  1. Thanks, I actually have that installed. I'm just having problems meeting demands on industries. Demand for Manufacturing and Hi-Tech. Trying to get Manufacturing demand to lower first so I can increase the tax on it when the demand becomes lower. Since Manufacturing loves to pop up on zones I make mainly for Hi-Tech and I end up destroying manufacturing that spawns there. Currently making another city near it too so It'll hopefully take some of the burden.
  2. Cool thanks! I'll get right on it then. It would be easier for me to start a new city than figure out how I can meet both demands for hi-tech and manufacturing industries because whenever I try to put zones that hi-tech industries desires, I always get Manufacturing setting up shop there. Can't increase taxes either because I want the demands to stay the way they are, as high as possible since I don't want to get that "stuck in a rut" problem where there's no demand for everything and that's a bigger problem than just the no job icon and abandoned buildings. Plus I'm a bit excited making another city near it. Should be easier this time around since I can connect it right away near my current city so making progress with it should be easier. Plus this time around, I'll make sure to make room for highways to avoid destroying lots of zones when it's decently developed. It can go either way too when I have to make highways for my current city. I'll be destroying lots of commercial and industrial zones so I should have no problem destroying them if the neighbor city has lots of them so my sims can temporary get jobs there until the highway is fully functional and the destroyed zones are replaced.
  3. Thanks, that seems to make sense. Now looking at my city, I have high demand for r$ and r$$ than r$$$. But the thing is, I keep putting lots of manufacturing and hi-tech jobs so that should help. Though, I haven't been able to lower the hi-tech and manufacturing demands yet no matter how many industrial zones I put in. Even if I've increased the taxes on dirty industries. Their demands are through the roof and by roof, I mean past the line at the very top while on dirty industries, I have very few demand. This is really good news for me. So it has nothing to do with the roads I have. My city is alone at the moment. No cities around it. Do you think it'll help alot if I start a city near it?
  4. Hello Everyone, First of all, belated Merry Christmas! I currently got to 400k population and still have high demands for all 3 zones that I can't seem to meet. I suddenly started getting the no jobs icon on lots of buildings. The wierd thing is, this only happens on the residential zones near the dirty industries. There's no problem in pollution since I made sure they're far enough when I've put them there. They won't let me query on where they work also after they get the no job icon. The commute time is always long and that's also the reason when they get abandoned. I have nam with simulator Z medium installed. The no job signs only happens on the residentials in the middle of the map I built near the dirty industrial. I divided my city into the E and W side. East are mainly Residential, commercial and hi-tech industries while the west side are power plants, dirty and manufacturing industries. The commutes are long on the buildings that get the no job sign. I have lots of residential on the East side and I have no problem with them. The commute times are short and I very rarely get a no job icon on the buildings over there. I've queried some of the buildings there and lots of them go to work halfway through the map and their commute time is still short. The residential that I'm having problems with are in near the middle of the map, near the industrial side so it's abit impossible to get the long commute problem considering the houses on the East side have a long way to travel and their commute times are still considered short. But when I check them after they get the no job sign, it would say that the commute time is longI don't know what to do. Is it because I'm not able to meet the commercial and industry demands? I'm slowly getting the demand for dirty industries but there's still lots of demand for Manufacture and Hi-tech industries. I seem to get the problems on high and medium wealth buildings mostly. I'm almost broke now. i have 2k money on the reserves and I get 1k profit per month. I had around 2-3mil but they were all spent building bus and subway stations. I had problem with congestions and traffic but after I installed bus and subway stations on every corner, that helped with the congestion problems. But this didn't help one bit on the long commute times and no job icons I'm having. I don't have highways yet since my map is already mostly populated and whenever I try to put highways, zones get destroyed and messes me up quite badly where I lose alot of money and population. Also, abandoned buildings, if I leave them as they are, will they get repopulated over time? I'm seeing alot of high and medium wealth buildings abandoned due to this problem. Am I better off destroying the buildings to make way for new construction? I do this but it also takes time for those areas I destroy to get replaced.
  5. Question about reducing pollution

    Thanks! Yeah, I'm surprised, I'm currently earning 30k a month! T_T I currently have around 2.3 mil in reserves. Taxes are actually low, around 7-8% and at least most of the residential zones have high score on school and hospital and crime is low. Everything is adequate. Speaking of residential zones, does having access to schools and hospital affect who lives there? I seem to be having problem meeting demand for low wealth and medium wealth residents. Or it doesn't matter? I figured if there's a good school and hospital access in an area, the sims living there would have good education and can work towards being high wealth than those who didn't have access to school and hospital? Also, how come when i build lots for zones, most of the time, the no road sign would appear on one or all the lots even though, there's one in front where they're facing. Most of the time, the no road access sign would disappear after something is built there, but sometimes, it would never disappear and after a couple of months, the sign would be replaced with the no job sign with long commute and after a month or so, it would go abandoned due to long commute. The buildings nearby will have a short commute though when I query. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? I make sure that when I build zones, they're facing a road or street..
