Sneak Peak!! Here is just a quick sneak peak to interest everyone since I don't have time for an update today. This is going to be my regional university on the outskirts of Smithfield... Let me know what you think...I'm not sure if I want to keep it or bulldoze it yet.
-
I like this idea also. I think I downloaded a set of like 10 lots elsewhere before for a huge university but I've never actually used it. I do like the look of this building, being futuristic and all... It does look like a residence hall though, rather than a class building. At least that is the first thing I thought when I saw the picture before I read the description. I like the concept though and will be following this thread til the end. Definitely something to download in the end...

Is that a custom lot you put together I have never seen it. It looks fantastic It is a lot I downloaded...I think I got it off the STEX...could be Japanese though, don't remember... :EDIT: I downloaded it of STEX here https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?mode=files&filetype=all&category=default&sortby=DatePosted&show=12&Str=crop%20duster I also see some of PEG's RDK down there at the bottom Hopefully you will show us some of that development in the future The RDK is part of a very large commercial district that houses several big name retailers as eluded to a few posts ago...you'll see it eventually...patience my good friend... Thanks for the comments...I always appreciate them... :EDIT: THIS WAS MY 100TH POST!!!! YEAH!!!!

Date: 4/25/2005 1:19:49 PM Author: Jetty Jockey A very nice presentation! I'll be keeping an eye on this one. The city shots look great, and would look even more realistic if you turned off the grid lines. quote> Thanks. Ya know, I never even considered the grid lines...I use them for terraforming but never even thought to turn them off to take the pictures...I'll have to remember that...thanks!

https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Update_9--Smithfield.gif align=baseline> Sorry for the delay with this update, my entire family has had the flu...which is ironic with this post... It had been quite a while since Smithfield was settled. Mayor Smith was happy with the small, peaceful yet bustling community he had created. This town was virtually self-sufficient, or at least progressing to that point. Alfred had not forgotten where they all had come from, and he had regular contact with Artimus to ensure smooth relations between the neighboring communities. It was a lazy Sunday afternoon and Alfred was walking through the fringes of his corn field. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught movement to his right and in a few rows. He didn't think much of it, until he realized that the wind was not blowing that day. He wondered what it could have been, but passed it off for a brave bird that ventured a little too close to human contact before being scared off. It was getting close to harvest time, and Alfred had to get back to his barn to prepare his combine for harvesting. The harvest was a particularly good one this year. The corn was plentiful, and there was even enough to sell to Tarrytowne to offset their costs. It was about two days after the corn was starting to be sold that Mayor Smith got an urgent call in his office. Sir, the townsfolk are all getting sick claimed a worried town official. How many people are sick? Alfred asked. You sound awfully excited for a small case of the flu. It can't be too terribly many people. But sir, people are lining the streets by the dozens. There must be a hundred or more people sick. Mayor Smith couldn't believe what he was hearing. He immediately dispatched some officials to survey what had happened and report back to him. Within three hours, the report came back confirming the earlier report with a few added cases. The officials also found one common thread among everyone - they had bought and eaten some of the harvested corn within the last day or so. Alfred was awestruck. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. Since Smithfield had not yet gotten big enough to warrant the construction of a hospital, he had to contact Artimus for help. Artimus immediately dispatched his best team of medical personnel. He even arranged for a team of scientists from the government to fly in to assist. Alfred rushed home. He just had to get away for a few minutes, now that his people were being taken care of. He took a hurried walk through his fields, now barren except for the remaining corn stalks. It was then that he noticed something, a small black insect crawling out of one of the corn stalks. He was appalled. He had never seen anything like it before. He rushed back to his house and grabbed a canning jar. He returned quickly to his field; it was then that he noticed that the fields were all covered with these insects and Smithfield had no way to fend them off. Alfred provided the creature to the scientists when they arrived. It was then that he determined that somehow this needed to be prevented in the future. He immediately put into action his next construction project, and within a few weeks it was complete - a brand new farm with a runway for a crop duster instead of large fields. Picture S9-1 https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Smithfield--18--Crop_Duster.jpg align=baseline> To aid in the future prevention and treatment of sickness and disease, Mayor Smith decided it was also time to go ahead and build a hospital. It was then that the Smithfield Red Cross Medical Center was constructed. He also constructed a small park surrounding the hospital to aid in the relaxation of the area to help heal the patients. ** For those interested, it is a Japanese BAT that was downloaded from a link in the Massively Huge Japanese BAT Gallery here https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=51212&forumID=37&search=1&searchstring = ** Picture S9-2 https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Smithfield--21--Red_Cross_Hospital.jpg align=baseline> Picture S9-3 (hospital close-up) https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Smithfield--22--Hospital_Closeup.jpg align=baseline> It was around this time that work on the local doggy park was finished as well. https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Update_8--Smithfield.gif align=baseline> With the town growing at a steady pace, several wealthy residents moved in to town. After much consideration as to where to build their houses, a gated community was created. This community is called South Pointe. Picture S8-1 https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Smithfield--14--Gated_Community.jpg align=baseline> With the town growing daily, a water source was also needed. To provide the freshest water possible, the mayor and board of regeants decided to erect a water tower that would not only collect rain water but also pump water from the lakes should the level in the tower get low. Picture S8-2 https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Smithfield--15--Water_Supply.jpg align=baseline> The towns people were also asking for some additional food shopping ideas, so the mayor contacted with a national food chain to build a supermarket in the commercial district. This supermarket, along with a few other choice stores, would be the anchor stores for several large strip malls. I like the round-about. Is that the founders monument in the center? Good update.

