Thanks for the compliments guys.  I think it looks pretty cool too.  Since ALTX pointed out that this map's scale is more cramped than what it should be, I'll probably make a city journal of just the northern tip of the SF peninsula, but more detailed and with every street.

To answer some of the questions...

I've probably put in at least 4-5 hours in every city, and plenty more (12-20 hours)on the San Francisco peninsula cities of "Downtown", "NW SF", and "Potrero/Visitacion/Mission/Bayview".  So far there are 46 cities with names, and probably 9 of those are just roads/freeways that just took me 30-45 minutes.  So I'm thinking like 234 hours, or nearly 10 full days?  This is just a guess though.

This region is different than the standard one that Maxis supplied with the game.  I found it on Carch's website, if anyone would like a copy then PM me with your email address and I'll email you a copy of it and the special config.bmp that I made to be able to place the Golden Gate Bridge (amongst other landmarks).

Frankly, I'm actually glad that this is finishing up.  I'm kinda sick of San Francisco and I'd like to make a more rural region without all the city clutter & medium & high densities.  It's probably going to end up being Sonoma County with all it's little & medium sized cities connected by winding country roads with lots of trees and vinyards throughout.  Stay tuned for that one when this is finished...

Small update.  This is a picture of a neighborhood in San Bruno (San Mateo County, South of San Francisco) near Monte Verde Park.  I've developed a new style (it's new to me) of creating suburb like residential housing tracts where the homes are right next to each other.  I'd like to keep it all low density, but by zoning 1 x X low density the homes never popped up, or if they did, they would be 2x1 not 1x1.  So I had to zone medium density to get only 1x1 residential structures to appear, very rarely does a 2x1 show.  More often I get a 2x2 R$$$ to appear.

    /idealbb/files/monteverde.jpg

I am only a few hours away from completing the entire region.  I'll be able to finish it up this week and post quite a few more pictures by the end of the weekend.  Included will be a HUGE surprise picture 2.gif

I remember San Mateo.  Back in my Navy days when I was stationed in NAS, Alameda!

I like the idea of low density suburbs!1.gif  I can't wait to see your completed suburbs.  I'm subsribing to your CJ, eppisgood.

I really like your city, maybe you could use Trolca's brick roads for Lombard road?

This is quite an impressive replication.  The homes on the hills looks very impressive.  The financial district is incredible as well.  I love sanfrancisco.  All those cities on the west coast are amazing (except LA).  The time investment in this venture is amazing.  Just a question.  What is the actual population of the area you are modeling?  is it 1.6 million?  Awesome job.

It looks just like San Francisco. Lombard looks like it needs a little elevation. Still good though

Thanks for the plethora of tips & compliments guys.  I'll look into Trolca's brick roads (that would be very Lombard-esque) amongst the other suggestions.  I'd probably guess the population of the real life area that I am reproducing would be almost 2 million or so... I used the website http://www.citypopulation.de/USA-California.html#i9494 to do some quick calculations, and it ran up to 1,585,708 and I still didn't add in any of the Marin Co. population and some other cities.  If you'd like a copy of the region, feel free to private message me your email address and I'll email it to you the same day.  The region isn't found on the MEX, but ALTX's version of this region (the scale is more proper to SC4 it seems) is there.

From what I understand of Download: Trolca's Street Modd is that it only places the red cobblestone roads in high wealth low density areas.  Since the area around Lombard is medium wealth medium density, I don't think it would work properly.  I thought it might let you place the cobblestone roads specifically where you want them to be.. correct me if I'm wrong though.

Here's a wide shot of the downtown section of San Francisco.  I'm going through the region and touching up areas, etc.  One thing I noticed in this 'city' is that there seems to be some sparse abandonment within the R$$$ and R$$ population, mostly R$$$.  The R$$$ population is less than 15-18% of the total population of this city.  And the number of C & I jobs nearly equals the amount of people who live in the city.  On a side note, is it unusual to have more residents than total jobs in a city?  Because in almost everyone of mine it seems that way.

I have enjoyed reading your journal very much and can't wait to see your next project. I am quite impressed with the accuracy of the region. I live not too far from there, so I head into SF occasionally, and your representation is great.

Here's the final update that some people might've been waiting for.

Like the picture above, this is just a 'thumbnail'.  To see the enlarged version you have to click on the link below the pic.

    sfdetailedthumb.jpg

What I've done is took pictures with the furthest zoom camera and have meshed them all together so it looks like one continuous city rather than 7 seperate cities.  The picture below has the different areas of San Franciso labeled so you can know what I've built.  It is rather quite large, about 925k in size and is 3480x1870, but it is worth downloading it if you like this city because it'll put everything into perspective.  I can't get rid of those green highlights on the educational buildings in the Sunset District, and on accident I dispatched my helicopters off the screen in the Potrero/Bayview city so they constantly fly around with those blue locaters the entire time.

I won't say that I won't post anymore updates, if you'd like close ups of particular areas or something feel free to ask.  But I won't be building anymore in this region.

It's right around 850,000 if I remember.  That would be just San Francisco County.

If anyone would like to have this region, I will only send it via MSN Messenger due to it's enormous size when ziped (110MB).  So if you would like it, then private message me your MSN Messenger screen name so I can send you a file.  Note: I will only be sending the file out outside of the 9AM-7PM PST hours, for I am at work and use MSN Messenger exclusively to correspond with co-workers during that time.

Wow, that looks awsome(better than the first, evan though I thought that it was the best). The downtown in great. Not like some cities where there are a blob of highrasies.

Woah! Now that's a good realistic city. One question though, Are you going to add the TransAmerica Pyramid (by ed_diaz) now that it's been released on the BAT exchange?
