Streets Vs Roads / Traffic Question

I've been playing Deluxe since 2004. Streets are little capacity inside a neighborhood, someday will probably get crowded and you have to upload to a road. The road is more effective, but more polluting and there is more traffic, so the people won't live in front of a road, because of that simple desirability factor Traffic. My cities are always crowded by traffic.  I have been living that trouble for all my city's life, What do I have to do... Only to place commercial and medium and high density Residential?or simply I don't upload the street. Why some people have so many roads in their cities, with their houses or buildings distressed?

Hi,

I thnk the best way is to buil public transport and enact ordinances to get your sims away from cars. It will be hard, however because they insist in using cars. A few modds may overcome the problem.

I agree with constantina, if you have such an overwhelming amount of traffic on your roads that houses are abandoning, it's time for Mass transit.  also, try upgrading some of your heaviest use roads, like the ones connecting residential to industrial, into 4-lane avenues, or even highways.   one of the toughest parts of the game is managing traffic, because even with unlimited cash flow, it can be difficult to get an effective MT system running.

good luck!

Streets should also be short and have limited access to those outside the immediate neighborhood. Route Query a crowded street and see if there is a way (usually by removing one or more street tiles) to force through-traffic onto nearby Roads. Or plop down bus stations as mentioned.

As the others have said, mass transit is the way to go. I use road top subway/bus stops and run them everywhere. The fares are enough to pay for the system AND make a profit. Some of my cities now have very little car traffic.

i would have to agree with the previous posts that mass transit is the way forward, bus to start with as it's cheap and fairly effective and then subways. the great thing about subways is that even rich sims will use it, so as you develop an area and it becomes R$$$ the traffic won't return like it might if you stuck with just bus routes.

the other thing to mention is the NAM, this alters the route finding of sims and so will make them use roads over streets. this allows for a more realistic traffic set up in your city. through a residential area you can have a few roads with streets coming off them, then line the roads with commerce, which actually likes to have more traffic (though not the pollution) and you can create a few more jobs whilst your also improving the local environment.

The most effective way I've found to use streets is to only have one end connected to other networks. This prevents any through traffic from using them as a "short cut" to anywhere else. Think of your networks as trees, with streets being the thinnest branches of the plant, and planning should become intuitive.
