The "SimCity 4 Buddy" project - Version 1.1.0.19 BETA released to the STEX
CocoJones replied to Asser's topic in SC4 Modding - Open Discussion
Added an issue to Github. This is not an issue of your setup or BNL essentials, but seems to be a general bug. I get the same error when I install 1 plugin and when finished try to install another. We'll have to wait for Kaalakiota to come back from holiday for a deeper analysis. -

1. You get the same issue when unzipping the file manually in your plugin folder. That is why you should always read the included readme in the zip file (you should get a pop-up for it) to check for install instructions. If there are specific instructions, minimise the readme, continue installing the zip file and when it's finished follow the instructions. 2 & 3. This sounds more like a windows theme issue, probably changed to a high contrast theme. In vista/win7 right click on your desktop and select personalize. There you can change the theme settings and also have an option in the left bar to change cursor settings if changing theme doesn't change the cursor too. -

I can confirm folder selection works for me now Meanwhile I've found something else when trying to install plugins (both in game folder and a custom folder): I've tried installing multiple plugins, one at a time or several at once and keep getting the same error. For example: Installing plugin DK_35_BoACenterLA ( Darknite ).zip Files extracted to temporary folder. Files moved to plugin folder. Unexpected exception during plugin install: [ArgumentException] Plugin must have an id Parameter name: plugin Plugin install failed. Installation completed. 0 plugins installed successfully. 1 plugins failed installation. Please review these manually as some files may not have been removed correctly during recovery. Failed plugins: DK_35_BoACenterLA ( Darknite ).zip Log file states similar: 2013-07-30 00:03:53,678 [1] INFO NIHEI.SC4Buddy.Program Application starting 2013-07-30 00:04:08,276 [4] INFO NIHEI.SC4Buddy.Installer.PluginInstallerThread Installing plugin DK_35_BoACenterLA ( Darknite ).zip 2013-07-30 00:04:28,027 [4] ERROR NIHEI.SC4Buddy.Installer.PluginInstallerThread Installation failed System.ArgumentException: Plugin must have an id Parameter name: plugin at NIHEI.SC4Buddy.DataAccess.Plugins.PluginRegistry.Update(Plugin plugin) at NIHEI.SC4Buddy.Control.Plugins.PluginController.Update(Plugin plugin) at NIHEI.SC4Buddy.Installer.PluginInstallerThread.SavePluginInformation(Plugin plugin, IEnumerable`1 installedFiles) at NIHEI.SC4Buddy.Installer.PluginInstallerThread.Install() I get this error with every plugin I've tried so far. If I try to install another plugin afterwards the program crashes. As stated in the text above the files are extracted and moved to the plugin folder and then not removed during recovery, so technically the plugin is "installed" (and no files are missing so working)... Another thing I found is if a zip file contains an executable (most have names beginning with install to make it obvious but not all) and you try to install it, the program also crashes. I'm sorry to keep throwing them at you with all the hard work you're putting in this, but that's an alpha for you -

When I click on browse and go to the root folder, I can click on ok. It jumps back to the settings screen but leaves the field blank. Clicking ok at that point gives an error that the destination folder is invalid (because there is none). What I have to do is choose a subfolder (any subfolder really, App is just the top one so a logical choice) and click ok it fills in the field. Again clicking on ok at this point to accept the folder gives an invalid folder error. Once the subfolder is removed in the destination folder field it accepts it and it all works. Hope this all makes sense to you. If not let me know and I'll post some screen shots to illustrate. p.s.: my game is installed in folder D:\Games\SimCity 4 Deluxe so nothing too exotic. -

Yep confirm that it installs and starts up ok now Look forward to testing it later! Only one minor issue I ran into: I have my game installed on another drive and when selecting the destination folder of the game in settings I can't select the root folder via browse. However I can select the App subfolder and then edit the destination folder line by deleting \App so it points to the root again. (also tested with subfolder App left in and gives error as intended) So no biggie but thought you should be aware of this -

Cool I appreciate the effort! I'll check tomorrow evening and test the workaround if available. -

