Welcome to my Simtropolis City Journal,

I am happy to see that you have found your way to my CJ. This is my second CJ on Simtropolis, the first I made is City of Zwijndrecht. While building the cities and writing the CJ I learned a lot about the game. The constructive comments of visitors to my CJ helped me to improve my cities. Now the time has come to set up a new CJ better organized, and much larger the previous.

Gameplay:

I try to play the SimCity as fair as possible. This means that cities will have to be able to sustain themselves instead of relying cheating (money-mods, typing monkeys, etc.). Although the cities have to support themselves I always have the goal to take the best possible care of the Sims living in the city. Taking care of those Sims is done by; full coverage of medical, safety, and educational services, plenty of recreational facilities like parks and stadiums and a nice and clean environment (no pollution). All these facilities while asking for reasonable taxes of 9%.

Furthermore I make use of the most common mods like the NAM-traffic Mod, Jagged Edges Mod, Hole Digging Lots V2, Slope Mod V1, etc. Besides these mods a large amount of BAT's as well.

The Region

My CJ's are always about a region and not just one city, the previous region consisted of about 10 small cities with a total population of 600K. For my new CJ (Cape Newenham) I have planned four large cities to start with, in the region view you can see the position of the four cities (Figure 1).

Figure 1: Regional view of the four cities of Cape Newenham

000_grid.jpg

To build a great region and interesting CJ I decided to accurately plan my region before starting of with building the cities. I started of with planning the zoning for all four cities. I divided the zoning in "Rural", "Industrial", and "Residental / Commercial". I took residental and commercial in the same zoning because of the dense mixing of zoning in these areas. Below you can see the zoning for the entire region and the zoning per city.

Figure 2: Regional zoning view

Infrastructure

After having completed the zoning for the region and all the cities i continued with planning the appropriate infrastructure. In the pictures above you most likely already noticed the placement of air- and seaports, this is the first step of developing the infrastructure of Cape Newenham. Again i first drew the infrastructure on a regional level, setting general guidelines for the placement of rail- and highways (Figure 7). After having completed the regional view I had to translate those general design characteristics to a city level. Translating from a regional level to a city level proved to be harder as I estimated at first notice. The infrastructure on a regional level is drawn without notice to the limitation of city tiles (the little squares on a city map), you have to stick to the 45 degree angles that are forced upon you by the tiles. In Figure 8 to 11 you can see the infrastructure on a city level with respect to the directional limitations of city tiles. In these city plans for infrastructure i planned the local train stations as well.

Plan de Campagne

With these plans for developed in mind I will start developing the Cape Newenham. I believe in steady and slow evolution of cities, starting small throughout the region and developing larger cities and bigger buildings a long the way. In order to take maximum advantage of region play I don't develop one city at the time but will be skipping from City 1 till 4 and back again. Building the region gradually with an equal dispersion of population and employment will contribute to a stable region without excesses in population, employment, traffic, pollution, and money, because of the equality in the region the cities can support each other in their growth. I will start of with the rural areas in City 3, then adding some industry, residental and commercial in City 4. From that point on I will asses the situation and develop the region accordingly.

I hope you all will enjoy visiting my CJ "Cape Newenham", I certainly enjoyed myself planning the region. The constructive criticism of visitors is more then appreciated, because I really would like to build an amazing city and write a fantastic CJ.

Nice intro!

But IMHO you should plan highways and railways independet on each other as they were planned and built in differebt eras and often follow different needs and purposes. So close to each other is more a layout for High Speed Trains such as the ICE (think about the track Frankfurt/Main - Köln).

Anyway I will follow this!

Let me welcome you again to my CJ of Cape Newenham.

@jacqulina: Good to see you in my new CJ as well. I hope you will like it, i am really excited to get started again!

@Nardo96: Thanx for visiting and commenting on my infrastructural plans. You could very well be right about you remarks, and I will give it some serious thought on how to cope with this new information. I think the main railway lines along the highways will be sustained but a finer grid of railways, busses, metro, monorail will connect to it.