  6. Question about reducing pollution

    Thank you so much everyone. I'm currently getting near the 400k population mark and i still have high demand for all 3 zones. It's great to know. I'll just do the wall of trees then since I can just imagine how much it would cost to use parks and gardens and the monthly cost. I have to plant them early I believe because it takes time for them to grow right? I will try to make manufacturing to appear near the merge so that they won't have that real high red pollution. Thank you so much again everyone.
  7. Hello Everyone, My population is going to the 300k now and I still have lots of high demands for all 3 zones. I have divided my city into 2, the east side is mainly Residential, Hi Tech Industry and Commercial while the west side is all dirty, coal plants and manufacturing industries and in the middle is an airport. My question is, the 2 sides are about to merge on the middle. It would be a bit hard to merge them because of the tons of pollution the dirty and manufacturing makes because even though they are far away, they're still able to pollute alot of the space near them. My question is, before I go about destroying the airport in the middle and some commercial and hi-tech industry, is it going to be effective on stopping the pollution if I put tons of medium parks and tons of trees in the middle going straight from N to S? I figured about 12 tiles thick straight down the middle? I figured it would serve as a wall against the pollution and stop it from getting to the other side when they both get near each other? Plan would be only a highway or 2 and a couple avenues will be connecting the sides while the middle will be trees. Will this be effective? or is the heavy pollution still going to affect the nearby zones? Thank you in advance for all your help and time.
  8. Thank you so much for that. I just recently started using the Nam parts as you suggested. The only parts that seems to give me the CTD problem are the "elevated rails on roads" parts. The other pieces doesn't give me any problem though I haven't tried and used some of the parts. Also, is it normal for the Nam parts to make cars disappear when they're passing through those parts? I'm talking about the underground roads or roads/streets/avenues that are under another road/streets/avenues. The cars going to the nam parts always disappear. Is this normal or does that mean I'm doing something wrong? I'm on Medium settings btw, the game is faster on medium than it is on high just as you adviced. I'm planning on downloading some custom buildings on this site and before I download stuff, are there any packages I can download? I mean instead of downloading buildings one at a time, is there a package that makes you download lots of building all at once? This would be extremely helpful. I don't care for what types of buildings the package has, as long as it has lots of variety on it. If not, then I have no problem downloading one building at a time. I just thought it would be faster and easier to download if the packages exists. Again, thank you so much for your help guys. I'm really learning alot about the game here. ;
  9. I bought the sim city box so sim city 4 deluxe is there. Originally posted by: SC4BOY Astro did a nice job, but I have a few additions SC4 has a bug that will, after that "hospital funding" message will send you to the wrong hospital. When you get the message there will be one that needs more funding, but not the one you get if you click the link. I have no idea the conditions where this happens, but it is frequent to me. I can place added hospitals and they do share the load.. Unless you have BOTH hospitals overloaded, this should work fine. Perhaps you are using some custom lot that is wrong? quote> That might be it, I'll just have to keep checking each hospital then whenever I keep getting the bug. I have not used any custom civic services. I've only been using the "road top mass transit mod." Thanks. You cannot "force demand" with taxes very well.. only slow it. To replace dirty you both need DEMAND for higher levels AND discourage dirty (with taxes) AND you must have the environment/conditions to grow the new... ie low pollution, sometimes police/fire protection, higher land values, etc. You simply have to work your way out of this not CRASH THROUGH it. quote> I know about this. Whenever I get a demand for manufacture and Hightech, I want to replace dirty high poluted industries with them. That's where I dezone the dirty high polluted industries and try to put in the high tech or clean manufacturing ones. Putting in parks like Astro advices helps spawn the high tech industries on that section and same for the commercial and residential. I have to be careful though and be fast about it since it seems to make those industries go abandoned due to low desirability if I don' replace the nearby dirty high polluting industries right away. But putting trees as temporary buffer between zones seems to help them live longer until I have high demand for manufacture and high tech industries again. You must use the connection pieces that are part of the NAM. I suggest you do a bit of checking for tutorials on building your transportation connections.quote> I try to avoid using the Nam parts since I seem to get a crash to desktop whenever I use the parts, though I've only tried some of them but they kept giving me the crash to desktop. It seems it was a bug that couldn't be fixed and it happens when I hover to another mass transit part while trying to use or position the nam parts. Thing is, I have to hover to them to connect them. Are there any fixes made for this? I really wanted to use the elevated on roads parts but I couldn't since I always get the ctd problem a few minutes after using them. And saving alot when using the nam parts doesn't help one bit since saving for some reason takes like 3-5 minutes? Is the saving time normal? Whenever I save, it takes around 3-5 minutes to save. Riots are caused by not supplying adequate BASIC support. Normally to end them you will have to summon police or if you have none, you must plop stations to get police to the problem. To get riots you must have VERY BAD cites (mayor rating of negative 50 as I recall) quote> I wasn't talking about riots. You must have thought I meant riot when I used the word rut? By rut, I mean no changes or stuck. The tried and true methods ALWAYS work to get you out of trouble. You may simply need to learn what they are. Generall population drives demand drives transport needs and back in a circle. Learning what these are and how to apply them is actually the jist of the game mechanics.. they rest is pretty much "eye candy" There also is a "beginners" thread somewhere that is specifically designed to get you through the basics of installing, building and etc basic cities.. don't neglect the tutorials in the game as well. Oh and I don't recall you saying, but you need to have either SC4 Deluxe or SC4+ Rushhour to get things to work and you must apply the basic EA patches from the web site after installing to get to version 640 before some of the game features will work. quote> The omnibus thread that Astro recommended is helping me tons. I learned how to use the desirability map and find out where each demand wants to set up their services on the map to maximize them. Also, I did the dos operation thing to make vista, simcity 4, intel dual cores run together perfectly. Not sure what it does or if there was any difference though. Finally, are there any mods you guys recommend that would help make the game run smoother or improve the game? I'm talking about mods like nam or the road top mods or mods that improve the ai of the game or for instance, a mod that automatically and randomly makes a disaster happen like in sim city 3000 or a mod that makes it run smoother by simplifying the coding etc? Also, is there any way to make my sims automatically put out fire without me having to manually dispatch the fire truck? I kinda gets annoying when I'm trying to fix a certain part of the city and I would just suddenly get interrupted and forced to go to the scene with the fire while putting up a road. Also, I have no custom building models yet. Thank you so much for all the replies. You guys are really helpful.
