  1. City of EDMONTON

https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//00%201%20Edmonton%20Replies.JPG align=baseline> 1ajs : Strathcona may sound familiar if you know anything about Canada's military or Alberta's history. -Military wise Edmonton has a few different units. One being Lord Strathcona's Horse which is often placed overseas as peacekeepers. -And for Alberta's history.. Strathcona was originaly a city which is now a part of Edmonton's south side. Having the large city of Strathcona and Edmonton on either side of the river is one reason why Edmonton was named capital, and Strathcona was awarded the University of Alberta. Leaving Calgary out in the cold lol. Beebs : The one to the north of the circle on the picture your refering to is the Yellowhead bridge. And the one to the west is the Capilano bridge on Wayne Gretzky Drive. Ahaugen_05 : Thanks for your indepth reply... -The Municipal (city Center Airport) barely handles any traffic anymore. A few months ago even more local flights where diverted to the International airport. Beyond a few flights And the Champ Car Grand Prix each summer it isnt used. I am guessing personally that within 20yrs it will be redeveloped into a totally new area of the city. A mega project. this will also allow us to have buildings over 500ft. -For bats props and mods....I have released a few simple ones. And yeah I do have alot of costum content I have made. Problem isI dont know how to edit them or rename then. So technically they are other lots opened and altered. But they are handy... And as for the custom newspaper, by all means go ahead....and no need to ask me...its not my original idea....alot of CJ's use them. And like you I got the idea from somewhere else lol.
  2. Toronto

Hey just popping in to see another recreation city. I was wondering about seeing another Toronto. I'm flattered that you restarted so you can step up the accuracy. If you have any questions or need tips just catch ask on my Edmonton CJ. There are alot of things I have learned and a few steps you should take at first if your going for great accuracy. By the looks of it so far you know what your doing and then some. nice transportation mod by the way ;o).

Edmonton January 31st 2006 Edmonton reaches 1,700 replies, and 150,000 views... I spent a few hours over the last few days working on another area in the Strathcona Industrial area. Here is another small look at a very small fraction of the city.

I hope you can fix this. This is one of ST's higher rated CJ's. I have read peoples ideas on how to fix it. I also have a very simple sollution that may have been overlooked. When loading Rush Hour for the first time it resets the graphics to a lower level. When I first got Rush Hour I was wondering why at different zooms simple things like props would be missing. This really took away from how areas looked. To the point in your case where you wouldn't want to continue. Try simpley opening your graphic options and seeing if the game, lot, or mod somehow or for some reason reset it. When on lower graphic settings it duplicates your problem or is your problem. I may be way off. But.... who knows. Either way don't stop trying. This is a great CJ.

Edmonton - Quick Facts... For the readers of The City of Edmonton I want to bring more stories, news, and views on Edmonton to give everyone a true perspective of the City. I hope as this city continues to grow as a recreation, peoples knowledge of Edmonton and Alberta grow aswell. Edmonton - Calgary corridor economy leads nation : The Edmonton-Calgary corridor posted a GDP per capita of $44,000 US in 2003, a whopping 47 per cent above the Canadian average, states a new TD Economics special report. And the vaunted corridor, anchored by Calgary in the south and Alberta's capital city in the north, Edmonton, isn't just leading in Canada. Its GDP per capita is even $7,000 US higher than the American average. The report predicts strong growth to continue over the next several years. http://www.edmonton.com/portal.asp?page=1&highlightid=663 $1.7 billion U of A building boom : A combined $1.7 billion worth of construction projects are underway or will soon start at the University of Alberta. Projects include the National Institute for Nanotechnology, the Health Sciences Ambulatory Learning Centre, Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute and the LRT extension from the underground University station to the Health Sciences Station at street level. The university is a key innovation and learning asset for Alberta and Canada. http://www.edmonton.com/portal.asp?page=1&highlightid=740 Edmonton ring road takes shape : Anthony Henday Drive continued to push its way south in 2005, as two new bridges opened across the North Saskatchewan River

https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//00%201%20Edmonton%20Replies.JPG align=baseline> Inquisitor : Thanks, I'm very happy since google earth came out. When I startet the City I didn't have it or any detailed satellite maps. What a difference it is to have, and it's also much more quicker. For a while I used arial photos mainly. But now with a mix at times it helps me with accuracy even more. Greekman : It's 500,000 and then some. And to boot its all mainly housing with every second one marked historical. Remember this region is 19x20 and then with the added on areas. Even filling a portion of 1.8 million squares with houses adds up fast. Wen its finished it should be well over the Edmonton regions 1,016,000 people. And mymap is missing alot of the sarrounding communities.