Date: 4/15/2005 3:59:26 PM Author: dhoppeii Another great update.....In the first pic, what is that building in the upper left hand corner? Looks interesting.... The monument looks great as well. quote> dhop - Thanks for the comments. I choose several different monuments of that size before I settled on that one. The others just didn't fit, both monuments I got from STEX and the original Maxis landmarks. Oh, and as for the building in the upper left corner...I'm not sure what it is. I know it is something I got off the STEX, but I don't know the name. By the time I got into the game and looked at that area, the area had become a lot more dense and that building was gone. Sorry...if I figure out what it is I'll let ya know. All - Keep the comments coming. I really do get inspiration from what you guys like and dislike. I know everybody says that but it actually is true. There should be a few updates coming today before I go to work. And maybe one or two after work (if my wife is asleep when I get home at midnight!! )

As the population of Smithfield grew, Mayor Smith liked what he was seeing. He had farms that were doing quite well for themselves, he had few problems that plagued other mayors such as traffic, crime, etc. He was finally living in the utopia that he had always dreamed. With the increase in the population, the commercial sector was beginning to flourish as well. Mayor Smith finally decided it was time for a city hall to be built to house his town's administration. Picture S7-1 There was also plenty of recreation starting to go in around the town. As an added bonus to the people under his charge, Mayor Smith arranged for a small monument to be built. He named this monument Tarrytowne Memorial Hall, honoring the people of Tarrytowne that assisted this fledgling town. With it's tall spire, resident's can climb the spiral staircase to the top and view the entire countryside from the observation deck at the top. (dhoppei - I had already placed the Coit Tower when you put it in your CJ...just a funny coincidence we both used it close in time to each other! ) Picture S7-2 https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Smithfield--13--Memorial_Tower.jpg align=baseline>

https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Update_6--Smithfield.gif align=baseline> With Smithfield growing day by day, so was the population's appetite. Many people were travelling quite some distance to buy food. Mayor Smith decided that a fresh fruits and vegetable produce stand should be set up. So, with the help of some passing Menonite's he errected a small produce stand on the west side of the main housing area. Picture S6-1 https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Smithfield--10--Roadside_Stand.jpg align=baseline> With a firm population base on which the town could grow, it was now that Mayor Smith decided that he should make a home for himself. He had been living at his farm on the outskirts of town. He chose a scenic location partially up the side of the hills where he could look out over the town. Good start. I don't remember ever reading a CJ based around the airline industry...great job.

https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Update_5--Smithfield.gif align=baseline> With time, more and more farms began to spring up. With each new farm, the irrigation system was added to and improved. Some of the farms were of average size, while still others were quite large. This seemed appropriate to the farmers who sought to provide food to Tarrytowne. Picture S5-1 https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Smithfield--7--Additional_Farms.jpg align=baseline> It was also around this time that several medium density residential plots were designated. These lots did not last long and soon there were new residents in town. Picture S5-2 https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Smithfield--8--Medium_Residential.jpg align=baseline> Several months later, as the farms were starting to flourish a mysterious sight was seen. Many trucks were seen coming into and out of town constantly. One of these strange trucks was caught on camera, only to be revealed that the truck was owned by the Coca Cola company. The truck was seen leaving the pole bean farm. I guess now everyone know what that secret ingrediant in Coca Cola is. Date: 4/13/2005 7:14:18 AM Author: jacqulina i assumed that the dark spots were where the farmers were picking the crops but love what you are doing i love farms and parksquote> Thanks for the kind works jacqulina. I have actually seen the farm fields go black before, but for another reason. If for some reason you run out of manpower to work the farms, like when it gets down to 1 worker out of 4, the field turns black. I had that happen in a town with very little traffic anywhere before.
-
Date: 4/12/2005 9:06:59 AM Author: dhoppeii Looks good aldara6166....You will need to be careful with your early farms and the amount of traffic going by them.....Too much traffic can negatively affect them. I have noticed that my stage 2 and 3 farms seem to be a little less sensitive to this though. I try to build them so that most of the residential and/or commercial traffic goes around them...Keep up the great work...quote> dhoppeii, how did the traffic affect your farms? I use the mod where I can select to increase the agricultural demand so I'm not sure if that would counteract any negativity from the traffic. Maybe I could re-route State Route 66 though...just a thought. Date: 4/12/2005 9:26:10 AM Author: sloppet very nice update.. this CJ is gettin better and better all the time!quote> Thanks for the comments. I am trying to make this CJ as interesting and realistic as possible. I'm actually considering starting another CJ with another region but I haven't decided yet. If I do I would try to tie it in to this region to keep the story going.

