Yes, set affinity to one core, and also, it seems you are really in a fix. And what was that exception report for? This wasn't apparently related to Windows Disk Defragmenter. Defraging is the best thing to do.
  9. Desktop.. Everyone has one of these!

My dad was considering dual booting Windows XP on his W7 system. He was having issues getting some of his 32 bit programs running on 64 bit. I don't really believe in having 2 operating systems. I feel if you can't get a program to run on one operating system, with some tweaking, it will work. My new computer when I get it is going to work better. It will have 4-6 GB of RAM, and after jacking the swap space to 6-8 GB that makes it all the better. On my XP system I am not going to bother trying to increase the swap space any higher then 2 GB. Mr Moose taught me a neat trick to increasing the swap to 4 GB, but I won't be using this one much longer, before I get my new system. It will probably be some time after the Holidays, which aren't far off. It will be running Windows 7, and then I will apply that trick, and then let it get used to turning up the swap 3 times higher, and maybe turn it up even higher yet. I also intend to overclock, my processor is going to be an AMD Athlon II X4 640 3.0GHz, I am going to overclock to 3.6, if possible, maybe 3.8. I doubt 4.0 would work though. Fast enough eh? I changed my desktop. This is the best image I have found so far. I will be keeping this one for awhile.
  10. Hi I recently set up an industrial district in my town to satisfy the sim's hunger for jobs. It worked allright. But these pesky freight trucks keep on driving through my city streets. First, is it possible that these freight trucks that keep rummaging my nice neighborhoods lower desirability? Also traffic on some of my roads are overcrowding due to these freight trucks. So I considered railroad. But for some reason nobody wants to use rail to haul out industrial goods, but instead they keep driving out of town! And since this industry is right in the middle of a large city tile, it is a long drive out too. Could anyone help me out with this situation? Thanks in advance.
  11. I don't want to really set up any toll booths. I love realism when it comes to the game, and the city in question is too young to have toll booths (only 9000 residents). On top of that the next town is 5 big city tiles away, so it is also in the middle of nowhere. But I will try that on my freeways in my bigger cities. I heard of the toll booth stragety and it seems like it works wonderful, although I never tried it yet. Oh and placing my freight stations in the center did work! Now everyone is going for the station to haul goods away. Thanks for the advice everyone.
  12. Inter-city train problems

I don't ever use el trains. I stick to T-RAM since I have the NAM. The only time I ever use passenger rail is in the suburbs or connecting cities. But I only use Tram if the population needs it. Usually that threshold is around 125,000 residents. Anything lower then that I use RTMT Bus stops. What I usually do in the way of busing is just randomly place stops everywhere. But when it comes to my Tram or sometimes passenter rail, I always use a layout where I have stations right in the middle of my residental sector, and then in comemrcial, then industrial. Usually I run Tram throughout my major streets all across the suburbs. My major streets seemingly are always busy and my neighborhood streets never get any wear and tear. Which is realistic. My industrial pod has some bus stops in them, but usually since my industrial sectors do get pretty big, I sometimes use the "You don't deserve it" cheat and unlock the grand rail station, and place it inside my industrial sector. Outside of that I decided to start placing some freight rail stations in there after an incident of freight trucks tearing up my nice neighborhoods, which makes for a nice looking rail station. Usually rail capacities only top out at ten, now they are at 100. But this one hundred is due to a tiny industrial sector. I would like to see the freight traffic on one of my giant industry zones. Another thing I noticed too is the freight drivers are extremely stubborn and will not use train unless you make them. As for passenger train, they are relatively easy to coax into using the train to go to work. So really the sims are cheap. They don't want to walk ten tiles to go to work, so I always have to place mass transit in my clean neighborhoods. Which is why I make a road going through there. It would be like having a bus stop on the little neighborhood street I live in. So the sims seem to go for it and drive off to the next station. As for region travel, that is tricky. I always use passenger train to connect cities. But what I do in that case is I place my city on the edge of the development on the side of the city facing the neighbor connections. If it is surrounded by neighbors that makes for a very very good regional mass transit system, and I have Tram and passenger trains everywhere. So usually if I have a downtown in the center of a giant suburban area, I run Tram through the entire thing, and sometimes I may even use the el train that sits on top of roads, which is a feature of the latest NAM version. Another thing you can do is open the TSCT (Traffic Simulator Configuration Tool) which comes with the NAM, (unless you choose not to install it) and set mass transit usage higher, and build your own traffic simulator while you are at it.

