Freeways with High Mast lighting
Santonel replied to Sydney Claridge's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
How is the high five coming along? Is it done? -
Wow those are some awesome buildings. I didn't know warsaw had such a skyline which is strange because i've been there (I was only 10 at the time). All I remember of warsaw and krakow are historic buildings and large squares. The only tall buildings I rememeber were in sczeczin where we stayed in a tall, modern hotel (I can't remember what it was called). I guess my memory isn't very good.

I really want to know how everyone is building these flyover ramps. I haven't really been playing sc4 much and I want to know how to get that stack interchange , the parclo and those avenue flyovers.

Well if it's not too much trouble would you mind posting some. There is a lack of Ontario highway pictures out there and I love road pics as does probably everyone in the thread. -

Yeah the term carnage alley rings a bell. It gets some crazy accidents. I once heard a rumour that during that giant pileup we had a few years back that the devil walked the earth when it happened. Now you know your highways are bad when you hear stuff like that, , lol. Sounds like Hwy 115 isnt much diffferent. Is it a freeway or just a highway with intersections and if it is a freeway why does it not have a 400 series number? I do recall a four lane section around London that had a Jersey barrier on the 401 but I havent been up there in a while so it might have been expanded to 6 lanes. At least they are supposed to be fixing up the 401 here. -

Well I think it's for cost reasons that it's left as grass. The province is strapped for cash and concrete medians cost about $1 million per kilometere. The 401 is 800 some odd kilometres long. But at least from here to Tilbury they are putting up barriers and making the freeway 6 lanes. Goodt hing too as this seems to be one of the deadlier parts of the freeway. -

Well I guess i'm for Jersy barriers too . After hearing about xiao's accident I guess that the luxury of having a grass median to expand the highway isnt worth the lives barriers could save. I live near Windsor and the 401 between here and Chatham uses grass bariers and is a death trap. -

I think large medians are smart because it makes it easy to widen the freeway when it needs expansion. Appearanlty they aren't to safe though. There is a big story on the front page of our local paper about a woman and her daughter who were killed when they hit ice on the 401 near chatham and went over the median into the other traffic direction where they got hit by a truck. Scary stuff. They are supposed to add concrete barriers in the median and expand the freeway to 6 lanes this summer from Windsor to Tilbury which is good news though. -

Well it would be smart if it didnt add an hour or two to your trip. The time it would take to go down the 402 and i94 would be longer than the time you wait in windsor. It gets very bad occasionally but there is not always a 10km backup. -

Well I have a plan. Elevate 401 over 3. Think about it. No bulding displacement and you dont have to tear out highway 3. It doesnt bring traffic to new areas and is the shortest rout to the bridge. Plus you can local traffic to hwy 3 and border traffic to hwy 401 so no interchanges are needed on 401 (the elevated section). I would put an interchange only at Ec Row Expwy (A 4 level stack sounds nice but a cloverleaf would probably be more realistic due to space constraints) so that trucks from the auto plants can get to the 401 quickly and local traffic can have a freeway link into town. Well I guess the MTO is supposed to be making 401 six lanes from Windsor to Tilbury this year. So thats good news https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/1.gif>. -

Well thats Canadian freeways for you. Beautiful wide freeways but poorly planned systems. Toronto has some amazing highways and structures but not enough of them and they are poorly laid out as opposed to cities like houston which has a spoke and loop highway system which is very efficent. Unfortunately the problem is that Canadians are not highway loving people. I live in Windsor , Ontario where the highway 401 terminates. It still exists in it's original 1950's style 4 lane configuration here and terminates onto highway 3 which is a 6 lane road that leads to the ambasador bridge (North America's busiest border crosssing). Truck lineups are HUGE here and it is so bad that sometimes residents can't back out of there driveways because trucks are lined up bumper to bumper for 10km. Yet anykind of new freeway has met hard community opposition. Everyone wants a solution to the traffic problem but no one wants it in their comunity. It disgusts me how fearful people are of progress in this city. On opposing sites http://www.huronchurchroad.com/ you can see how the highway is supposed to cause abandonment (all of the pictures of abandoned buildings are from detroit btw..) and pollution. The stupidity and ignorance of these people never ceases to amaze me. They fear these things yet ingroe the facts that new highways attract businesses and commerce and raise property value. Also cars produce more pollution while idling (which happens at intersections) than at full speed so how is a highway where cars don't stop supposed to bring more pollution? Even if this were otherwise the highway would have the same traffric volume as the road anyway so where is this extra pollution going to come from? Idiots. That was my infuriated rant for today https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/1.gif>. But the point is freeways must ALWAYS be planned with foresight. The intersate system was built before it was needed and it was well planned. Here in Canada they are built as a last resort and after they are needed. That is something that must change. -

The basket weave on the 401 and 427 are just transfer structures where the collector and express lanes weave in and out . I don't have an aereal photo but i do have one pic that is attatched because i couldt get that upload picture thing to work -

Santonel replied to simcityperron's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Good question. This would rpbably require some sort of basket weave structure like on the 401 where the top lanes would jut out from the highway allowing ramps to go between each. Im not too osure how it would work since i only thought of it a few hours ago -

http://www.texasfreeway.com/sanantonio/photos/i10_double_deck/i10_double_deck.shtml it would look something like this. Only Northbound traffic would be on top while SB bound traffic on the bottom. 6 lanes on top and 6 on lower. OR maybe even better it could be a c/d system. Both decks would have NB and SB traffic but the top would express and the bottom would be collector. so you would still have 12 lanes 3 NB express and 3 NB collector and 3 SB express and 3 SB collector. And when you think about it it is expensive but if you think even harder about it doing anything with the gardiner would be expeensive. Doing a big dig would cost billions. Entrenching it would mean demolishing the gardiner and lakeshore dr. and digging a trench and putting a new freeway in there would cost many millions. So ther is no cheap way of going about revamping the highway. -

I love the gardiner. I think elevated highways are cool and I would never say it was an eyesore. I would like to see it be double decked. The six lane Lakesohre drive underneath it should become a freeway and the existing elevated freeway should be torn down and remade with modern highway construction techniques. It wouldnt be as much affort as an underground freeway. Certainly cheaper and it would have 12 lanes. Overpasses would just go through the middle of it like i35 ( i think its i35 it could be i10) in Texas . -

Well it obviously can't widen 300%. That's why this just a report and not being built the details are still being figured out but highway 400 will be c/d in the future. They should have enough for at least 12 lanes c/d i think. It's already 10 lanes as it is. Also , I wouldnt say that Detroit has more roads but they are more concentrated into a smaller area. i75,i375,i94 and m10 all run near downtonw while in downtown only the gardener and don valley parkway run downtown.
