I guess that industrial is the most difficult aspect to do well, since most of the people never really walk around industrial areas.

So I was wondering, in relation to a city, what is a good way to make realistic industrial zones?
How should they look?

Thanks

Take a look at CJ's .. You'll find almost every one has an industrial district. Take a look around your own town,... What does the industry look like? Realism is in your own mind.. Get some ideas and do your own. They all work fine in SC4.. and many custom lots are available in the STEX.. Just do a search on "industry"

If you're in the UK, try Windows Live Local (local.live.com) or Google Earth if you're in a hi-res US zone to get a good idea of your town's. If all else fails, look at the Birds Eye Views of London (East Grenwich), Fareham (Boarhunt) or Southampton (Redbridge) on Windows LL.

Yeah, like p4p said, Live Local, Google etc great for getting ideas. Check out railyards, shipyards & ports, etc.

Boston, L.A. etc you can find tons of those areas.

As far as I know, most heavy (and dirty/old industry) is normally on a city's waterfront near seaports and rail/etc. Newer industry (warehouses, high tech, manufacturing) is normally built way out in the suburbs. Finally, a lot of cities are attempting to revitalize their waterfronts by removing this old and dirty industry.

By holding ctrl when you zone industrial you can control how buildings appear. I find it very helpful for making things realistic.

If you're going for realism, I can help. I think.

Probably best communicated in a PM, but if you'd like, I can upload a (relatively incomplete) Word doc I've been working on about realistic SC4.

also, when zoning hold dow control and zone 2x2 2x3 3x3 3x4 and 4x4 plots. arrows will appear on the side of the box facing the road (like C and R zones) this will limit the "randomness" of the industrial areas and allow you to dictate the size of buildings moving in.
