The new Sim City 4 Expansion pack
dpk replied to kikicounter's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
That urbsurbis.com page seems to require you to log in to view what's going on with the new game idea, FWIW. -
Did y'all see my response to another thread about this? If not, here's the summary: To fix this, I just clicked download, and let Firefox resume where it left off. Repeat that until the filesize on your computer is the filesize on the site. Then it should open. One thing to note: Each subsequent download will have a new filename, ending with (1) or (2) or so on. So you may end up with a lot of files. This points to either a transparent proxy issue (I have Comcast), some other internet issue, or the server aborting downloads prematurely for another reason. Cable modem (dunno speed) Not using PPPoE, just regular ol NAT Comcast Windows XP SP2 Firefox 2.0.0.4, and yes, if you mean does it automatically go to save when I left-click a file This was mid-day, PDT I don't have Java enabled.

Firefox 2.0.0.4 here. The problem appears to be that the server is aborting the downloads prematurely (I just got about 4MB out of 10.1MB). Firefox is not reporting this fact, for some reason unfathomable to me at the moment. I started the download again, without deleting the corrupted file, and it started where it left off. However, Firefox (for some additionally unfathomable reason) silently adds (2) or (3) or whatever to the name, so you'd have to open that file instead. Isn't open source the best? Heh.

Garbage gets my vote as well. It's a silent killer, until it is a significant problem.

I haven't seen the STEX CD 1, so I don't know if this is already the case. I'm wondering if the STEX CD 2, which I read might be in production?, includes a .exe installer that lets you choose what to install? The zip downloads from the site often contain nested directories and stuff, which I'm not sure even works in SC4. I'm basically wondering if the CD comes with a tool that helps manage the installation/uninstallation of the components? Even if SC4 supports the directory structures, I think it'd be useful.

Converting SC4 screens from PNG to JPG
dpk replied to SpecialEddie's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Paintshop Pro, which has a free trial, has a feature which will do batch conversions (among other things). Personally, I think it's great that SC4 saves in PNG, so I can choose how much I want to compress the image after the fact. Who knows what it would choose for compression, or how badly JPG would mangle whatever part of the image I'm trying to showcase (as in crop). -
Something wrong I see with the SCJU
dpk replied to jmjselect's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
I don't think I understand. How do these laws change how you play the game? The only one I sort of "get" so far is euthanasia: I've had to "euthanize" various residents when I bulldoze their property without notifying them ahead of time. -

Not according to the EULA (most unfortunately). 3 2 1 make thread close now.</simpsons>

newbie but over 50hrs real time already
dpk replied to MothBaller's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
My city of now 520k profits around 3-4k/month. For a long time it was losing that much each month. I turned things around by reducing my school bus funding and ambulance funding significantly, and increased the number of schools and hospitals. If you think about it, the school busses and ambulances do not provide any value to your cities, except to save space for more lots. I also updated my fire and police stations, to optimize their coverage as best as possible (note that you won't want to reduce their funding). My profits routinely dip to 0 or near 0, especially when one of the hydrogen plants or large water plants wears out. -
Does the calculation take the same amount of real time regardless of the game speed? IE can you start it up, pause it, and come back to it in a few minutes? Or in the alternative can you turn the speed down to llama (or whatever the slowest is, heh) and have it recalculate in the same amount of time it would at cheetah? The reason I ask is that it seems to me, through my non-scientific experimentation, that it takes a certain number of months for the Sims to recalculate paths, regardless of the speed of the game.

I have a HP Pavilion zv6130us w/ 1.5GB RAM. SimCity 4+RH+NAM plays great. Even on my largest city (400-700k pop depending on density) a year goes by very quick. I don't know if it's available any more, but there are newer models in the line. Mine, minus the 1GB additional RAM, was around $1k, which was the magic price point I was aiming for. A big advantage it has over other laptops is that it has dedicated video RAM. It does get rather hot in my lap while playing SC4, though.

In large cities, I have to ignore the advice in the news ticker entirely. It suggests that local hospitals or schools are having funding crises, but it doesn't link to the right buildings. I just either end up waiting until they go on strike, or go through and check every building one by one. (Ugh.

You say that a progress bar shows up sometimes. Do you have it set up to automatically download the files somewhere, and it's doing it in the background, perhaps? What if you open up the download manager in Firefox? Do you see the downloads there?

how do i make a highway turn into roads
dpk replied to The Milkman's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
You can drag avenues right up to the end of a highway and have it connect, and then connect roads to the avenue. That may not be what you want, though. -
Water plants do die off over time. I find I have to replace a large water pump in my main city about every 30 minutes or so of game time (I don't know how many years that is, I play at cheetah). The cost per gallon goes up as the efficiency goes down, too, so you'll get a financial benefit replacing them, too. I've made a habit of checking out the water and power graphs periodically. In the 10 year mode you'll see a rather dramatic drop.

Thank you for the very detailed response Mayormot. I didn't realize the job-finding algorithm had so much to do with proximity to the edge. These cities are laid out in grids, it very well could be causing loops. I think in my case it'd actually be easier to restrict the connections to the center of the city boundaries as suggested -- or, at least, set them up near the water where they'd have to travel a long way through that city to come ack. I'm also going to reduce the number of high density residential zones, to try to reduce commute time further. I may try to move some of the zones from the edges, too. If I continue to have problems I'll create another thread. Apologies to DOXXP29 for the hijacking.

Most of my industry apparently have no workers. They send out freight, but have no cars or pedestrians, or anyone. This is in a city of 700,000 and a region of 1.2M, so there is a lot of inter-city commuting going on. Maybe my main city's workers are heading elsewhere, leaving industry here completely dead?

If you do try the grid format, be sure to leave yourself room for transit. For unmodded games, that'll mean you'd want room for avenues (2x width of roads) and maybe a monorail (1 more width). That's a lot of bulldozing, and you'd end up with a 4x6 instead of 6x6 grids in various busy places.

Question about income avg level.
dpk replied to KingOFEngland's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
My average residential income plummeted to 14-17k with no significant changes to the city or region. I've once seen it spike up to 35 or so, but I can't remember what I did to do that. I think it is some sort of bug. The city has over 600,000 residents, maybe it's overflowing or something. Nearly all of my residents are R$$ or R$$$. -
Who has a problem with commute time?
dpk replied to sixers33's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Heh, the commute time on my main city hovers between 90-100 minutes. I never have problems with demand, though. There are very few choke points in the system: A few fully-packed subways which I'm working on dividing up (parallel routes) and monorails, on which I am told congestion doesn't matter, and the occasional intersection. I am using the NAM, and recently updated to the latest one, with the .exe installer. I didn't get to choose which pathfinder to use, but I've been using the 2x standard stuff -- I don't want to go overboard. I think my problem is that I let the region grow "organically", and then applied some rather harsh policies ("no manufacturing in this city", "no busses", etc). I'm now going through the system location by location applying fixes, installing tunnels, updating routes, etc. I am wondering if it is hopeless, though. I've made major changes to major problem areas and have seen no change to the graph. How much time is tacked on when a commuter has to leave town to work? I assume it isn't 0. That might be the entire problem.
