Because more than half of the postings in the GLR thread are about support questions, I opened a separate thread for support. The MOD can be downloaded here: Before asking, look if you can find the answer in the FAQ: How has the GLR MOD to be installed and what is required? At first you have installed all the updates provided by Maxis. Then you need to install the Network Addon Mod in it's latest version. You'll find it on the GLR homepage. Then, you can use the GLR MOD. Unzip it and put the folder into the ModFiles folder of the NAM. How can I use translations? Download a translation file and unzip it! Move the DAT file inside there into the GLR folder. It is an additional file and no replacement for the GLR MOD. Stations are not UDI compatible and I can't see any trains passing it. You need to drag an elevated railway track through the lot. Then it works. The game crashes often when I try to place puzzle pieces. There is a bug in SimCity. Prevent the mouse cursor from hovering it over station lots (including bus stops and railway stations) and save your city before placing glr pieces! I cannot find the GLR menu or it's empty Either you use the wrong NAM version or you placed the GLR mod into the wrong directory. You have to look for the puzzle pieces in the misc networks menu beyond the button for the double decker puzzle pieces. You'll find it in the first quarter of the menu contents. how to build bridges and connections to other cities It is not and won't be possible to build water bridges or connections to other cities using puzzle piece. To build bridges or connections to other cities, you have to connect elevated rail tracks using the el-to-ground puzzle piece. can I use newer NAM versions than the recommended version on the homepage? The GLR MOD itself works with newer NAM versions but you will only have access to the puzzle pieces of the previous NAM version while there is no update for the GLR. When will the GLR MOD be integrated into the NAM? Is there any responsible person here we can ask for an inclusion? We don't know how to contact the maintainers of the latest NAM versions. While long-gone NAM developers came back to ST, the developers of the latest version are still unreachable. How much work is it the include a new puzzle piece? If you can give a texture for a new puzzle piece to us, it is less than five minutes of work. If you want to create textures, they have optically to fit with the others. I see boxes instead of signals when placing street crossings There is a small bug on the ALPHA 3 which will be fixed in ALPHA 4 again. Everything works fine if you don't place the crossing pieces in ZOOM size 3.

The Capital of the World!
GoaSkin replied to spacenuteskimo's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
I think, the capital of the world should be established bethween the continents, for example it could be on one island of the Azores or the island Tristan or Bermuda. It should become independant and only have the function to be the capital of the world. -

Mexico legalizes small drug possession

For spain, a legalization with legal production would be the best thing they can do in the point of Spain. Marocco is beside of Spain and produces huge amounts of Marijuana, sold on the black market in all over europe but smuggled to Spain at first. There is a very secure border production and most people are catched when smuggling but even if less than 1% of all the smugglers have success, it is enough for them. The drug cartels have hundreds of the drug amounts europe ever needs and many people to throw into the fire. They are willed to smuggle even if they are catched because the cartels promise more money than they can ever earn in two years. And if they're arrested, the small money they can earn in the european prisons for work is enough for their families to live meanwhile. Only a takeover of the market can stop this. If consumers have access to drugs, this may not always be a problem. It is the task of schools and other educational and social institutions to prevent drug abuse - and of course always to explain the people who would not stop taking drugs how to use them safer and avoid addictions and other problems. Criminalization and possible punishments are a very weak argument to stop taking drugs. -

I think the Mexicans decriminalized minor possession because the police shall concentrate their work on fighting the organized crime that does not deal with small amounts. If the police has to waste the time with drug consumers, they have less time to fight the cartels. Instead of catching small fishes they can concentrate on catching big ones now. By the way in the most european countries there is no punishment for the possession of small amounts of drugs. It is still illegal and if the police catches someone, they have to confiscate it. But if someone isn't catched every few months, nothing more happens. In the netherlands, there are some shops with a license to sell marijuana legally. For some years that was possible in switzerland too. In spain and the czech republic there are big lobbies for drug legalization and also politicans that want to legalize it. -

Just tolerating small amounts has no effects on the amounts of drugs that go into the USA. It is still illegal to own big amounts and it is still illegal to take drugs through the borders. And on the borders, there is a big risk to be checked. What shall happen? That the people prefer to smuggle 5g marijuana through the borders and cross it the whole day instead of taking a kilo with them only because they are legally then in Mexico? That is ridiculous and stupid. If someone crosses a border in small intervals, he will be checked clearly. It is still easier and safer to be illegal in Mexico too by carrying a big amount across the border instead of starting an ant-traffic. -

