I don't want to be bad with you but please use real population numbers. NYC metro area = 20 million Tokyo metro area = 35 million The 12 million for NYC and 16 million for Tokyo, if I am not wrong, it is the population of the most central 1500 km² but without this mention your message is wrong. -
RATP buses build before the 1990's used to have an darker green color but I live in Paris since 2002 and all the buees had the current green color. Paris transportation system
montrouge replied to doc_foualier's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
That's a long time since Doc_fouallier last message so I will show you the next. The RER is an integration of a modern city-centre subway and a pre-existing set of regional rail lines. Within the city of Paris, the RER is as an express network with multiple connections with the Paris Métro. (A B C D E) The system have about 800 million passengers per year. The RER A is one of busiest line in Europe with over 1 million passengers per day. -

If you want to impressed, see the frequency in this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUtor-DtlYw Originally posted by: Merlin of Flyote My vivid memories of the Paris Metro the first time were:- Trains with rubber tyres. Gendarmes (Policemen) with guns. I'd never seen that before. it was 1965, I was 10 and you never saw Policemen with guns in Britain. Also the old fashioned open back Paris buses.quote> In 1965, the rubber tired MP59 train in the line 1 were new. These were the newest rolling stock at this moment. Today The MP59 no longer run in the line 1 (remplaced between 1997 and 2000 by the MP89) The MP59 still run in the line 4 and 11 but are view as dirty old train. These will be remplaced soon in the line 4. There is no longer gendarme in metro but transportation policemen, RATP security agent and military for terrorism prevention. The open back buses don't run aymore. -

700,000 is a lot, it represent 14.5% of London workforce. You said that statistique about London are not incarurate but don't you believe that it is the same for every city ? It could be higher as high as 1 million but it wouldn't double London population in workday. It is Central London population that double in workday. In London you can't found stat about everything. There is stat for every month, every station. (By exemple according latest Transport for London figure I know that underground traffic decrease this year.) This is not the case in Paris where I hardly find any stat about the ridership of metro or railway stations. The only thing that England don't have is official metropolitan area unlike France or USA. Yes, home countries are include in the 12-14 million figure, as I asid before urban area has 8.5 million inhabitants. You don't need use higly oversized claim to prove that your city is great (everybody know this fact , yes I admit that london transportation is better than New York one. It offert better coverage, frequencies... The only better point of New York is the 24/7. -

The number that I use are official, yes there is many people coming form Brighton, Briston... it is less high than you believe. Don't forget that there is only 4.8 million jobs in London (Over two million in central London). If the population would really double in working day there would far more jobs. Duke87, London city proper is a large part of London metropolitan area but it don't represent the whole area. There is between 12 and 14 million people in London metropolitan area. -

700,000 people from Home countries and the rest of the urban area come in London everyday. We can also add about 300,000 tourists. (700,000 + 300,000 = 1 million) London has 7.5 million inhabitants, I don't see how the population can double. If we speak of the central part of London, it is different. Here the population double. Central London has about 1.5 million inhabitants and over 2 million jobs. -

London city proper hosts most of the urban area, it is not the case of New York. (it doesn't not even include the dense areas in New Jersey) London = 7.5 million out 8.5 million New York = 8.2 million out 18.2 million. Comparating only city proper is not always the best thing to do. -

In track length New York is larger anyway in system length London is larger. It is easy to understand this fact, New York has a lot of four tracks section when the very large majority of London is made of two track section. That's also why New York subway can be 24/7, because they can close two tracks out the four for maintenance while London couldn't. To be honest I prefer a great system 20/7 than a 24/7 system with poor maintenance. (I didn't say that it was the case for New York) Comparated at there size New York or London underground aren't very great in passenger traffic. Tokyo, Moscow, Seoul subway carry far more passengers with less mile. I agree with Dukes87 when he don't only use size for comparaison but also the number of stations and the ridership. If we compare Paris metro with Madrid metro. System length (tracks size is only used in USA) Madrid : 175 miles Paris : 133 miles Paris : 300 stations Madrid : 231 stations Paris : 4.9 million passengers per day Madrid : < 2.5 million passengers per day We can see that Madrid metro is larger in size than Paris metro but Paris metro has more station and has a far higher ridership. Anyway best don't want to say better or more used. Madrid metro look more modern, safer and is far cleaner than New York, London and Paris subway that are along the worst in the world in term of cleaness. -
I wouldn't say that paris is a very walkable city, anyway when you live or work in the dense core you walk a lot. So Parisian have less problem with overweight or obesity than other area of France. I don't have many information about health or fitness of Paris population, Paris is very diverse made of people from all around the world. Even an average figure wouldn't show the reality. What I know is the 8.7% of Paris employement are related with health (It is about 2.5 time more than tourism related jobs that include restaurant taxi...). You could imagine how huge is this sector. Anyway it is far to be the most important sector of Paris economy. Rue du Bac Welcome in the 7th arrondissement 127. 128. 129. 130. 131. 132. 133. 134. 135. 136.

Rubber tired metro is a french technology, it is also used in Mexico, Santiago, Turin. There is two type of rubber tire metro in France. -The heavy one used in Paris (1956), Lyon (1978) and Marseille (1977) mostly with driver, but two driverless line exist in Lyon and Paris. -The light driverless metro VAL used in Lille (1983), Toulouse (1993) and Rennes (2002). (First rubber tired trains of the network, those from 1956 in Paris metro are not used anymore) Anyway the majority of french metros line use steel because only 5 of 16 line of Paris metro are rubber tired and there is only 9 metro lines outside Paris and 8 of them are rubber tired.