Edmonton January 26th 06 After playing around with the lots editor I made another series of transit anabled lots and a set of different 1x1 grass texture lots to give dirty industrial areas a more complex feel. I also re-did the 3x3 Oil tanks I had. Originally they where simply on grass. I added short oil reetaining walls to the lots and a pipe for a little life to the lots. Also I placed them on a dirt texture aswell. Then I went into an area of the game I worked on a few months ago. I replaced some of the roads with more realistice small dirt roads and brushed up alot of detail. Note : These areas are far from finished but there worth a look now. I really want to get the eastern Refinery area filled in a little more. Here are a few pictures from a small area of Edmonton. And a google picture for comparison. https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//City%20of%20Edmonton%20jan2606.jpg align=baseline> https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Strathc1.jpg align=baseline> https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Strathc2.jpg align=baseline> https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Strathc3.jpg align=baseline> https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Strathc%20R.jpg align=baseline>
  8. City of EDMONTON

https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//00%201%20Edmonton%20Replies.JPG align=baseline> Eurytus : thanks for the link on the walls. Thats a very old picture. I have used probably 3 or 4 different versions since those ones where there. The ones you ak about are simple 1x1 texture lots. I believe those are SC4 textures aswell. You could make those in LE in probably 5minutes. And yeah I have to mark every 2nd home historical in the etire region. One thing that really takes alot of time when building it up. 1ajs : I know it sounds like a weird lot. But I need it just to add jobs to areas and not have them seen. Alot of jobs. Technicaly I have enough jobs for the city. Which is usualy half of the res. But with some areas so far apart from each other I need small hidden ones to help demands... Oreon : I know SOMY's lots are great. And I'm very thankfull to have them. But its only a handfull of lots. I showed a very small area of the refineries. After a few hundred duplicated oil tanks, and several duplicated refineries you'll see what I mean. And as for the interchanges thats exactly what I've done to many times. I may finish it and be happy. Then a month later I look at it and ask why and end up doing it all over again. The whole time I did the Henday interchange I was shaking my head lol. And I dont even have ideas how to get it to look right. I think the problem is, is that I added raised land like real life. I may have to leave it all flat then do simple NAM over passes in places where the land would slowly raise and overpass the lower road.... who knows. Should be a while before I even look at it again...

Edmonton January 25th 06 After finally getting in a few hours tonight I thaught I would show a small update. This picture gives a very small impression on how much I have done. The reason I don't show more is most of the work is spread thin and the big picture isn't quite there yet. Trying to do complex refinery areas isn't easy with Simcity4. And there isn't much for costum lots so I'll be using alot of repetitive lots to get my point across. I've done a wide range of work in eastern Edmonton on the refineries and oil related areas. I wanted to give an impression and early look of what is to come. I need to get the Industrial jobs up so I can have a better R$$ demand and keep the rest of the city growing. What I really need is a few 1x1 grass lots that proved 1000 jobs in areas like I-D CO$$ CS$$ and so on....this would help fill voids and let me really start work on areas like downtown. https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Petroleum%20Wa22.jpg align=baseline>

