I am posing this to see if those in the know view it as possible.

I would love to be able to select a "dataview" of my city which would identify each building by category. This would only apply to buildings that exist, not zones (unless info is somehow available here that would be helpful.. but this seems kind of like desirability) and show each building in a color depending on its TYPE.. ie.. Lt Green = R$     Md Green = R$$ Dk Green = R$$$, Lt Blue = C$, etc. (colors are only suggestions and to show what I mean)..  Industry would show IA, ID, IM and IH buildings. Service and City and Transport and Landmark and etc might also be shown? 

Is this even possible? It seems to me that the more sophisticated players seem to rely on this info a great deal.. perhaps its just me.. kind of thinking out loud.

I doubt it.

Tropod or others can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding of the dataviews is that they use view sources, which are directly coded for by the exe, which chooses what data is displayed by each view source.

So unless you can find a dataviewsource with the info you're needing, I dont think it can be added.
