industrial and power plants, and my residents didn't receive any power at all, they just pleaded for power plants, not for energy from the neighbouring town with plenty of energy to spare, and so they fled away in no time.

I usually build my downtown with straight roads only, then drag a highway around (the downtown ring) and outside more diagonal roads and streets. Because of the fact that I play SC4 in the hard mode, I can't really "plan" by building roads. Anyway, I hope I helped, will show you some pics later!