  10. Thank you so much for answering my questions! I know it was alot of questions. I really appreciate it.
  11. I apologize in advance for this long post. I have so many questions that I need answered. Thank you in advance for your consideration and time. Hello Everyone, I just purchased the sim city box about last week and I'm loving Simcity 4 alot. I'm beginning to think it's alot easier than Simcity 3000? In Simcity 3000, I can never get my city to go over 30k population without going bankrupt, but here, I'm easily able to get up my population to 100,000 and have 1mil money on my pocket. Firstly, aside from the manual, is there a topic or site I can go to that explains all the basic stuff I need to know? I did every tutorial in the game and I downloaded and read the manual. Also, I have Nam and RSVT mod (one that puts bus stops and subways on sides of road without taking a tile space) installed. One thing I don't get is the difference between light, medium and dense versions of zones. I know the basic of what they mean but do they affect which class spawns on each zone? For instance, if i build a light residential zone, would I get mostly low wealth residents and if I build dense residential, I get mostly high wealth residents? Same thing for the industrial and commercial zones. I don't know which zone to use for when I'm trying to meet a demand. If I have demand for low wealth citizens, which zone is best to use for residential? What about if I want low wealth commercial services or medium wealth offices? or it doesn't matter? What matters is the tax? Also, can anyone please explain which sims low/medium/wealth is best for which job? For instance, which sims can benefit the most for high tech jobs? For dirty/manufacturing? or work at a low/medium/high wealth commercial office? This seems to be the most problem in my commute time because I can see my sims commuting to jobs on the other side of the city even though there's lots of industrial and commercial jobs really near them. Also, when trying to use the transit parts that came with the nam mod, especially the elevated rail on road pieces, my game always crashes to desktop when trying to piece those nam specific parts. I read it's was a bug they couldn't fix and it's caused when you put your cursor near another mass transit spot? Also, I also get confused with the RCI demand meter. How do I read it? Is it the higher the bar the more demand it needs or is it the other way around? If the bar is on the lower negative side, does that mean I have no demand for that building? I used to think the higher the bar, the less demand it is but I'm confused. I have other things I can't understand too. For instance, I still get a complaint from sims about a certain hospital funding even though when I query that same hospital it seems to meet the necessary funding. For example, a hospital that can hold a max 3000 patient at max and it currently has 2500 patients on it, I would still get the complaint on that hospital about low funding. I even put a clinic right near beside it but it doesn't help take the load off either. I always get into the same snag. Especially the commute time. I have the Nam mod installed. I've searched everywhere on how to fix it and even installed Road top mod transit mods to put bus stops on every corner and it still wouldn't fix the problem. On my 250k+ population city, before getting fed up and blowing it up to start over, I had so many abandoned buildings. I had bus stops on every corner. The reason is long commute time. I just got into this forum and read a few topics. It seems that when you install the nam, you're able to choose which traffic controller you can use to fix this. Thing was, I did just the recommended settings when I installed it. So before I decided to post this topic, I reinstalled Nam andI chose Simulator Z medium. is there a better one you guys recommend? Also, when I try to replace dirty industries on a zone on a certain part of the city with high tech or manifacturing with low polution, I can't seem to do it. Same for commercial and residential. I know about increasing the taxes to 20 for the zones you want to remove and decreasing for the zones you want to move in. I do that but when I reinput the zones to make way for the industries I want to prosper, nothing happens on that zone. Is it because of the pollutions nearby? If so, how can I slowly change the dirty, high polluting industry without removing the whole high polluting zones at the same time? Finally, are highways only straight? Can I connect 2 highways, one going directly north to south and the other directly west to east? Same for connecting them to avenues. Also, I seem to get that stuck in a rut problem and it's happening to my latest city right now. Are there any proven ways to get out of the rut? I mean by rut is when my rci demand never changes and the only big demand is agriculture.
