I don't post often (like ever), but this topic caught my attention. While it is horrible that many of these great historic Detroit buildings are being torn down, it is sometimes a necessity. This and many other old buildings (looking at you Wurlitzer Building) are literally crumbling into the streets. There are covered walkways on some streets because of falling materials. I avoid certain sidewalks because I don't want to get hit in the head with decorative stonework. A parking lot might not be sexy or super useful, but in the case of these beyond repair situations, the only option. Again, I hate to see beautiful buildings destroyed, but how long can we endanger pedestrians while playing the development waiting game?

I look forward to posting here more often!

No, I totally agree with you. If a building is a danger to people, and there are no chances that it can be restored, then it needs to be demolished. I am a huge proponent of historic preservation, but sometimes the right decision is to demolish. However, I also think that a lot of times in Detroit there may be alternatives to demolition, but since demo is the quickest and easiest, that's what gets done. And I am also critical of the city government: so many times they allow powerful property owners (like Mike Illitch or  Matty Moroun) to do really shady things with historic buildings without any consequences, while getting in the way of legitimate developers and entrepreneurs trying to do something positive.

And ultimately, it's just sad to see another beautiful building go down for another unnecessary parking lot.

I'm glad you decided to post! Hope to see you around the forums more.

life-after-people, Detroit version

How original. The core of Detroit and Midtown are bustling with activity and rapidly growing. In fact, it is difficult to find apartments in those areas because demand is so high.

It's nice to see one of my favourite cities; one which I spend a great deal of time in, coming back to life. I've been afraid for a while now that the Motor City would continue along its downward path since the advent of the Detroit Riots, especially the one in '67. Glad to see things are turning around! on another note, I'm sure you could figure out a way to include this building in-game.

Speaking of, here's a great story just posted on Curbed Detroit about a coffee shop reopening in a revitalizing Capitol Park:

Too bad it's too awkward to fit in the game!

Surely someone with your BATting skills could sort out some kind of workaround to get this in-game.

I don't think that would be possible, lol

The building is triangular which makes it difficult.  And then it's also very small.  At its deepest it's 4.5 meters (one tile in the game is 16 m), and at its narrowest it's 1 m.  And the full width of the building is only 13 m.

The main part of downtown is a geometric beaux arts planned city kind of thing, with lots of diagonals and geometry and axises and things which I think is lovely for real life but can be very difficult for SC4:P

I've been mulling over Detroit recently, and figured I could look over the BSP releases for the Book-Cadillac Hotel (now the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel), which I sadly did not find.

However, there's more out there that I could surely give a spin, so I'm not complaining.

    What's next for BSP?

The reason I asked was this tantalizing tidbit back in January.

Apologies for the low BSP output this year. The only consolation is that we delayed our projects because we have big (but also secret ;) ) plans for 2013 and it's been taking a while to get everything together. :D

Unfortunately, in August, we have this.

    No new news.  :)

Seeing as how real life and other projects have prevented my own BAT from coming to completion, I'm not at all upset at this turn of the events, just a bit disappointed.  ;)

Some good Detroit news; The Wurlitzer Building was just purchased, There's plans for a new 16 story building on Capitol Square, renovation on the David Whitney Building is underway, the David Stott and Free Press buildings were purchased, and the Tigers are in the playoffs.

    What about the Guardian Building?!?

It would definitely be one of the best buildings in Detroit to bring into the game but it's such a complicated building that doing so would be a big undertaking.

btw we have a new thread for mipro/BSP which is in my signature. :)
