ive found that, like other posters have said, keep high wealth res taxes high keeps the rich from coming to your city in clumps, then leaving in clumps when they cant get hired. That commute time thing is probably just a problem with the rich. I guess they drive around all day looking for $$$ jobs and cant find em, so they leave.  The middle class, and poor, usually dont leave because of long commutes.

Your problem is not your road lay-out, it is very simply that your sims don't have the appropriate jobs. I've been through this same thing dozens of times.

Whether or not you have R$$$ in your cities you will eventually build up demand for CO$$$ and CS$$$. The demand for these type of buildings take time and aren't dependent on R$$$ sims actually living in your city. Most of the people who work in either C$$$ are R$ and R$$. Very few R$$$ sims actually work in any type of facility (commercial or industrial) until you have extremely huge offices because they basically fill upper management positions. Once your city is large with huge offices, then more R$$$ will be hired because those type of businesses use more.

Even if only 5 or 10 sims use your Mass Transit ( Bus Stops / Subways ) it still helps. Once your city reaches 20,000, place a subway anywhere ( If you have proper demand ) and a skyscraper or large building will pop-up. Its a lot of lost cash, but keeps those high wealth happy [ at least subways do ]

I have 4 cities in my region a 300k citizens each! I got all avenues in each city and I got very well planned subway systems, I also have highways connecting all 4 cities and each city have an airpoort! =) the commute problem started at 300k in all 4 cities at once and they all got abandonded causing bad economicall problems! whatever I did I couldnt fix it, spent hours and hours reading through simtropolis and other forums trying everything with no result! all cities went bankrupt!! god dammit I play on easy mode! =)))

icmajk, building subways system early in the game is a waste of money, you'll need to wait until population reaches 26000, and some skyscraper whatsoever zone, RCI, and then you build it, The way is bus stops at the Fisrt beginnign,

BUT, if you al ready have that population size, you'l better check your Funding level, or place stations strategically, so BobSim, can go form point A to B, is beter to build them shortest possible, oh and build a Public parking garage in intersectons, So BobSim can leave his car there, (if he lives far from station), oor place 6 tiles long, pedestrians wont walk more than 6 TILES, Good Luck. 1.gif

I never even give much concern to traffic issues until I've established the city to my general liking. Your going to find that most of your preplanning was a good start, but many things must be demolished because ideas will change along with demands, yours and those darn Sims. Roads, highways, buses, trains, and ferries and they either over use the heck out of it or just ignore it all together.

    Spiffy - some suggestions:

For best results, place the C between R and I. Sims live in R, work in I, and pass by C. C with traffic = demand, thus they grow.

To avoid abandoned mansions, don't let sims build them in the first place. How? Tax the rich, and do 1x1 or 1x2 lot sizes.

I suggest reading this excellent tutorial in the omnibus: https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=146&threadid=78505&enterthread=y

The most important thing you can do is install NAM and I wouldn't worry about getting to many $$$ folks seeing how there a pain to please not to mention lazy.Have fun and goodluck.

I have the same problem with my city. There is a section of it on the coast that houses about 70k R$$$ people, basically the richest part of the city. There are always the same 4 buildings that have job problem. They would go from good --> no job --> abandon --> good again. It just keeps on cycling from good to abandon and back. I built tons of commercial offices in the back, even plotted down 2 giant buildings with 5000 jobs each and they still can't find job. My city only has a population of 90k, and there are more than 200k commercial office jobs available.

Commute time is a serious issue in this game, I meant, I commute through several cities to work, and the Sims won't even go to work because the job is on the other side of town?

Yiplong, may I suggest faster, or different means of transportation? Such as the monorail, or even closing off all road connections, and forcing the sims to take a ferry?

Another suggestion is to rezone the area so that it remains low density, thus minimizing the effects of abandonement, if they do abandon. Perhaps rezone some R areas closer to the jobs (and with good transportation connections) closer to the job sites?

That, or making jobs closer to the buildings in question?

It says to wait for one thousand people in the instruction book before you put in water but I usually wait for 10,000 before I put in water. That way my city will be big enough to look realistic with high density buildings and it also allows education and health to go up over the period of time.

High IQ=High tech Industry and commercial=lots of jobs for rich sims.

Maxis better fix the commute problem in simcity 5.

    hi,

is it possible to download a mod that increases the distance sims can travel for a given time? i don't want to install networkaddon because that also changes other parts of the game, i only want to shorten commuting times (=increasing max distance sims can travel)

    thank you

ps: please read this article re commuting time http://www.sc4ever.com/knowledge/showarticle.cfm?id=1128&openItemID=cid.54,cid.45,cid.55,cid.53

I'm not sure, but I think the NAM is the only tool that helps with traffic times/distance.

What I like to do when I initially zone out neighborhoods is that i try to make them a fixed maximum size -- typically about the bussing range of the Elementary school for residential neighborhoods -- and try to border it on 2 sides by crossing avenues. The neighborhood consists of streets -- laid out any which way you want -- but I would recommend either a grid or something that can be later upgraded to a grid without destroying zoned buildings if you're planning on upgrading the neighborhood to something denser at a later time. Two crossing roads connect the neighborhood to the bordering avenues as close to the middle of the neighborhood as possible, keeping in mind that the neighborhood streets should never touch the avenue (otherwise Sims may try to use them to funnel their way to the avenue, creating a traffic nightmare). Further neighborhood streets should never cross over and touch the streets of bordering neighborhoods either. Initially, the access roads shouldn't cross into bordering neighborhoods either (thus forcing the sims to use the avenues), but can be later installed as a quick fix for alleviating congestion problems at the avenue/road intersections. This forces the majority of Sims to go out to the road and avenue (and eventually freeway later in the game) to get to work in a realistic-looking way. Only avenues should connect to major commuter hubs train stations on railroads leading to another town or (later in the game) freeway interchanges. Avenues can also be upgraded to a freeway for a section intersecting another freeway to create a really high-volume intersection that can move ridiculous amounts of traffic well.

Confused yet? Here, I'll try to draw an ASCII diagram:

    A=Avenue, R=Road, r=residential neighborhood w/streets*, c=commercial (installed later as demand dictates)

*A block should be left open near the middle of the neighborhood cell for future civic structures (schools, parks, etc.)

PhantomSoul, wow! Ok to deep, just wait a sec, I'm writing this down. lol No just kidding, it's just that there isn't one sure fire way of setting up a network that works for all cities. So many variables, no perfect method to this madness we call SC.