At first, everyone has privacy rights. Neither the people nor the politicans are willing to allow the police to treat everyone like a criminal. Secondly, the police and other institution have lots of things to do. All of them cost much money - taxes. That limits the things what these organisations may do also. So they have to set priorities. And it is more important to invest the tax-money and all the other resources to fight terrorism and to catch murderers than to invest much time to punish drug users. The mandate of the police is to solve real and visible drug problems. To guarantee the security on the streets where drug abusers (may) disturb the public order and to avoid related crimes (like robberies by drug-addictives). Furthermore, every prisoner costs a lot of money. Around 170 -

I think any drug must be decriminalized everywhere including a restricted possibility for legal purchase. But drug consumtion must not be made easier and more attractive when reforming the drug laws. A method may be that drug consumers must visit seminars and write an examn about safer drug use and get a license to buy small amounts of drugs legally after that. If the license holders are doing bad things on drugs (for example driving cars) or are caught when owning big amounts of drugs, the license may be cancelled beside other penalties. Drugs should be sold by social institutions/ welfare organisations - not making profits with the drugs they sell but financed like any other social institution too. Cannabis should be sold in cafes like the dutch coffeeshops (but holded by the red cross, the caritas or similar institutions), Heroin in therapy institutions to addictive people only. No institution should sell different drugs. But if the black market shall die, everything must be availlable legally somehow. Otherwise there are reasons to buy from the black market. -

@Glenni: Can you please render a 1x1 version of your castle gate tunnel entrance with all props and the base texture as part of the model itself (no props) and customized lodding and at least rectangular and closed on it's backside? I want to add new tunnel entrance skins to the NAM tool.

GLR and EL-rail are the same automata. The subway system isn't. The subway implemention in SC4 is based on a different instruction than all the other networks. While all network use SC4PATHs to find destinations, simulate traffic and show vehicles, the subway system only uses paths to illustrate vehicles on the open tiles in the underground view. The closed tiles do not have any paths. The commute is simulated with different procedures. Swamper77 tried once to get the subway automata into overground. Creating subway tiles that are not for underground mode let the game crash. If creating other network tiles with vehicle-ID 4 paths you see subway trains moving in overground but they are always green like if UDI'ing through mountains.

Since september, I am developing a tool to configure the NAM. Using a dialog, a lot of settings can be customized easily. Many NAM plugins like Traffic and Automata Simulators aren't necessary anymore. The dialog allows an easy selection of their features. The tool allows to individualize some things that aren't customizable normally: - the skin of tunnel entrances - the maximum number of displayed vehicles, pedestrians, ships and planes - the minimum and maximum number of train cars - by setting capacities per car the total number of passenger trains and busses Before a public download can be made, the tool needs to be tested well. Beside testers, I am still looking for translators to foreign language. The tool actually supports english, german, spanish, dutch and chinese. The link below offers the Windows version. I will compile a Mac or Linux version as soon as requested. http://www.yousendit.com/download/WnBRSU5La0R0NjlMWEE9PQ The tool requires the January 2009 version of the NAM. It is not compatible to older versions. Some files must be removed. You are asked for that when running the first time.

The various builds of the Windows versions of SC4RH have version numbers. Version 1.1.613 was the first public release. Later, there came two updates, updating the program to versions 1.1.638 and 1.1.640. To find out the version number of the ASPYR port, you need to dive into the package contents of the app and look into the Info.plist file. It says as version number 1.1.517. That means the fork that has been used to make a Mac port is based on a developer release of the program that wasn't used as public release and is a much older. The version number also may identify an unstable version (last number is uneven and this mostly defines unstable versions, for example on Linux kernels). That explains why Aspyr never ported the Maxis updates. They aren't usable to be applied on the version that Aspyr sells. If the Mac port is really based on an unstable release, it may not be legal to sell it due consumer protection reasons.

If running SC4 makes problems, you should try out Parameters when running the EXE. Toggle bethween the hardware and software graphics driver if you have problems with the graphics. If you do not use hardware acceleration, the game does not become much slower. If the game breaks three seconds after showing the region map, there is a problem with the audio driver run the game with the option -audio:off then!)

Sometimes, CIDER or simply the free version 'WINE' to run a Windows-version of a game is a faster and more stable solution than a port. On the Macintosh platform, WINE yet does not have the same functionality than the Linux-version but on Linux, sometimes I ask myself why some games have been ported. For example, the Cultures2 part "Northland" is availlable as native Linux version but not the other parts. But you can run all of them using WINE. I bought the native version of Northland and the Windows version of "8th Wonder of the World". Through WINE, everything is faster and more usable. So I ask myself why they were doing the porting work. Sim City 4 deluxe runs well under Linux if WINE is configured well (DX and Audio must be set up well). Same performance and stability like the Windows version with no restrictions. You can use all the Maxis updates and it is not necessary (like explained in many documentations) to install a cracked EXE. WINE is usable for safedisc copy protection.
