SimCity Used in Autism Research Project
expectingrain5 posted a topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
This is interesting: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB20001424052748703422904575039351632663996.html?mod=rss_Personal_Journal "As part of their work, the Columbia researchers constructed a "SimCity map of California," referring to the city-building simulation game, says Peter Bearman, the lead investigator. They assembled data pinpointing not just where children with autism were born and diagnosed but also all the parks, day-care centers, doctors' offices, autism-advocacy groups and other gathering places." -
Were all the original buildings in SC4 created in the BAT? If so, do any of the people who created them read these forums and post to the STEX?
-
I had trouble getting on there too- best to email or call them
-
Wow- your BAT skills really improved! How did you get so much better? Was it just practice or did you find some tutorials that helped?
-
I saw that video on youtube too-- thought it was pretty neat though I think he used the full version of Sketch which costs $$$. I'm working on the tutorial in Omnibus right now with the hopes of getting a quarter of the skill as some of the folks here. There are also some good Gmax tutorials on youtube and Google Video if you look around. I'd love to see some of the more gifted designers here do a video of them making a building. I'm sure it would help out the newbies.

How do I change a texture in BAT?
expectingrain5 replied to danspaceman's topic in SC4 BAT & Lot Workshop
I'm working through the Omnibus tutorial right now. It IS a tough program especially if you don't have a CAD background. I'm looking at putting about 40-50 hours to learn it right. Its a process, but just look at some of the output on the STEX from the masters here! Plus there's a TON of support on this board. Don't get discouraged, you'll have an 'A-HA' moment at some point and the software will seem like child's play after that. Good luck and keep at it! -
Looks nice- do you design the roof junk yourself or is there a library to choose from on BAT? ps That is one bright building in real life! Cool though.
-
The actual building *does* look pretty bright in RL, but I think that photo is deceiving. I believe its HDR (and a nice shot!) Can you get just a photograph to see how the actual colors look?
-
Great concept- nice building! The only thing I would suggest is make it "grimier" to blend in with an older neighborhood. I'm trying to learn BAT - how long did this one take you? How long have you been BATTING? Did you teach yourself or use a tutorial? Thanks- keep up the good work!

Road over sunken highway
expectingrain5 replied to expectingrain5's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Thanks for the help- I was trying to drag the road across. I used the puzzle pieces you recommended and it came out perfect. -
When I build a road over my sunken highway the road comes out "bumpy" rather than going straight across the sunken part. How do I get it to be a straight shot? I use the hole digger to build the sunken valley for the highway. Thanks in advance.

Is it possible to terraform a whole region at once or does it have do be done section by section?
-
Great video-- thanks for posting! For me,a BAT *****, It would be cool to see a soup to nuts video, from the picture of a building in real life to the creation in BAT, then the lot creation, then how to import it into the game, then the actual in game shot. I'm sure that would help alot of people out.
-
Wow- thanks for sharing. I'm where you were when you started. I can't sign to the simcity site to get BAT yet because I'm having a problem with them emailing me my authentication. So I've been practicing in Sketchup and mine pretty much look like your starting one. Its nice to know it gets easier over time! Keep up the good work.

I've been using the STEX to d/l "branded" businesses-- McDonalds, Chik-Fil-A,Applebees, Starbucks, etc. IMO that adds to the realism seeing the branded logos.
