Well, sunken highways are just eye-candy... both in simcity and in real life. Pure elevated highways in large cities are an eyesore... One that quickly comes to mind, since I live in Houston, is US highway 59 through the southwest part of town (pictures from houstonfreeways.com): Before during construction current Though sunken highways also make for mighty fine rivers:

I live next to memorial park inside the loop (I-10 west & I-610), and yeah Im pretty much a highway freak (I have the houston freeways book that is now out of print), its pretty interesting stuff. I regularly drive down the katy freeway to play golf with a buddy at bear creek, so I get to be in the construction while it is happening. Its amazing how one day, the lanes will be completely on the other side of an overpass than the next. I just wish that simcity would have some sort of way to 'design' your own highway (sort of like the way roller coaster tycoon 3 was if you've ever played it). Theres nothing better than a totally out of the ordinary interchange (i.e. I-45 & I-10, well pretty much the entire I-45 and I-10 corridor downtown). I wanna be able to do that in simcity! oh well, wishfull thinking strikes again. -

Highways are amazing... maybe im just crazy, but sometimes it is just amazing to think how they can build these amazing structures without, if you think about it, that much disruption in the daily flow of traffic. They really are an amazing site to see, especially when placed in a well designed infrastructure. Houston has one of the best highway layouts in the country, with two full loops and 8 cardinal spokes (N:I-45, NW:H-290, W:I-10, SW: H-59, S:H-288, SE:I-45, E:I-10, NE:H-59), you can get pretty much anywhere in a reasonable amount of time (it is a very sprawled city). There are definitely a couple of flaws in the system (left hand onramps/exits come to mind as total traffic killers), but usually everything keeps flowing (however slow). Houston is the 4th largest city, and it was recently ranked 16th in a list of cities with the worst traffic. Not too shabby if you ask me. Anyway, all of Houston's freeways are on display at www.houstonfreeways.com, including updated pictures on all the construction around town, even the infamous katy freeway (yep... gonna be 24 lanes wide including the feeders, 4 lane feeders, 6 mainlanes, and 2 toll lanes in each direction -- in places between the beltway and 610). [schematics can be found on the katyfreeway.org website (click on 'program overview', then 'schematics')] -

I would love to see a SLR system be developed! Right now I'm making do with heavy rail and freight-blocking stations. And there are a number of threads here filled with people that are wishing for surface light rail. So I say go for it.