I'm getting the same error as feeroz during installation. My guess is that the remote registry process is disabled on his pc as well. For the average end user this service is more a security risk than anything else so the program shouldn't be using it. I don't know enough about .net to point to a cause but my suspicion is the auto-update push if it doesn't use the rcp service. -
Lol seriously if I get banned for telling the truth, then so be it. If you read my posts you'll see I'm not telling anyone to do something illegal, on the contrary. I said to check local laws before doing anything. Copyright has nothing to do with an NCD patch seeing it can only be used with an original game (for convenience I'm excluding pre-2k games when drm was still in its infancy). And ethics is very subjective when talking about the gaming industry. Many people don't like using original cds each time they want to play a game and risk damage. Obviously the publishers would prefer that you bought a new copy over and over, but if you had a lawful method of minimising said damage wouldn't you use it? I'm sorry if I've in any way offended an old-timer like yourself who has a lot of wisdom and knowledge to share, but when someone tells me I'm doing something illegal when I know full well I'm not I get on my horse (we don't have any moose here).
-
No disrespect but what's illegal for you isn't always illegal for me. While I don't unilaterally endorse the use of an NCD patch, if your local law states it's legal then it is until they change it. Just like an EULA isn't legally binding here because the buyer can't agree to it at the time of purchase. Other things like trademarks and copyrights are valid, so I can basically change everything about the game but am not allowed to distribute the changes or re-use code in other softs/games for the purpose of distribution (monetary gain or not is irrelevant in this case). The game publisher/developer still reserves the right to ban your online game access and account if you play online with a modified game. Bypassing local laws by forcing people to play a single player game online on their infrastructure is of course another reason (besides drm) for game publishers to move all their games online.

Yeah I know. My original cds are perfectly fine and working, I just don't like to use the cd each time I want to play the game so I ended up making a virtual cd and only use the original cds to reinstall when necessary. But I thought I'd just mention it seeing the OP might have the same problem with updating. ps the ncd patch isn't illegal here despite media lobby efforts. Not sure what the situation is for the rest of the world, but the OP could fall under either.

I got the same error trying to update version 1.1.610 with ep1 patch. In my case it was because I had previously installed the no-cd exe seeing I don't like using my original discs. As the patch recognises the file name but doesn't find the right (original) exe, it stops the update.

My city looks very monotonous
CocoJones replied to Michonder's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Ah k thanks I'll have to keep a closer eye on the details of demand when I start zoning the centre then as it could be the answer to why they (mostly) get split up at the beginning. -

Yup that's the problem I always have. I only picked sc4 back up a few months ago after not having played it since launch. As I'm still exploring ways of growing cities, I always run on normal speed and keep forgetting to change the tile settings. So in the beginning I get a lot of similar buildings (despite an already sizeable collection of extra buildings) until my penny drops. I'm guessing the extra buildings are all on 1 or 2 particular tile sets and the game never seems to be on those sets when I start building my city centre. Btw zoning particular sizes doesn't really help me either as most of them get split up. What I do now is limit the amount of zoning I do to a small area (like one small block or even one side of a block) and slowly build it out which seems to help a bit. But I am curious, after a while when the city (or town at that point) has grown quite a bit, the plots do get recombined again to make larger buildings. Is this the game just looking at demand and what's possible within the zoning area, or does it keep track of the zoning plot sizes when they were made and keep to that as a max until you upgrade the zone? -
Further evidence that SimCity has been designed for games who don't want to be able to fail.
CocoJones replied to mcallisterw's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
I'm not saying I want games to go back 40 years, I'm just explaining why they get dumbed down so much. Back then they didn't have a choice seeing there were no hard drives or even diskettes to save game progress. The problem is they're going too far in trying to please the masses to get as much money out of us. If you make a game where you click a few times, draw a few roads and then watch a video of the simulation for half an hour it might be interesting and fun, but in no way challenging. (okay I'm exaggerating now but it's just to make a point) The further you take this, the less of the original game concept will remain and you might as well call it something else (which of course they don't because a well-known name sells better).
