I think if you want to go large on your city & region, NAM is a must because it just simply enlarge your traffic capacity. Just read through the forum and you'll go crazy with the addon that you can put into the game. I'd recommend NAM and CAM as a start and you'll be amaze the customization that you can put into this game. I haven't played this game for years and just recently started again only after I found out about these two plugins. If you can't find the addon here, go to the other forum which also an excellent resource. They'll quadruple your city building experience and best of all.. it's free.

Ah..that certainly explains a lot... so how do people get pop of 5 mil or so.. mine stuck @ 3.6 mil

RH: Rush Hour, NAM: Network Addon Modification, CAM: Collosus Addon If you're using CAM, I've read it somewhere that you shouldn't use plopped building, go instead with CAM-patible buildings. But I plopped buildings, let it run for 1-2 years and CAM is still working fine. If all else fail, use cheat like radical ordinance? I use it to boost my city after 2 million, because somehow my health & education always getting overcrowded after that, no matter how large/how many civic facilities I build into the city. Another possible solution: expand your city,zone new residential, co or industrial area. It works as a booster as well

I experienced the same problems, at certain population size the city would just stop growing. My solution was to plop out some high rise commercial or industrial buildings that employes high number of people. The population jumped after that and would grow tremendously. After you see positive growth you can buldoze the plopped buildings and still maintain the effect. But this is assuming you have positive demand for R, CO or I, otherwise I don't think it'll work. Btw, I'm using RH, CAM and NAM for this method.