Or just use the zoom in zoom out buttons on the mayor panel.
  14. What Web Browser are you Using?

I recently reinstalled Firefox, and then changed my homepage to IGoogle. I don't need anything but the weather and date and time. Click the thumbnail to see it. The new animation on the side of this site got annoying, (the ad for Cities XL) so now FF has ABP and I blocked it. I don't know if they still have it or not.
  15. Endless CTDs

The game has many bugs in it, and sadly one of them are CTDs. It will never be fixed. But here is a good long list of what you can try. Apply the Maxis patches, all the way to build 640 Defrag and clean your hard drive (example) Run the game in compatibility or as an administrator Create a shortcut to the SC4 Executable and put this in the target control under properties: C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /c START "high priority sc4" /high "C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe\Apps\SimCity 4.exe" -w -intro:off Check for viruses or trojans Make sure your copy of the game is legal Never mess with critical SC4 files unless modding

  17. Weird Encounters

I watched Destination Truth the other day, they were looking for that huge snowman thing monster (forgot its proper name) up in Siberia. You could definately tell that was staged. The same as the one where they were looking for a vicious 3 foot tall beast in Madagascar. Or the spirits in Africa. Did ya hear that? Yeah what was that? I didn't hear anything.

I suspect you like Windows 7 better? I'm still stuck with that bland old XP. I've shown it before. Same picture of the meadow. Oh and serious widescreen? I have that LCD 1920x1080 in there that I will use with my new desktop once I build it. Right now I am stuck with this one... I think this one would be considered a netbook/notebook.