https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Update_4--Smithfield.gif align=baseline> At this point, some jobs were required. A small commercial district was started at the intersection of Route 66 and Route 17. This would allow travellers from outside the area to take advantage of the shops there also. Picture S4-1 https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Smithfield--5--Commercial1.jpg align=baseline> At this point, some of the farmers picked out an area on the east end of town and began searching for their farm plots. A small underground stream from the mountain lakes ran through the area. The farmers decided to line the stream and run some irrigation ditches from it to provide a constant water source for their farms. The first farms were then started - a small wheat farm and a small pole bean farm. Picture S4-2 https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Smithfield--6--1st_Farms.jpg align=baseline>

After fully exploring the area, the farmers decided that since Alfred Smith had made all of the arrangements with Artimus, he should be the mayor of Smithfield. They also decided that the other 6 farmers that were helping to start Smithfield would become the town's first Board of Commissioners. With those decisions in place, they got down to the business of building up their town. They had not liked the busy city life of Tarrytowne. They all decided that they wanted to live someplace quite and peaceful. The rolling hills, the lakes and the waterfalls all made the perfect backdrop for this community. With that, transportation was the first order of business. They decided that even though they would be their own peaceful farming community, they still needed connections to Tarrytowne and any other surrounding communities. Mayor Smith called Mayor James, and within a few days a deal was inked to build State Route 66 and State Route 17. Route 66 would cross the region from East to West, and Route 17 would cross the region fron North to South. The two would intersect on the west side of Smithfield. Once constructed, Smithfield would maintain both roads within the town boundries and the government would maintain the remaining portions. Picture S3-1 Once construction of Route 66 and Route 17 was complete, the first residential area was created. To keep with the peacefulness of the community, walkways were used in some locations instead of streets. This would certainly add to the serenity of the area and also cut down on the noise from traffic. (Thanks to dhoppei for the inspiration, even if I did use different trails ). A small elementary school was constructed within walking distance of the homes as well. Picture S3-2 https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Smithfield--4--Residential1.jpg align=baseline>

Here is another terrain pic of Smithfield. This shows the lakes and waterfalls that are located on top of the hills. These lakes feed into the river and many other ponds and streams through underground springs. The trails around the lakes are old Indian foot trails leading to the different fishing holes that were used years ago. The Indians have long since left the region, being pushed westward by the US Government over time. A testiment to the strenght of Indian engineering still stands in the two foot bridges that span the streams between the waterfalls. These are simple bridges made out of tree trunks and larger branches for railings. But, they have withstood the test of time quite well and are still sound (the PEG foot bridge is the only one available, so you have to use your imagination ) Picture S2-1 https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Smithfield--2--Ponds.jpg align=baseline>

I've actually decided to work on Smithfield before Marysville. Smithfield is located to the South-East of the mountain ranges seen in the 2nd terrain picture on Page 1. (inspiration to be taken from dhoppeii's CJ ) Several of the farmers from Tarrytowne decided that the big city life was not for them. They preferred the slow, gentle life of a small farm town. After several of them met in Alfred Smith's barn, they decided that they would find an area of gentle, rolling hills to farm. They assured Artimus that they would still provide food for Tarrytowne, and also worked out several other arrangements. With that, they set out. Several locations were viewed, but none were ever just right. After 5-weeks of searching, the perfect area was found and Smithfield was founded. I'm not sure it I'll be able to go to the Region View when I start doing the CJ part for Marysville...I don't think I took a region shot when I moved on...I'm like you, I play a few days ahead and take a ton of pictures along the way & just use what I think fits with my story line at the time... Plus, I was thinking about maybe doing simultaneous updates...basically, do a few here and there of Tarrytowne while I'm doing other towns to show that Tarrytowne is growing as a result of the region growing...haven't decided yet... :EDIT: Whoo-Hooo!! Page 3...and 69 posts total too...

aleking: Right now, there isn't alot of train traffic at all. This is because this is the only city in the region. I have played with sunken train lines before and I also have seen it played with before. The sunken lines are just the main in and out lines for the city. The lines connecting to the freight station, for example, run at ground level through the industrial district. Who cares if a factory worker see's a train roll past while he is at work, right? Once I get more towns connected through the region, I expect to see the rail traffic explode. From previous experience, based on my building style, once my region hits between 750,000 and 1,000,000 Sims my rail lines are constantly flowing with rail traffic. Usually my passenger stations are hard pressed to keep up. We'll see what happens with this CJ though. Thanks for stoppin by though. Be sure to keep checking back often because I'll soon be starting Marysville, the 2nd town in the region.

https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//Update_24.gif align=baseline> With the addition of the fire department to the city government structure, Artimus needed to appoint a fire chief. Up until this point, Artimus had been taking on this job but he was quickly seeing that it was a job too big for himself. So, Artimus searched through many resources until he came up with the name of an individual that he felt embodied the qualities needed for the position. Soon afterwards, Jeff Branigan was appointed Fire Chief. Artimus had two final additions to his public safety budget - a police department and a hospital. Charles Grey was choosen as the Police Chief and Russ Deille was choosed chief of staff for the Tarrytowne Memorial Medical Center.