You'll approach it and have signs that clearly tell you what lane to be in. Switch lanes and move on... I could see it being confusing with no signs... Unholycowgod : I probably won't have any pictures of the interchange for some time. I did alot of work on it and got the roads in the right places, but there are some things I want to change. I'm far from being happy with how it looks....sorry... Lakeyboy : You should do some more work on Melbourne. Its a great city and very popular around the world. Its up to you to show it to the people. Dannato : lol, you don't say Edmonton is that far north. It is a little further south then a few European cities in Latitude. But for North America it is the most northern major city. Its also the economic gateway to the entire north including Alaska. We have colder winters then most any major city in Europe. And we get the Northern Lights on average 60 nights a year. 80% of Canada's population is with 150m of the US border. So being an 8hr drive from the border gives another feeling of the far north. Spacenuteskimo : I didn't hear about that in Fort Mac. I can see it though. A city of 70,000 that can sell a trailor to live in for $300,000 due to demand. So many people live in Edmonton then fly in or do the deadly commute up there every month. With 100billion going into the region in the next few years and a job demand of another 100,000 people a few highrises would make sence. If they build them I hope they look good. thats an ugly little town. What to do when you have Earths largest Oil deposit. CBS's 60 minutes did a special on the Alberta oil sands just the other night. The video and article is worth a view. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/01/20/60minutes/main1225184.shtml Eurytus : I would need a picture of the walls....I'm still nt sure which ones you mean.

  16. City of EDMONTON

Edmonton January 17th I've done some recent work in North East Edmonton around 66th Street ad Yellowhead trail. Also some updated work on the Anthony Henday Drive in SW Edmonton. I have to question how far on detail I should go. There are areas I could do better by raising some roads and highways a fraction of a tile for realism. I have done this in areas that are new. but to re-do other areas is very time consuming and pain staking. I always strive for this to be earths most realistic recreation but to finish it I have to draw some lines. So far trying to place even the trees acurately for 1.8million square tiles is enough lol. Here is a small update on SW Edmonton... - The Icon - These are two new buildings going up in the core of Edmonton soon. Edmonton has alot of highrises being built and slated being built in the next few years. I have announced other proved plans in the past. And I think I will be adding alot more in the future. I've shown very little out of what is being built currently. Each tower will be 30stories tall and on 104th st just west of Manulife Place. https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//TheIcon45.JPG align=baseline>

City of Edmonton Ranked no.1 ThatMonkeySim recently made a complex scale to measure City Journals on Simtropolis. I was very happy to find The City of Edmonton came in first by a huge margin. With Simtropolis having 1000's of CityJournals this was great to see. Beyond years of work if it wasn't for people views, replies, and votes for Trixies I don't think I could be where I am. Thank You to everyone who visits this City Journal. I also wanted to show one really important thing I do with SimCity every month or so. Years ago before I even started Edmonton I lost a region due to a corrupt file or two. So to keep Edmonton safe I back it up every now and then.

Inquisitor : Any city is possible on SC4. Its just how hard it is and how accurate you can do it. Just be glad St. Loius isn't in Europe. with some of there older areas and hilly terrain in parts I couldn't imagine trying some of those cities. Eurytus : I would need to know what walls you are talking about. I have used several in my city. Most all of them can be found on the STEX. Eurytus : ... - Edmontons industry is mainly manufacturing. We have some leading High Tech industries aswell as many refineries on the east end. - Edmonton has dirty industry spread out. But again beyond the refineries to the east it isnt bad. - The garbage in my cities goes to a special lot found on stex in each city lot. in real life I haven't started on the areas with the dumps. Some of our largest parks in the river valley used to be dumps at one time. Most people who live here dont believe it. Currently we have a large one on the east end of the city....should be fun trying to fill it up on the game.... - Each city tile in the game has its own utility and civic buildings. i use Rapheals 1x1 buildings to do this. then I hide them in a corner and try not to show pictures of them on here. I would like the same abilities with 1x1 green park...but no one has made them yet. - Heres the good one....why dont my houses merge....I go to every second house for hundreds of thousands of Res and mark them historical so they dont merge. I would say 90% of Edmonton is R$$. - Alot of the rich people live along the river valley and newer areas of Edmonton. Its mixed among different areas of Edmonton. - My buildings rarely go abandoned in any one of my regions. its all about balancing demands. R$$ is the hardest to fill. But aslong as I have alot of jobs...they will always grow. (These are all questions from page 55 if anyone is wondering why I am randomly saying things lol) Richiedamian : The rail maintanence yard is from SimcityScape. its an Oppie lot. I'm looking forward to your CJ. Vigozerox : No I didn't use that for the airport. I have a mod that a friend gave me for it. Justin82 : Sorry for no updates lately. you know this CJ. I can have a ton of updates then go dormant for a month. I've been pretty busy lately. And I havent been on ST much. And I havent touched SC for a while. But as always this CJ always goes on....just on a break. Thanks again to everyone for there replies....