THIS TUTORIAL HAS BEEN EDITED, TO INCLUDE THE USE OF FantastiCoast. A VBScript THAT WAS USED HAS BEEN REMOVED AND REPLACED BY FantastiCoast. Hello all! I've developed a way to get real world data from Google Earth (actually the data is provided by CGIAR-CSI and appears on Google Earth with the use of a kmz plugin) and create a map. It involves the use of FantastiCoast, an application I've made, that creates an image file to use in SC4Terraformer or SC4Mapper or SC4 itself (not recommended). The results are quite good. Check out a screenshot from the greater Athens area, just as it came out from my process and not terraformed at all! Software you will need: Google Earth The SRTM Digital Elevation Data from srtm.csi.cgiar.org There is a download link in that page, named "Google Link" that downloads a file named srtm41.kmz FantastiCoast, attached at the end of this post SC4Terraformer or SC4Mapper SimCity 4 Steps to make your map: 1. Open Google Earth by booting SRTM Data After you download srtm41.kmz (41 means version 4.1, it will probably be updated sometime...), save it in a folder and double click it. It will open Google Earth, with SRTM data loaded. Enable the place in the sidebar and you will see the results on the map 2. Locate the area you want and download the data you need I will use the area of Athens that you see in the beginning of this tutorial. So, click on the green icon of the tile you are interested in. If you need data from more tiles, read further. Then, click on the link and watch the results Next, enable the Data checkbox in the sidebar, inside elevation preview --> Global legend and you will see the links for the data of the subtiles enabled By clicking on the square icon next to the the "Data" label, you can download the precious data! It is an .asc file. For my example, I used the data from 4 subtiles, because the area I wanted was in the middle of them. So, I downloaded srtm_41_05_4_3.asc, srtm_41_05_4_4.asc, srtm_41_05_5_3.asc and srtm_41_05_5_4.asc *** As I mentioned earlier, if you need data from subtiles of 2 different tiles, go get them! Now you know how. You can now close Google Earth. There is one extra optional step which is not covered by this tutorial: Using DEM data in a GIS application (ie Global Mapper) to get a correct scale. Look at the end of this post for further details. 3. Use FantastiCoast to create the bitmaps Go to the end of this post, download and install FantastiCoast. * You need Microsoft's .NET Framework 4 to run FantastiCoast ... You can read usage instruction for FantastiCoast here In short, open the .asc file and click "Launch". Then save the file as bmp or png or 16bit png. It is ready for SC4Terraformer or SC4Mapper! If you downloaded more than one file, repeat for the rest. You can see a downsized sample (originals are 4,11MB, 1200x1200 pixels): *** Do not forget: SC4Terraformer and SC4Mapper, just like SC4, need bitmaps of a specific size (64 pixels per km + 1 pixel, ie 1025x1025 for 16x16 km). You will get better results if you crop and stitch them instead of resizing them before using them in SC4T/SC4M/SC4. Do not let SC4T/SC4M resize the picture because the terrain will look very spikey. Ok, I guess experienced map makers know what to do next... However, I continue the tutorial, just in case you need more help. 4. [optional] Stitch the bitmaps, in case you need data from more than one Using a picture editor, you can stitch the pictures made by the script. For those who wonder, NO, they are not distorted, you can stitch them just by placing them one next to another. Here is an example of a 2400x2400 picture 5. Crop the final picture Now we have a bigger picture which contains the area we wanted. After we stitch the pictures, we have to crop the final picture to the size we need (1025x1025 pixels is the standard for a 16x16 map). The rule is 64 pixels * mapsize + 1 so for a mapsize of 16x16 km we need a 1025x1025 picture and for a mapsize of 16x32 we need a 1025x2049 etc. Of course you can also resize instead of cropping but remember: Resizing always results in some kind of distortion, so you would better avoid it as much as possible. If you have to do it, do it only once and remember that you will probably have to Equalize the map in SC4T, in order to reduce some spikes you will get from the distortion. So, after cropping my final picture to a 1025x1025 bitmap (I don't thing you need a screenshot for this), I am ready to go with SC4T. 6. Use SC4Terraformer or SC4Mapper I have only used SC4T because I have some installation problem with SC4M. However, there is no big difference. Open SC4T, choose a Region you have created in the game for your new map, and click "Import image" under "Global tools". Pick your final image, click OK and them RGB and... voila! You have your new map, ready to play! ...well, almost! Sometimes you might need to use "Equalize" just once, because the map will look a bit spikey. Judge by your own. After saving, you can open the tiles one by one in the game (DO NOT USE RECONCILE!) and "save and exit to region", to render the map correctly. 7. Some finishing you have to do The satellite data does not distinguish water masses such as rivers and lakes. You will have to create them on your own. Usually, they are visible as flat areas (lakes) and banks (rivers). --- The scaling problem --- - SRTM Digital Elevation Data has 90m precision. It is not bad, but it is much less data than the supposed size of the maps you create. Actually, your final map is downscaled by 16:90, meaning it is about 5 times shrinked. In my map, an area of approx 90x90 km, was turned into a map of 16x16. There are solutions, one of which is approached by MallowTheCloud in his "Making Accurate-Scale Real-World Maps" tutorial. I will try to write a complete tutorial on the whole process soon. Another solution of course, would be to resize the picture, regardless of the reduced precision. Try it, it might not be too bad... I hope you find this tutorial useful and you enjoy your new maps! xentrix PS: I'd love to see some screenshots of any map you might create by this method, especially if you find anything weird with FantastiCoast. Thanks in advance! (This was a mapping tutorial from the mapping section on ST that I wanted to paste on an html doc)

The detail is nice, however it still needs to be bigger. I usually make my fantasy maps in 5x5 or 6x6. However most real life maps hit the 15x15 mark. But I do like the design.