@alicelli: Thanks for visiting, stay tuned for more!

@Schulmanator: Good see you found my new CJ as well, stay tuned for more.

@Equilibria: Welcome to my CJ of Cape Newenham. One of these days I will take a look at CJ, if you live up to your name (equilibrium) it could be very interesting for me.

The pictures below are from the rural community "Beemsterdam". This small florishing community is in zone 3 of Cape Newenham. The railroad track is in place, later i will add the highway and a small harbor area.

The city of Beemsterdam, will consist fore most of farms and small residental building. Furthermore you will find some tiny commercial establishments and a few medium industrial plants. The commercial area are for stimulating the community to grow, and the industrial is necessary to provides jobs and simoleons.

I did some editing to the Jeronij plopable seasonal trees. Instead of $5 they have monthly cost of $1. They were too expensive to decorate my community, but they look so great and therefore i changed it. The canals are unedited and cost the origanal set values.

    beemsterdam-000.jpg

In this picture we can see both the resevoir for supply water to the city and aldo one out of two generators that power the city.

    beemsterdam-001.jpg

    beemsterdam-002.jpg

Notice the water pumping windmill in the canal. This was the first water source of the city. When the windmill failed to meet demand the resevoir was build, since then water supply was sufficient.

    beemsterdam-003.jpg

I really love how those dirt track trails give that extra touch to you rural area.

    beemsterdam-004.jpg

    beemsterdam-005.jpg

I think that the Jeronij seasonal trees look phenomonal!

I got my inspiration from the very best terraforming CJ on Simtropolis. I dont think I have to mention her name, because we all know who i am talkin about.

I must say I am a bit envious now ... I never got these small Waldau farms growing even though I tried VERY hard as Kwakelaar send me the beta versions just before my PC went on hiatus for months ...

Good work with Darmoks TE dirttracks - and I guess you received quite some worthy inspiration from Darmok's great CJ (which is no offense at all - inspire and get inspired is one of  the mains things of doing a CJ IMHO)

I like this small ponds with the autumn trees around. And I like that you didn't use the raods there but only the streets.

As far as I can see you put a PEG freight station at the railway tracks. I don't like this because freight cars need to stay some hours or days at a freight station. Without a siding they would block the whole raiwlay line. On the other side there are no freight station with integrated siding like the one I modified for Darmok available AFAIK

Anyway I did enjoy your updates! 2.gif

PS: Compared with your first updates at all here you REALLY learne how to use trees ... 9.gif

I am about finished with Beemsterdam, my rural city. Now I am working on a new city, named Amstelberg, that is right next to Beemsterdam. I have some quick pictures for you to keep you up to date of the progress. They arent fancy pictures with a lot of eye-candy and custom content, but very plain sim city pictures. I am still looking for nice small residental buildings on the STEX (a lot of residental on STEXis high rise, which i dont need at this point).

Like I promised here some pictures:

On the overview picture you can see how the city is devided in residental and industrial areas. On the right is some really dirty industrial development, which account for 95% of the jobs in Amstelberg. On the left there are two residental areas devided by an avenue. In between the intersection of the avenues there is a small commercial area, but due to lack of education facilities this area is developing very much. I only added some kindergartens after 13 years (or something like that).

    amstelberg-000.jpg

One of the two kindergartens. Each of the kindergartens take care of approxamatly 250 children.

    amstelberg-001.jpg

Cheap and crappy ass apartments, flourish in my city. I think these cheap appartments are very appropriate for my low wealth, low educational, dirty industrial city.

    amstelberg-002.jpg

Some of the dirty industries, they are ruining my planets athmosphere! As you can see in the upper right corner of this picture i am in dire need of garbage disposal. I guess i will add a landfill next time i play the game.

    amstelberg-003.jpg

The only bright spot of the entire city, where a building past glory still stand tall above the rest of the city.

    amstelberg-004.jpg

The connecting avenue and railroad to the Beemsterdam.