https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//00%201%20Edmonton%20Replies.JPG align=baseline> Palmgurl, Jasperdeman.nl, Justin82 : Thank You... Quito : For the pictures at the top of each page I get alot of them from the internet. And some of them are pictures I have taken from around the city. I like to try and show people different pictures and angles of Edmonton to give people who have never been here a feeling fo the city. I am thinking of showing some of Edmontons mundane or average areas in upcoming pictures. This will show everyday Edmonton. Ajs1, Chocolatmax285, Jacqulina, Cjah, Mr Beer : Thanks for noticing the Calder Railyard. Its not finished but its getting there. It didn't help having to totaly redo everything becuase the map I was using just doesnt match up to google pictures. I'm a little if on other errors I have found on this map now. With most of them coming with rail. For anyone who knows the Calgary Trail area I have found alot of errors with the rail in that part of Edmonton. ChapmanOSU1 : Yeah once I start something I like to finsh it. Especialy when it means something to me. There are times when i surpries myself at how much work I do and how fast. Then there are other times I don't work on it for a month or so. But its always on the table. As long as I keep to my two goals... -Finish it... -Make it as accurate as I can without going crazy...
  21. City of EDMONTON

Edmonton December 15th... I've done some further work on the city center airport map. Trying to get the Calder rail yards together aswell as some industrial buildings in the area. I still have alot of work to do to get it to the accuracy I want. But heres another small update to show progress in the area along with a small google comparison.

https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//AB%201%20Edmonton%20Replies.JPG align=baseline> Eurytus : I build and level the farms over and over. I also use plopable farm props. and tree props. I use google earth to do areas accurately for the farms. I try to get the trees ditches and farm houses to look like they do in real life. I know the odds of someone reconizing how accurate it is may be slim but atleast I do. Also the comparitive pics I will have soon will show this. Beesharps : If you need any help I can give it. Just ask. I would like to see more Alberta communities pop up. No matter what the size. I hope you follow threw and make a city journal
  24. Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a cajun taste!

Very impressive updates. I like the regional views. Also the flat view looks well. I found using that with real maps is a great way to show people the effort put into the region. A few questions though... Where did you get the map of the region? What scale do you use? How did you come about it? Is it only the main roads that are recreated accurately? I'm curious because of how fast this has been made and how great this region looks. Like I have said before there is a very very small handfull of city journals I look at. And I find this one to resemble my own efforts the most. By looking at alot of your maps I now understand how some feel when looking at mine. Its great to see someone else do this level of work. At times I wish there where more CJ's like this yet at other times I like having just a few that can stand out to this level of recreation.
  25. City of EDMONTON

Edmonton Dec 14th... I don't show many updates due to not being satisfied with half finished areas. And I like to show large scale or important areas. I think in an attemp to get more updates out there for everyone to see I will show even small or mundane areas that I am satisfied or finished with. This should give people a feeling for exactly what I'm doing and what many of those areas I have built look like no matter how simple or boring they may be.... yet, as I've said before I'm trying to get the 1.8million lots on my map to resemble the real thing... not matter where. I know there are other recreations that focus on a few areas of there city. I focus on it all... In this area of the city on my recreation I'm on around year 600 in the game with the area being about 60% done. this area includes The Yellowhead freeway, calder railyard, and City center airport which has been previewed before. I had to spend a few hours fixing the rail yard which I had put many hours into a yr or two ago. Turns out the map I was using is way off the real thing. So I'm now using google earth and trying to eye it to scale. Its hard to do, due to the tracks being well over 20 tracks in width and at hard angles... so I'll try to make it resemble the real thing with in what limits I have... https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//City%20Center%20Dec%2014%2005.JPG align=baseline>
