this is sort of related to city building so i'll just play it safe and post it here.

I'm making this city for something.

here's a highway interchange,  4 onramps are semi-completed and I still have to make 4 more onramps that go above the top of the interchange and 2 onramps for feeder roads.  what do you think so far?

interchange2.jpg

the line below the interchange is 100 feet for distance reference.

Wow, it looks like Simcity 5, even though it is yours. Can't wait for more of it. What do I think of this? Awesome!!!

Wow, that looks fantastic! Almost real. Is this Google Sketch-It or something? I can't remember the name.

Anyway, good luck, I would love to see more!

Wow, that's amazing! What program are you using for that? As far as the project goes, it's very realistic, almost SC5 quality or something like that. Keep up the awesome work! 4.gif

Wow, that looks really nifty! I am also curious as to what program it is, it suggests Google sketchup with the Google bar at the top.

But, let's not compare to SimCity 5 yet folks. We aren't even completely sure it's under development.

program: google sketchup,  and it's completely free to.

    yeah it's huge,  I've made a 16,000 feet x 9,000 feet area in which i'm gonna build a city.

i'll go take a pic and edit it in.

    ------------------------------------------

    edit:

    vcity.jpg

    thats 16,000 x 9,000 ft    that's something like 3 x 1.7 miles.

the highways are 10 lanes, 5 each way.   and those roads are avenues and 4 lanes, 2 each way, with a center divide.

The first curve on the motorway to the left of the interchange looks extremly sharp, id belive any motorwayplanner would want to skip such a curve, since it reduces visibility to much, one can pop around the corner in 110kph and hit a que standing still 50m ahead of you, bam, masscolision.

Other than that it looks nice, cant wait for you to fill up the spaces ^^

You are going to have to work on the interchange, but this is an excellent idea.  As for the interchange, traffic can only go one way.  For example, when traveling east on the E/W highway, there is an exit to go south on the N/S higway, but not an exit to go north.

With the size that you are working with, I'm certain you can't get too detailed without making your city a life labor, but your highways visually look realistic enough. Let's hope that we see lots of non-linear street layouts.

Do you need any help in making buildings, etc? Or are you going to make your own buildings? Or are you going to download them off the Internet?

    @xiziz:

yeah it looks sharp but that's zoomed out alot in that pic.

    here's the pic up close.

    curve.jpg

***correction: I said the highway was a 10 lane, 5 each way.  I made a mistake, it's only a 8 lane, 4 each way.  you can easily see it in the pic

    @ pickled pig:

yeah the interchange needs more work, it's slow coming but coming along.

    as to the missing exits

this is a pic that's alittle old(2 more are now in the model) but answers your question:

    overpass1.jpg

    overpass2.jpg

I hope this won't be labor intensive, i'm gonna try to make this as simple as possible, no textures just colors.  like with buildings(after I finish the highways and streets and what not) i'm going to do simple mock boxes for the buildings.  then after I get the overall idea of the city into the model, then i'll start detailing it,  to about this level

    building2.jpg

    building1.jpg

as to the streets, the downtown area will be somewhat griddy( mostly griddy but with some angled intersections).  then the surrounding areas will have curved roads(much like the highway.

i'll pretty much make the whole city,  if I see a building I like then i'll put it in, and if I can't comeup with an idea for a building i'll probaly ask if I can't/dont feel like making one.

    ----------------------------------------------------

thanks to everyone who likes this so far,  it's crazy, i've only been 3d modeling for like a week or two and i'm just as amazed as the rest of you too.

Wow, this is awesome. Unless you happen to own the US Government's mainframe your computer may explode if you try to do it all in that level of detail 3.gif

suprisingly the files are not all that big, that building is only around 400kb, and the whole thing altogether is only about 2mb.

although with everything in the model it'll get huge and take alot of resources so I planned for this and cut the city up into 1000x1000 ft blocks.

hopefully this will work out okay.

Just to let you know, in your highway intersection the usual set-up for an exit ramp is the left exit on the left and the right exit on the right.

    Looking from a top-down view:

    HHHHHLR

    HHHHHLR

    HHHHHLR

    HHHHHEE

    HHHHHEE

    HHHHHEE

    HHHHHEE

    HHHHHE

    HHHHH

    HHHHH

    H=highway

    E-initial exit

L/R=division of exit into left exit and right exit (or most commonly North/South or East/West)

Yours is reversed and you can definately do it that way - it just might be a little more realistic the other way.

Other than that, what you have done is amazing. Do you have a general city plan yet? Or are you just improvising?

Damn good! I absolutely love how this is coming along, and how you've managed to do this so realistically! Looks like this is going to be an East Coast-themed city, from the looks of that building you've made already... And in incredible detail as well! Keep it up! 9.gif

    @thesonofgray.

yeah I know about that, that was an older pic.  it's been fixed.

lets just call it improvising from a general idea.  I know where I want the dt and mt and residential is going be, but I haven't planned the layouts and stuff.

    @defcon

of course east coast, we have the better cities. lol

Looking at this next batch of pictures this is going to be great. As said by Gingerblokey, your computer may be the only limit you have; even the most powerful graphics cards and the most powerful processors have their limits.

my computer isn't all that powerful, except for my processor

    my specs.

    dell dimension 3000

    3.0 ghz ht

    512mb

    80gig+250gig+8gig scsi for page filing.

my computer will slow down a bit if I use shadowing or textures but it'll do just fine in the other views.

my other limit is time,  I work from 10:00am to anywhere between 7:00pm-10:00pm. monday thru saturday.

so that only leaves about 30mins-1hour that I can do anything on my computer.

Glad you have found such a nice thing to waste countless hours of your life on. I know that feeling.3.gif

Me, it's hand drawn maps of places that don't exist, among other things.

Does playing Megaman count as wasting time? Your call.9.gif

anyways i'll post the pic when the site is back up.

This quite an impressive piece of technology at work. It seems pretty advanced. In fact, I think TXDot (the major construction company of TX) uses a similar technology to that. Still pretty cool.

    okay photobucket is back up.

    interchange3.jpg

here is what it looks like now.

all the off-ramps are drawn. it's all 2d and needs to be put into 3d.

oh also 2 feeder roads will be created as well.

    -----------------------

edit: oh and those red spots are areas where I haven't finished connecting the ramps to the highway.

This is truly an astounding piece of work and all with a free program! I am sure it is due to an astounding artist as well, Jmj. 44.gif
